Former Home Secretary Jacqui Smith has been appointed as a junior Minister in the HoL, she of the dodgy expenses claim for porn movies watched by her husband.
Yes, but LD's point about regional parties/issues is something that PR would dilute. The thing about the US Electoral College is to prevent the more densely populated States dominating the more 'empty' ones in the Midwest. I'm not sure these 2 situations actually bear comparison.
The LDs and Greens would show a better votes/seats ratio if they concentrated more on seats they might win rather than putting up candidates across the board.
Alternatively, under PR, where would protest and local interest independents go ? How would the successful pro-Gaza MPs have faired ? How do you run by-elections ?
I suspect we will get an interim leader who will operate whilst the party fights internally for it's new identity, then in 3 years time the person to take them into the next GE, and probably lose, will emerge.
Would you leave a proportion of HoC seats vacant to account for the wishes of those who don't vote, for whatever reason ? After all, their views are equally as valid as those that vote.
Are you not concerned that people voted for Count Binface, thinking it was a good idea. Or the thousands that voted for pro-Gaza independents ? At least we only have 4 MPs of that ilk, France could easily end up with worse actually running the country.
Pro : Starmer has won, the Tories have imploded
Con : the vote share is hardly an endorsement
Pro : Starmer has enough MPs to be able to ignore the headbangers on the left
Con : He is stimied by the shitshow he has inherited from Sunak and Truss
Pro : We should have a stable and consistent Government for the full term
Con : With a majority of 170 how can the Government be held to account by the opposition
