We might know that there is no alternative to the backstop (unless the EU truly caves); but the idea that Johnson will admit that the backstop is essential, having trashed it in the most scathing terms and won a leadership contest by promising to kill it is for the birds. Pragmatism may dictate one thing; but politically he’s painted himself into a corner. As I’ve said before, the populist tail is wagging the dog.
