  1. After being truely appalled by the film versions of From Hell, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen and V for Vendetta, I saw this one before reading the graphic novel. I think I followed most of what was happening, but Alan Moore has said in the past that his comics and graphic novels don't translate well to the screen because not all of it is mean't to be taken literally, but when its on screen its much harder not to do this. **SOILER SPOLIER** The bit with Rorschach at the end was a bit odd, but I guess he felt he had to tell the world what was happening. Its really similar to the end of Dark Knight, where the DR M has to take the fall and be framed as the villain, for the wider good. Considering I really hated 300 (well half of me really hated it, the other half found it an empty dry-w@nk of a film) I was surprised by how much I liked Watchmen. There were some truly inspired moments, the bit in the prison riot where Rorschach follows mini-me into the toilets and the swinging toilet door showed you just enough to know something really bad was going down, that was much more shocking than the full-on in-your-face-violence. The opening credits were great too. It suffers from the same problems that Dark Knight has, its w-a-y t-o-o l-o-n-g and very uneven, but this may be remembered as the more interesting of the two films. Damn straight, I could barely string a sentence togther afterwards. 700,000 out of a million
  2. I hope they rape the $hit out of him in prison, three times a day, everyday, for the rest of his sorry life. And then kill all his man-babies. I'm so full of :smt049 today
  3. I loved the first Stone Roses album when it came out but the thought of seeing them reform for the $$$ does nothing for me. I'm much more excited about the prospect of seeing Spiritualized playing the whole of 'ladies and gentlemen...' as a one-off, with choir, string section and special guests. Its at Royal Festival Hall on 12th October, tickets are £27 and go on sale tomorrow (thurs 19th). Now thats 90s nostelgia! http://www.atpfestival.com/Events/SpiritualizedDLBLondon/News/0903160925.php
  4. I'm starting to do that too, i was planning on it anyway. I've got a friendly tonight in Russia (costing me four grand in flights!) so now i'm tempted to put a couple of my 'stars' in so its not too embarrassing (flying the flag and all that).
  5. (stop it!) oo-oo-o-o-o-ohh oo-oo-o-o-o-ohh
  6. I'll give you another game but as you're two leagues above me its going to be a bit one-sided, even if you field weakest possible side, especially as I'm going to take your advice and start swapping players around, trying them in new positions and getting my kids out. In what was undoutedly my most exciting and nail-biting game of hattrick yet, I won the first of my back-to-back six pointers against my promotion rivals, 3-5 (the away leg). We kept taking the lead and they kept equalising until the last ten minutes of the game when we opened our legs and showed our class. This gives me a five point cushion, if I win the next game against them on Sunday then the gap between me and third place will be 8 points and I'll probably be able to seal promotion with three more wins, all of which can come against bot-teams. My side aren't remotely ready for promotion and have a lot of improving to do, but hey, you can only beat whats infront of you.:smt021
  7. Dear Wendy A touching and unusual love story between **** (as in , the short name for Richard ), a young outsider in a tiny American town, and his beloved gun, Wendy. He forms a gang out of all the town's geeks, nerds and losers, who immerse themselves in the science of ballistics, entry/exit wounds and outrageous foppish behaviour to wind up the 'real men' that work in the town's mine. They all marry their 'partners' (guns) and vow not to 'make love' to (shoot) anyone but when Wendy falls in love with a new gang member, everything leads them toward the inevitable stand off with the cops, the hail of bullets and a blood splattered blaze of glory. It was written by Lars Von Trier and directed by Thomas Vinterberg, who made the first (and by far the best) dogma film Festen. Jamie Bell is excellent in the lead role, and Bill Pullman reminded me how great he was in Lost Highway with another wonderfully creepy role as the town's sheriff. Its all shockingly allegorical - guns are like bad, mkay? Or is it? Either way its recommended for anyone bored with by-the-numbers Hollywood trash. 8/10 Dark Knight I watched this again over the weekend and it confirmed everything I thought about it first time round; its too long and uneven, and the bit at the end with the two ferries just feels rushed and painfully worthy compared to the rest of it. But saying that its pretty impressive and is clearly influenced by The Wire. Who needs an elaborately gothic Gotham City when 'TVs greatest ever show' has illustrated that most American cities are in a slow but steady terminal decline. The gritty 'real life' stuff clashes with the silly super-hero stuff but it all just about hangs together, thanks largely to Heath Ledger, and Michael Caine who gives the film some much needed warmth. Better than Batman Begins but still plenty of room for improvement. It feels heavily cut (no doubt it was to get the 12 cert) and I imagine a director's cut/15-cert version will be a much more satisfying experience. 657.3/1000 Off to see Watchmen tonight!
  8. I bought Crooked Rain Crooked Rain by Pavement in the Rough Trade shop on the day of its release. Still a cherished memory and my fave album ever
  9. That my friend was a British/Danish film called Red Road which came out in 2005. The guy, accidentally killed the women's husband and child in a car crash. He goes to prison and then is releases a few years later for good behaviour. She's so desperate to get him sent away that she uses herself as bate, certain that the guy is such as animal that he'll rape her. As you describe, he turns out to be a sensetive lover who makes sure she enjoys herself before he does. This forces her to make it look like a rape. IMO, its one of the best British films to have come out for quite a few years, its also one of the films I'm writing about for my revenge thesis. Its well worth a squirt .
