I think any manager is always under subtle but great pressure to pick the "brand" names. In no particular order the clubs who want the publicity, the FA and even the media who have favorite players. Why? well IMHO money is probably the major issue as the names can get more money from sponsors than less well known players and the media can sell more TV time / papers as more people will watch / read about names they know more than up and coming lads.
