Can we please dump this bus b*ll*cks. I have a lot of respect for what Adkins has achieved but some of his statements make me cringe and the bus thing was the worst of the lot.

Just been watching the "highlights" again and it is strange how U2 came across. Larry Mullen seemed very disinterested in the after concert interview and that cam through in their performance. One thing that really grates. It is an awsome festival yet the bland one dimensional people they get to do the links from Radio 1 turn it into amateur hour.

Like Diana who, in Royals circles was attractive but in reality was average, the media hype up anyone in public life who has one iota of sex appeal as being "special." There are better looking women in my office but because Pippa has that "Royal" thing going on all of a sudden she is special. Strange that no one took a blind bit of notice of her before her sister got the royal sh*g of approval.

There is an awful lot of b*ll*cks spouted on this thread. I have worked in both the public and private sector and I can tell you that life in the public sector is so much harder nowdays. I manage 14 people, I work 10 hour days, I have trouble getting leave because I can't get staff to act up for me, I earn less than the national average wage, there is no overtime available so I don't get paid for the extra hours I work, my office is undermanned and those who do come in end up going off sick because of the stress, there is a pay freeze, there is no opportunty for promotion. No I didn't go on strike but after reading this thread I wish I had. I am earning half or what I did ten years ago with more stress to do what? To serve the public. The very public now who are saying that the public sector have got it easy. What you have to understand is this. You want your bins cleared, your children taught, your streets safe from crime right? None of these things actually create a cash flow. They are dependant on Governement funding. They are essential for the effecient running of our society yet those in the private sector think they are paying too much for these services. The truth is that they are not paying enough. I don't agree with strikes but the people who went out yesterday have got a grievance. If someone signs up for a contract they expect that to be honoured. The Government can't suddenly change someone's pension scheme after 20 odd years of service. Where does that happen in the public sector? I am all up for equality. BUt that applies to both sectors. You want change fine, but for new starters not people who signed up for a package years ago.

Abolutely, and while they are at it they can standardise the pay and perks too so a massive pay rise for me with a company car, mobile phone and laptop. We do live in the real world mate and trust me, the private sector pays better and offers better perks - unless you count free paper clips as a perk.

Thi is quite chilling and will, if made law, make homes less safe not more safe. More householders will end up injured or dead. It will not deter burglars but it will ensure that they go on jobs tooled up. I can't believe the quote about encouraging little old ladies to stab people. Unbelievable.

You cite one case. Do you know what actaully happened? Why do you think someone who breaks into your house is remotely interested at getting at your children? Confrontation is "highly likely" if you decide to chase the villian. And why whisper. You want the bloke to hear so that he knows the cops are on the way. Most people have moble phones if not cordless phones in the bedroom. You can go on making excuses all you like but if you really want a fight vote for dear old Ken Clarke and you will be sorted. or maybe even dead because the chances are if this bill gets passed burglars will start to carry knives and guns.

I read the case files ever day. Come and talk to our lawyers. You start from the assumption that people who break into your home are intent on doing you harm. They are not, they just want to steal things from you. That is not an offence punishable by death.

Its got nothing to do with shouting. It comes back to using reasonable force. LIke it or not, if you stab someone to death the court is going to take some convincing that is reasonable. You need to justify taking a life compared to taking a telly.

Blimey, reading some of the stuff on here I must be missing something. It seems it is wonderful working in the public sector. Makes me wonder why half of my staff applied for the early exit scheme recently.

Really, go look at the records and see how many burglaries end with violence between the two parties. The last thing they want is to get nicked and most are more scared than the people they are robbing.

I think the point is that you call the police immediately, not after a long discussion with him! To give you some idea of where you stand legally - burglary is an either way offence. This means that the case can be heard in either the Magistrates Court or the Crown Court depending on the seriousness of the case or if the defendant elects for a Crown Court trial. Manslaughter or muder are indictable only offences, that is they are offences that can only be heard in the Crown Court because of the serious nature of the offences and the greater sentencing power of the court for guilty verdicts.

Anyone who becomes successful (in the country at least) immediately becomes "uncool." This is the John Peel School of Coolness where you have to find a rubbish band who no one has heard of and have made one good record. You must then champion their cause to all who will listen even though you probaly don't listen to it yourself. Thing is music it totally subjective. How to you decide which band/arist is better than another? Record sales are one yardstick but if you really don't like a band like Coldplay for example, the fact they shift shedloads of CDs isn't going to make one iota of difference. If you follow a band because they are cool and not nerdy I would suggest that you are doing so for the wrong reason. I have just started listening to Mumford & Sons and Fleet Foxes. A couple of years ago I wouldn't have touched them with a barge pole. I am not soing so because someone says they are cool. I saw Mumford & Sons on the TV and liked them and I found a Fleet Foxes CD lying around at work, shoved it in the PC and liked it. Years ago my mate was crazy about Neil Young. At the time I was very into English Prog, Yes, ELP, Genesis and couldn't get my head around that American whine. Now I love Neil Young. (By the way, for the younger members of this thread Prog was huge in this country in the early 70s despite being very "uncool.") If you like something go with it if you don't, don't.

By the way, if this was a discussion you wouldn't have just come out with this crass statement, you would have expanded on why you think Coldplay are boring etc. But instead you just make a statment as though it is wriiten in stone somewhere. Happy to oblige. If you had posted that you had just watched a concert by Band X and I didn't care for Band X I would have thought fair play, not my cup of tea but so what. I wouldn't have then joined the thread and had a pop at Band X. I am sure millions of people think Coldplay are rubbish but I had just seen their concert and thought it was great. Silly me for saying so because it then means that it becomes a "cool" competion. Oh, someone likes Coldplay, lets have a dig. No it isn't. I spoke to one of our lawyers today for clarification. For years the law has made provision for protection of your person or property. You are allowed to defend yourself using "reasonable force." Causing the death of another person immediately puts you at risk of a serious charge, including murder. As I keep saying, you can stop them being a threat by calling the police. Most of them will leg it anyway, unless they have been unluckly enough to stumble into your abode, in which case....

It is not difficult. A burgler is someone who breaks into your home to steal something. I imagine if someone wanted to kill you they could do that anywhere, not just in your home. Burglers are called burglers because they burgle. You are confusing them with murderers.

How may burglers actually commit murder?

Perhaps the players should take some of the blame? And you can say Burely did a poor job but the fact reamins that at the point he left he was the best performing manager in terms of points per games that we had had.

I am a civil servant but I won't be striking on Thursday. Not because I don't agree with the sentiment but I don't agree with strikes. I also think it is not unreasonable to change the pension structure for new starters given the state of the economy. But to change it now for people who have been working (mostly on below average wages) for the public secor for years is just plan wrong.
