Eastleigh - analysis?

There were a number of notable players missing from the game - eg Davis, Stern, trialists etc. (I think this is true reading the OS report). Wondering whether this might indicate that we're likely to have a bloated squad of mediocre players and/or players that do not compliment each other? For me this is indicative of MW's weakness as a manager. Comment?

Eh? I thought that Davis is technically out of contract and unless something pretty amazing happens really soon as in tomorrow he is off to West Ham. He has already had a medical so they won't risk playin him. Stern is currently injured I thought and I am sure Wotte said that the trialist would not at Eastleigh.

I would not read too much in to it just yet, if they are still not playing ok a couple of weeks then yes maybe there should be some cause for alarm.

Players out of contract like Davis, Euell, BWP and John could not play for insurance reasons. The two trialists were not signed in time to play.

Ah ok that explains absense thanks.

Still concerned that we'll end up with a

Rag tag side that has little or no cohesion. It would not surprise me to see us struggle in L1 quite considerably, Swiss money or not, because of this.

Pleas can you explain MW weakness?

It's tied in with the feeling that he does not know the English game. Tbf I think he is an ok coach, however it is the selection of a cohesive team and the manner in which plays them which let's him down IMO.

I reckon Kelvin will sign a new deal with us if the swiss buy us & turn down the Hammers?

I truly hope so - we need players here who WANT to play for Saints. KD has all the right qualities both as a player, leader and exponent of the club.

I don't know what anyone expects of pre-season friendlies. 1st half was a 1st team side on paper, but just hoofed it around. 2nd half was abunch of youngsters. Either way it's July, there will be comings and goings (with a bit of luck) before we start, and League 1 sides and probably most CCC ones play crap football. We've got a long way to get back to 1984.

I too think that he is holding out to see what happens with the takeover before joining them. The reliable source of The Sun claims that he will sign for them Monday but I wouldn't be so sure. The question is would he rather play every game for us or sit on the subs bench for them?

TBH it actually seemed strange to be playing a game so early. I can't recall friendlies so early.

I hold to the belief that our pre-season last year was not what was needed for a tough CCC campaign and that too much emphasis was given in pre-season interviews about ball-work instead of fitness work, and I think many of us felt the fitness levels were too low last year.

So my only two questions after Saturday would be -

1) Why do we seem to be repeating last season's football not fitness pre-season build-up

2) Did we play a PROPER 4-4 fookin 2 or was there still some form of Diamond formation in there.

Keeping an eye on both those issues would be my main concern at the moment rather than expecting to see us playing like the '84 team. I REALLY don't think the Diamond or 4-2-3-1 and it's derivates are how we should be starting out life in L1. Some tactical variations are fine but at this level and with the quality of players that L1 has?.....

From my scout at the game Mr Pulis would not get into the Easleigh team..I asked about the other Saints stars and was told only about 3/4 maybe 4/5........But overall they do not appear to have had a proper pre season fitness campaign....As per recent seasons (no fitness) and will suffer 8/9/10 games or so into the season....Football /match fitness....Yes..but not fit enough by a long way......I believe this stated opinion is very similar to what happened last year......Apart from being bullied and sussed as regards our tactics and lack of options/variety..

Long way to go.....COYRs..

New faces must be proper footballers to suit the league we play in..... A fit determined Murty and Dutch size back would help .....3/4 others required now...

paterson one chance one goal though.

I know it's a meaningless game but I keep saying that Patterson looks the part to me. I'd be interested to hear a little bit more about how he performed if possible?

Can anyone who was there say how we lined up? Who was left back for example?

Gobern first half, haven't got a clue second half. Other than that the first half was a pretty normal 4-4-2 with Thomson and Holmes on the wings and Paterson and Rasiak up top.

No-one looked that up for playing football. not surprised, it's july, it was warm. even the crowd were quiet and disinterested. i was anyway.

fairly even game, not many chances, no stand out performances. bart did okay really, one good save, good catching and kicking. forecast not so good, although a worse defence in front of him, he palmed in a weak shot late on.

i don't think rasiak moved in the first half, or touched the ball. paterson one chance one goal though.

No change with rasiak then!!
