I think there are several possible answers to the OP. Most of the players in the top half of that list......have been one-club men, and even youth players in those same clubs that have " won things ".(League titles, Cups etc.) Also those clubs had big incomes that equal big salaries, and so they had little or no desire to move from a club that was successful and paying them well. With as much as 60% of the Prem. players being non-British, (and of those), the better ones stay longer at successful clubs. Loyalty, in the old meaning hardly exists now. Careers are short, managers leave /are sacked more often and incoming replacements want to get in their own favourites. Many foreign imports have already had a career start elsewhere, so don't have the same " ties " to an English club, and if they like the club ....they will stay longer. NOTED: I saw one glaring omission to your list ...that of Claus Lundekvam who played over 400 games for Saints (almost all in the Prem.) and DAJFU on many occasions.

Rivals/Other Prem clubs transfer thread

well....isn't it a bit further North ? ....can't think of any other reason to move....unless it's for money...... -
Erwin and Jan leave for Everton (official)
david in sweden replied to Bad Wolf's topic in The Saints
Did anyone expect them to stay on ?....or -
latest name : WALTER ZENGA .........Who? just watched the antiquated You Tube clip on him....WOW ! Never mind the manager's job....he'd do OK as an extra keeper, too.....
-
you forgot seeing Glenn Hoddle banging on the door of the Saints Shop outside SMS......
-
If Les doesn't "defect " to Spurs...... Ralph learns about the offside rule in football.....and Kat doesn't decide to buy Liverpool instead, I'd say we'll make more progress.
-
as for " people " who can DAJFU...... I'd like Les Reed to sign...... a really top grade Manager.....and oversee the transfer of " even better " players than those we have lost / may lose . For my money, that'd be worth a bonus to Les.
-
.......good to see that I'm not the only person who's angry at the way we always get shafted by Spurs. One report says that Saints (read Les Reed) are now demanding £12 million from the North London Yobbos (one good comment we inherited from Rupert Lowe), on account of the fact we paid that much for him in the beginning ......and will have to pay back Celtic a sell-on % of the fee.

Who has left Saints and gone on to better things?
david in sweden replied to Ade's topic in The Saints
a bit loathed to mention this one, BUT how about Andy Townsend.? Signed by Lawrie McMenemy 1985, and afterwards played 80+ games until falling out with LM's successor Chris Nicholl. Went to Norwich in 1988...after which he moved onto big money move to Chelsea (sell-on cluses weren't thought of in those days)......and then Aston Villa , where he won 2 League Cups, and by the time he finished his playing days at Middlesboro and WBA he'd clocked up over 500 league games ...... OH ..and those 70-odd international games for the Republic of Ireland. I dread having him to listen to him as the " Expert commentator " on England's international games, where he talks at length about his own career - with the exception of his time with Saints - and always insists on giving MoM award to Jack Wilshere - even if (said player) was only on for a 10 minute sub.appearance. -
Firstly, I don't buy the RK argument that his move wasn't about money.......of course it was. RK also seems to be claiming that Saints don't have ambition (as he sees it). In addition to his massive salary increase....he has been given a huge transfer budget obviously tempted him to consider the possibilities, whereas Saints, with rare exception, though spending a lot of transfer themselves, have never made the type of buys that could break the bank, and keep a tight hand on the purse strings. Even when many claimed that the Shane Long deal was over the top (at the time) ....has turned out to look like " a steal " in today's market. Clubs who don't have big money say that money doesn't always buy success....whereas some who do, have proven that to be correct in recent seasons. The main difference comes down to different people's perception of the words... " success... and ambition ". Rich, (or should we say) very rich investors often want " a quick fix " and the likes of Abrahamovic want success now, and have sacked some good managers along the way, when they don't deliver by the end of a season. If RK spends his (suggested) £100 million transfer budget, and does no better than his predecessor then he may be sacked by this time next year, but can cry all the way to the bank. If he never manages another side (after Everton) he'd still become a rich TV pundit. Saints' "softly, softly" approach, shows the caution of a club who rose Phoenix-like from the bottom of L1 just 7 years ago, and are wary of making the same mistakes. Both Ralph and Les, are marking time, saying ...success will come, but we haven't put a date on it. We " slow-march " onward. One season at a time. RK may think that it would have been difficult to finish 5th...or better next season, whereas even he could do better for Everton than their 11th place. Having made his choice, we will see how things turn out. He has made a " win-win " decision in his personal economy. If Saints continue to finish above Everton in the coming seasons, we may have to re-define " success ", but RK will still be able to grin as he looks at his bank statements. If " ambition " is merely getting richer.... he's already fulfilled that part.

of course.....since Alan Pardew's time, every new manager has done better than his predecessor ......
-
you forgot the Return of ....the Jedi (sorry 'arry Redknapp) . After all SMS was his spiritual home .....well for a short time anyway.
-
I would hope that Alan Pardew would be there, too.. after all.... didn't he sign Jose in the first place ?.......
-
winning CL ......with the manager after next...
-
well...yes...he could have done, but Toby was (argueably) one of our best players in that season....and what Poch did with his Spurs players is not an arguement.
-
If it wasn't just about money ......Les Reed was asking RK for something much more important. Dedication and Loyalty.

Why don't we simply appoint The Black Box as manager?
david in sweden replied to Singapore Saint's topic in The Saints
HaHa ....(nice one) .....a Saints Odyssey....... -
TRUE. Toby could have stayed - if he'd wanted to. Saints certainly didn't want him to leave. When his loan went out he was open to the highest bidder.
-
Don't need the cash - TRUE, but with one year left on his contract it's a good deal. By January Spurs would offer £3million, and this time next year, he'd be a free agent and we 'd get £ 0 .

I voted for Pellegrini from the start, but with new (little known) names popping up all the time, I really hope Les & Co. make the right decision. ......just as long as it's someone who can communicate in tolerable English and use the correct prepositions......
