At a guess I'd say it's all about teams with 2 away games not playing away on Thursday and again on Saturday. Saints are away twice as are Arsenal,Liverpool and Stoke and now all are away on the Sunday and not 2 on Sunday and 2 on Saturday. so for the players and supporters there's a 2 full day break between the games to allow for deplacements.

They had some pretty iffy results in November January and February though, coped pretty well in December, then again they only had 5 league games. They entered the EL after being eliminated from the CL pretty dismally.
