Britain's Next Top Prime Minister - Labour Leadership Election 2020.
sadoldgit replied to CB Fry's topic in The Lounge
As we have seen recently, it doesn’t always work well for a party in power when a large number of MPs are not aligned with their own parties political stance. -
I expect his father will be disappointed. Prince Charles too.

Ok that might be another way of putting it, but old school socialists didn’t see Blair and New Labour as a good thing apart from getting Labour elected of course. The is still a great deal of rancour between Blairites and the left wing of the party. The fact that Murdoch supported him tells you all you need to know about politics in the mid 90s. Every other Labour leader has been pilloried by the majority of the press in this country. If you don’t see that you have not been paying attention. -

I didn’t say that did I? Seems like you are reverting to the old hypo. It’s a shame, you were doing so well. -

And we are supposed to believe that misinformation doesn’t get spread by those trying to slur someone? Once again Duckie manages to prove something he is attempting to disprove. -

Blair was a watered down Tory. Even Duckie might have voted for him. -

And yet research after the election showed a huge media bias towards the Tories with many untrue and negative stories run against Labour. It is common knowledge that the press in this country is strongly right wing. What is “pony” is pretending it isn’t. -

If it were only Corbyn then you would have a point. But it is every single Labour leader. I was just looking at the famous picture The Sun ran of Ed Milligan’s eating a bacon sandwich. They turned a natural everyday occurrence into an image which was supposed to say don’t vote for the bloke as PM, look how silly he looks eating a sandwich. The all powerful press barons do not want a Labour government so they work tirelessly to make sure they are constantly seen in the worst light. Corbyn is not an anti Semite but the media have done their job because people now clearly believe it. Can you just imagine the grief Johnson would have got if he was Labour? They would have torn him apart daily. -

Not for the first time you sound like you work for the rabid right wing tabloids. Where is the evidence that Corbyn is an anti Semite? Where is the evidence that he supports terrorist organisations. You see happy to ignore Johnson’s Islamophobic remarks and remarks about bum boys. Hypocritical double standards but that the Tory Party for you. If you have been watching the Christine Keeler programme you will see that nothing has changed amongst your lot. -

We all know where you stand with morals and “chicks” Duckie. Johnson and Trump get brownie points for being serial ****gers/adulterers in your book I’m guessing. -

That’s great, but he didn’t feel it worth the effort to show his face or make a statement to the people who have only just elected him. Fair enough. I expect he was far too busy with his latest partner. -

Sorry, misread it at first. Do I think he was? I don’t know, but he certainly gave the impression that he had a “Do Not Disturb” sign on his door. Given the seriousness of the situation, wouldn’t you expect our PM to respond immediately? He couldn’t even be bothered to turn up at his place of work yesterday and make a statement about it. Meanwhile we have Raab blathering away about the Iranian missile strikes and how bad that is. Erm, why do you think it happened Mr Raab? -

Not to the extent that the Labour leader gets belittled daily. Let’s not pretend it doesn’t happen. It starts even before they are elected and caries on daily right up to election day. Character wise Johnson is a far worse human being than Corbyn but you wouldn’t know it if all you did was to read the majority of our daily newspapers. What difference does it make how much money Keir Starmer has or what his profession was but already they are trying to paint him as some kind of pretend socialist. They treat Labour leaders in exactly the same way as they treat England football managers. If it was happening to your party we wouldn’t hear the end of it. There are a number of indisputiful facts about living in the UK. One is that the leader of the Labour Party gets vilified daily in the right wing press. -

You have completely missed the point Wes. The largely right wing press constantly find ways of discrediting Labour leaders. Do you think that serves democracy well when they don’t treat Tory leaders in the same way? Of course it doesn’t but why should you care because it serves your purpose well. You do the same thing so I can only imagine you are hoping for a sub editors job on The Sun, Mail or Express. Here’s a thought, perhaps all politicians should be treated the same by the media. Unless of course you are afraid of a level playing field? -

Plenty of time for that I’m sure. Such a shame that Johnson is not the Labour leader. Just think what dirt the press could through his way. -

The Sun has taken to preceding Keir Starmer with “millionaire barrister.” Not sure what that has got to do with anything. Perhaps they should also precede Boris Johnson with “serial adulterer and congenital liar” just to balance things up? -

I am not sore that UC would not pay our mortgage. I am sore that my wife, who had worked all her life, got no financial support after all of the years of paying NI contributions, and was given no support in a system that is supposed to be there for you if you are looking for work. Perhaps if you had to use the system yourself you might understand. Better still, watch the film I, Daniel Blake. It is spot on. Instead of taking cheap shots at me, perhaps you should address the problem we have with poverty in general in the country? 5th largest economy but you wouldn’t know it. You don’t believe the official figures about child poverty? You might not have seen people sleeping rough where you live but you must have seen the foodbanks in your supermarket? Perhaps you think that it is all a conspiracy theory? -
I remember a lot of anger over the non signing of Promes. It would be a lot easier just to say they are working hard to bring a player or two in rather than actually put a name out there. As soon as a player is named, the expectations become so much higher. We also hear a few years down the line of players we were genuinely interested in signing and the reasons that they didn’t come. It is better for your nerves if you believe a player is sold when he signs for another club and a player is signing when he actually signs on. Everything else is just bull**** until the ink is dry on the contract. We all read the transfer rumours, how many of them actually happen?

Given that the reason we have these issues at the moment is down to the very people who are now saying they are going to do something about it, it does leave me feeling somewhat sceptical. Especially as the current PM is a congenital liar and is completely untrustworthy. Let’s see what happens shall we. I am not holding my breath as we have already had a number of u turns already. -

When the food banks disappear, when people are no longer sleeping on the streets, when child poverty is irradicated, when the Universal Credit system is fit for purpose, perhaps then they can talk about “One Nation” with a level of sincerity.
