Ron Davies without doubt. Unbelieveable value for money. Probably the best ever "old fashioned" centre forward. Most surprising for me would be Chris Marsden. What a great buy he was.

I can't remember where it is, but there is an excellent web page which goes through and debunks all the conspiracy theories one by one. This was Man's greatest achievement - shame that some people want to crap all over it.

Together as one - Nigel Adkins post match interview
sadoldgit replied to TopGun's topic in The Saints
Will the ex programme sellers get an invite? Fair play to Adkins and although I am not a Cortese luvvie fair pla yto him for sticking with Nige. -
The worst this seasons by a country mile - nothing to do with Saints. The best - anything with red and white stripes and black shorts.
-
I wonder who spread all the rumours about Pardew to try and make it look like it was more than just not seeing eye to eye? Funny they have all vanished now! Good luck to the bloke (apart from tomorrow). He did an excellent job for us and certainly laid the foundations for what followed. As much as I like Adkins, Pardew's signings were better and you wonder what he would have done with £30 odd million for us this season.
-
And the fact that Adkins is still the manager. Not great to be in a relegation fight in November but I would stick with him.
-
Sadly this was not a one off. KD played a suicide ball out early on in the season and we have made too many unforced mistakes at the back.
-
You do not pass the ball to a defender with his back to the ball and a player on his back. You are asking for trouble and that is wht happened. Agreed 90% goalkeepers fault.
-
I don't get why all the flak is headed Adkins way. Cortese and Reid clearly have a huge part to play in this season's problems but it seems okay to single out one bloke.
-
It could be argued that he is not geting results this season. Which previous Chairman are you talking about? The one that kept us in the Premiership with 15k crowds and little money to spend?
-
Which is still peanuts. At that point the most we ever spent on a player was £4m and that was years ago. You say no club could match. Really? We can't match what Chelsea and man City spend - it is all relative.
-
It is not a question of us being 4th and everything would be great. As FF says, the chances of a "smaller" club ever coming runners up as we did under Big Mac are non existant now. That was the difference. And anyone who says the football is beter now obviously never saw George Best, Rodney Marsh et all strut their stuff. Real men playing in terrible conditions and having the crap kicked out of them without all of the theatrics. It is a pantomime now in comparison.

When we went down from the Prem last tme I was gutted and thought that was the only place to be. I have completely changed my mid now. The football in the Championship is good quality and I would have no problem staying there anymore. I don't want my football club to be a "brand." The Prem sold its soul years ago to Murdoch and like everything he touches he devalues it in terms of soul. It is all about the money, money, money. When we spent £12 on Ramirez that just didnt feel right. We don't spend shedloads on players. We find gems like Lambert and Pahars or develop our own. The Premiership sucks.

Owes a lot to the Who, Beatles, Small Faces, Kinks and later in his career he copied Stevie Windwood's vocal style. Check out the originals if you like that type of music. You have to laugh at the Modfather monkier - her certainly was no innovator.

Harry Redknapp to be named manager within 3 weeks
sadoldgit replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
Redkanpp was quoted as wondering what he was doing here, constantly talked about us in the third party and wasted £6m quid. He refused to work with Clive Woodward who knows a thing or two about winning. I hope he never darkens our door again. -
They said it was for yanking his pony tail on the radio and that is what I saw on TV. Didnt notice the hand ball.
-
Perhaps we should be aiming our barbs at Les Reid and not Adkins?
-
I was talking about Delladys attitude toqards Pardew. Why don't we have a poll about Cortese? He seesm to be Adkins biggest problem. People on her have jumped all over previous CEOs for doing far less than this guy. And I don't by the he saved the club so he can do what he wants shtick. We would still be Southampton FC without him. Perhaps playing in a lower league but still in red and white stripes and with a lot more integrity.
-
Not by you though, you were glad to see him go. Gone downhill since hasn't he
-
Perhaps we should try all three at once?
-
Why have a go at the manager. Rooney is suppposed to be World Class - how many quality performances has he put in in an England shirt. The others are meant to be top players too but they seem to lose something when they pull on the England shirt. Been happening for years under lots of different managers.

Le Tissier: "Cortese is not a nice human being"
sadoldgit replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
Didn't he rent a house from Benali then refuse to pay the rent because of something not being right with the property? Ended up going to court I think. -
Le Tissier: "Cortese is not a nice human being"
sadoldgit replied to Saint-Armstrong's topic in The Saints
If it was Lowe instead of Cortese this would be a very different thread. Ever thought that perhaps there is something in what Matt is saying or is the new Chairman beyond reproach? -
I am more embarrassed by the empty spaces in our defence.
-
I thought, and still think, that Cortese made a massive mistake by firing Pardew. Having said that he redeemed himself by hiring Adkins who, like the team and the club, are on a massive learning curve. Would I rather have Pardew in charge now? Yes. But given time I am sure Adkins can become a decent Premiership manager and I just hope he gets that time. He makes mistakes but then so do all of the Premiership managers most of the time - even Fergie. The defence should have been sorted in the summer and by all accounts they were targetting various defenders. We didn't get them but look at the mighty Liverpool and their striker situation - and Spurs if Defoe gets crocked. The transfer window is a nonsense but we have to live with it and perhaps NC will learn that business needs to be done quickly and to cut out the macho "who blinks first" negotiating stance. Yes, maybe the Premiership came a season too early for us but we are there now and Nigel will need to find a way of sorting out the appalling situation where we need to score 4 every game to win - thats what he is paid for and that is what he will be judged on ultimately this season. Good luck to the bloke, he has earned it.