  10. last minute goal = infinate lol although i think they've squeaked out of the bottom three on gd
  11. How so? We would have killed them all? IMO immigration is an inevitable outcome of an empire. We steal their land, impose our own culture, squander their resourses, make them fight in our wars, and then we have the nerve to complain when they 'come over here'. lol
  12. Soup, soup, a tasty soup, soup, a spicy carrot and coriander Chilli chowder Crouton, crouton, crunchy friends in a liquid broth I am gespatchio oh! I am a summer soup um! Miso miso fighting in the dojo Miso miso oriental prince in the land of soup!
  13. I've tried selling my young 'uns but no one will touch them with a barge-pole, but to be fare, they are rubbish. Do you have any pointers in regards to training them up?
  14. They are indeed
  15. I've got to say that I'm really sickened and depressed by most of posts on this thread. When people start quoting an Australian prime minister (Australia's human rights record is utterly appalling) or a racist comedian (the only thing people should be saying more often is that Sinfield was rubbish) on ethical or racial issues, you just know we're phucked as a nation. The next generation won't just be sorting out our financial mess, but also having to deal with our moral bankruptcy. I for one believe in the right to protest and free speech for all. I do not believe in this mentality of 'all our boys fighting abroad are heroes and its wrong to criticise them whilst the they're serving', that's the kind of blinkered mentality allowed the holocaust to happen. I appreciate troops do a $hitty job with 2nd rate equipment, and yes, having their noses rubbed in it on their return home is tough on them, but they freely chose to join the army in the first place and aren't they supposed to be tough lads? And its not like they've just returned home from destroying the death star or freeing the ewoks, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have been deeply unpopular from the start, and have IMO made the world, and in particular this country, a much more dangerous place. And for anyone "special" enough to think that the current situation (previously known as the war on terror) is about race, that this is somehow a war of civilisations, a conflict between the West and the East, then explain to me how the most fanatical, hard-line and oppressive Isamic nation on Eath is also the West's closest allie, money-lender and oil supplier, Saudi Arabia, the nation that gave us Osama Bin Laden and 7 of the 9/11 high-jackers. As other posters have pointed out, this is only news because it can appease the knee-jerk racists out there. If they had been Pensioners Against the War would some of the posters on here fantasise about letting off a few rounds, sending a few tea-cosy-heads to meet their maker. Oh how hilarious it was when we started chanting, 'phuq off back to the 1940s' and 'Oi Granny, phuq off and make me a Victoria sponge' And a special message to StuRomseySaint, I'm really worried about you dude, please go and see your GP as a matter of urgency, cos if Jade Goody has proved anything at all, it's that racists die of cancer
  16. Last night was a crazy one for sports, with all the key fixtures ending in draws. England's cricketers so nearly pulled a win out the bag in the most dramatic of styles, Saints could have come away with three points but had to make do with one, and the sinistry of mound fc and the stain's second string had it out in a bruising six-goal thriller which finally ended with honours even. Considering my boys were seemingly dead and buried at half time, the result is a welcome morale booster just before two MASSIVE games which will determine who gets promoted in our league. I've got back-to-back games against my main promotion rivals who hilariously drew 0-0 on Sunday, giving me a two point (and big goal difference) lead on them. I don't want to count my metaphorical chickens but I reckon if I win one of them I should squeak through, a win and a draw would make me favourites to hold on the second spot, whilst two defeats would leave me trailing in their wake. Two wins and I'll be spending the rest of the season in a post-Ashes Freddie Flintoff state. These are exciting times for the mound :smt041
  17. 90-6 all the big hitters are out, apart from gayle, whose hopefully crook. its going to be a tense end to a frustrating series, but potentially we could really phuq them over just four more wickets needed
  18. if you stretch your arms out by your side (at 45 degrees to your body), the length from the tips of your fingers on one hand to the other is exactly the same as your height. the length of your forearm is exactly the same length as your foot. the length of my coq is exactly the same as a baby's arm, holding an orange.
  19. his first series for channel four was a work of genius, things got a bit tired after that but he's still better than 99% of the cuhnts on ITV. I went out for a drive with my Nan the other day, she was fine whilst we went along straight road but as soon as we approached a corner she started screaming 'WERE GOING TOO FAST, WE'RE GOING TO DIE'. When we got back on straight road, she was fine again but as soon as we approached another bend, 'WERE GOING TOO FAST, WE'RE GOING TO DIE'. Anyway, after some time I said, 'Look Nan, stop the car and let me drive'.
  20. The 3rd test (as in the resheduled 2nd test) was good cricket, apart from the result. But yeah, Gayle has pretty much guaranteed the Windies their first series win in ages but what a soul-crushing dull way of achieving it.
  21. Can I point out ther irony of criticising 'plastic' michael jackson fans a) put him in direct sunlight and his face would warp. b) he's re-embracing his blackness, now that the country has a black president. if that isn't the height of being plastic, what is?
  22. I can't believe i missed this thread. Bono is a massive **** for so many reasons, primarily for his swanning around the world, telling elected leaders how they should spend their tax payers money, whilst his own taxes are taken care off with a string of off-shore accounts, ensuring that he pays phuq all. ****!
  23. cheers for posting this, i dont have a tv and youtube takes the footage down too quickly. the third goal was especially pleasing. 89 mins gone, 2-0 up and saints were still working their socks off to win possession and create chances. awesome stuff!
  24. Not much, i can tell you. The home leg could be equally uncomfortable. Your team's alright.
  25. Agreed. Considering that the love of cricket in ****stan goes beyond fanatical, it’s a sure sign that the country is ripping itself apart. I can't see anyone wanting to play ****stan home or away for years to come. I'm sure that India are worried that they'll get tarred with the same brush, so to speak.
