It would be prudent if he's unsure on his future - an FA Cup looks good on the CV. With the worst will in the world and a supremely negative attitude it's hard to see us not making 40 points comfortably which means there's little to no pressure in the league. Also as the season goes on there are very few clubs for which this would be top priority - all the clubs below us are still in the relegation dogfight and most above us are pushing for Europe/Title and this gives us an edge if we take the cup seriously

To be fair the 25 man squad is over-21 players, anyone younger doesn't need to be registered so it's not like he's going to prevent any academy players from getting a game. People have been moaning about the lack of squad depth, so it's better to have him just in case Lambert, Rodriguez and Gallagher all get crocked at once!

He'll still have year left on his contract and presumably will feel that he has a fairly strong negotiating position for a new one. If he wants it and if he gets assurances on transfer funds, club ambition etc. to make sure his interests still align with ours; if they do i'd expect him to stay - he's building his reputation, something not possible at every club. So unless he gets poached by a properly big club then I doubt it.
