I've watched the video replay of that incident several times, and it clearly seems that the Leeds player played the ball onto Martin's hand, and it was not a deliberate offence. I'm just glad that the eventually penalty goal didn't affect the result.

"The hardest job is done for the Southampton manager"
david in sweden replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
no-one ever achieved anything by just hoping. Nigel Adkins' mindset is the secret of his (our) success. There are lots of negatives in the world, but success comes from looking for the positives in every situation. -
I can't remember how far back the thread was exactly, but I do remember being criticised for my suggestions, but with Seaborne now quite likely going out on loan..... and " the three" being put on the list last week, .......the only thing left from my former predictions is; the TWO new CBs, ......ANOTHER keeper.... and ANOTHER striker /cum/ attacking midfielder, 'cos I still expect Chaplow (or Puncheon) to be loaned out / sold.

I didn't say that ? ..

Steve De Ridder ....is no Steve de Ridder on recent showings !
-
Everyone trying to predict our starting line-up, whilst I think it will likely be the same as started on Saturday - despite the result. More interesting though is Man.City's injury list. Joe Hart has a back injury - not from picking the ball out of the back of the net, I'm sure. Micah Richards is out for a month with an ankle injury..and Mario Balotelli..(reportedly) has conjuctivitis and won't be available for the Engalnd v. Italy friendly..... .however, even if the possible absence of these three raises hopes ..unfortunately, they still have a pretty formidable squad to choose form.

I am sure that we will sign " someone ( or hopefully several someone's) in the next week or so, but we are now less than a week away from what is certainly the toughest challenge of the season ( Prem. champs AWAY) I am fairly certain that no-one who MAY be signed during this week is even likely to get on the bench - let alone in the start 11. The basic eleven who started against Udinese are most likely the chosen starters for Sunday. Thankfully, we didn't lose three points as a result of Saturdays game - what may happen on Sunday is open to conjecture.

after yesterdays' performance, maybe consider 11 men linking arms in a line on the goal line..?

it depends on how far back you want to go. despite their disappointing sojourns as either; " caretaker / short-term manager/ or, hold the fort, Steve " there are quite a few candidates over recent decades. Wigley, of course got caned horribly when forced to take the reins for a month or so (back then), but his performances with youth players were excellent. likewise, Stuart Gray, Micky Adams and Dennis Rofe all did well at the job on various occasions. However, if you base it on eventual first-teamers who made it BIG, then we only have one candidate; Dave Merrington. Those of you who criticise his very individual style of commentaries on Solent, should have paid more attention to the 10 years or so (from 1984- ) that he managed the youth sides that started with Matt le Tissier, the Wallace brothers, Alan Shearer (where have I heard that name before ?)...Neil Maddison, George Lawrence, Craig Maskell, Frannie Benali, Jeff Kenna, David Puckett, Ian Juryeff, Martin Foyle who all made League careers, and many, many more, who eventually clocked up hundreds of games between them. He may not be everyone's favourite voice on the radio, but on the training pitch with the youngsters .....he got great results season after season.....

Jason Puncheon "does not cut the mustard" for me
david in sweden replied to Miltonroader07's topic in The Saints
Of course his previous record doesn't help but everyone needs a second chance and if he can continue this present form then he'll be worth a place- if not. ...we have other options. -
will you guys please take this conversation onto another thread, or better still keep it PRIVATE. in case you hadn't notice,in the beginning it was an interesting thread about QUALITY players...

Blackpool report Saints over Phillips approach
david in sweden replied to SuperMikey's topic in The Saints
Is he going to report Everton, Wigan and Swansea too?.......or is it just his way of trying to up the price 'cos it's us.? -
this little tete-a-tete between you guys (about selling / not selling the club) ... is beginning to take over the thread --which is about the QUALITY of players we have / should have / will / won't ...be able to sign. Would you care to either start a new thread on the subject, a poll... .or preferably come to the conclusion that this is one issue on which you can't agree. just what are your views on quality players?... as it's obvious that (whoever owns the club), we will need such players to maintain our new status.

....and has only managed 8 games in 5 years(!), and a lot of loans to lower league sides ...Mmmm, can't say I'm impressed .
-
they got scre*ed, of course .......and they're still in NPC !
-
one of the benefits of signing players who are on a "free " or OOC. ...with no fees involved those greedy bar stewards can't claim lots of backhanders.
-
just read an interesting (and fairly positive) summary of the current Saints situation on " the Bleacher Report " ....included in a very long paragraph about player transfers, it suggested that Dan's move was for a fee of 500K....not bad for a player who came on free transfer 3 years ago .......and a v.good deal for Forest I'd say.

We are the famous Southampton and we're in the Movie
david in sweden replied to Noodles34's topic in The Saints
if you go back far enough, you might (want to forget) the infamous movie...Yesterdays Hero (1979) about a recovering alcoholic football star (no not George Best - well... almost ). The film starred Ian McShane, Suzanne Somers (wow!)... and the former 60's pop star Terry Nelhams (sorry - Adam Faith to you). A very poor script based on a book by Jackie Collins but the "team " to which he was attached was loosely based on the Saints, although only a few shots were of (then) Saints 'players but the football scenes were of the Saints v. Notts Forest League Cup Final from the prev.season. All of the film's " footballers " were very poor actors - most of whom looked incredibly unfit and couldn't kick a sleeping dog....but nevertheless the cinemas in town were full of Saints' fans who went to see it. -
my choice would be start with Rickie and sub. him with Jay Rod in the second half...unless RL has scored by then.
-
I've actually met him several times. Our daughter has a proud photo of herself with him - when she was much younger. He's friendly, cheerful but not much of a conversationalist (outside of football)...but he is quite knowledgeable about the game. Mind you with 125+ caps for Sweden - you'd expect that.

Why do we concede so many long range goals?
david in sweden replied to Dibden Purlieu Saint's topic in The Saints
well, we have scored a few ourselves over the years. Few of us have played " serious football " at any good level, but with players charging around at 30 mph ...there is little anyone can do to stop an unmarked player from taking a pot-shot from 25 yards. The unfortunate goalie may have 15-20 players in front of him and may not even see the kicker -let alone the ball. A stunt on Swedish TV some years ago timed the speed of shots by some of their international players. Henke Larsson (ex Celtic striker) was clocked at almost 100 mph.....I'd defy anyone to stop one of those. It's all down to luck..if the keeper gets a sight of it, he makes a wonder save and everyone breathes a sigh of relief, until the next one. -
-
at this point in time ...perhaps only Nigel Adkins, unless..........
-
I would think AFTER the Man. City game .....depending on the result.
-
of course he's not alone with that problem, but if he 's expecting to play on the wing... he'll need to smarten up a bit.
