spyinthesky Posted 8 July, 2009 Share Posted 8 July, 2009 First of all it is great news that someone with the apparent werewithal and business acumen of Markus Leibherr should be interested in Saints rather than the ragtag alternatives. However what attracts a 61 yr old man, with no loyalty to this area and no interest in footy, to SFC? Reportedly he has shelled out £13m plus a likely investment of at least £2m+ to strenghen a very weak squad. Based on a reasonable return of 5% he needs to earn £750k a year to justify his initial investment and hope that better times will increase the value of the club and see a decent capital appreciation when he comes to sell, as undoubtedly he will. To me the good thing here is that the new owner does appear to have decent business skills and, hopefully, fully understands the immediate requirement to build bridges with the fan base. Having said that I find the return of Andy Oldknow rather strange. Most posters here are committed fans and hopefully will provide full support to the new regime. The real trick is to gain the support of the floating and/or disillusioned fans. It is a shame Hants Radio is not around to help stimulate this interest. Great news today. Let's enjoy it without setting our sights too high for the moment. Us supporters have had to take a great deal of ridicule. Quite a few of those previously laughing at our predicament are now rather jealous. Good times!!

saints_is_the_south Posted 8 July, 2009 Share Posted 8 July, 2009 In his statement Leibherr stated he was in this for the long term so we needn't worry about him wanting to sell us too soon!
.comsaint Posted 8 July, 2009 Share Posted 8 July, 2009 Apparently - Liebherr took a look around St Marys and "instantly fell in love with the club"...which is totally understandable of course!

NickG Posted 8 July, 2009 Share Posted 8 July, 2009 remember the scale of his wealth, Don't know what average person in UK is worth, but lets say £500,000 - if they spent £1500 on something -like a plasma - would you be qustioning what return they would get? Thats what spending £15,000,000 is like for him!
EastleighSoulBoy Posted 8 July, 2009 Share Posted 8 July, 2009 I think that stability and a good bit of team building are needed this season. If, by chance, we made the playoffs/promotion than that would be a brilliant bonus. Walk before we run and patience from the fans.

BadgerBadger Posted 8 July, 2009 Share Posted 8 July, 2009 Maybe he's coming to a time in his life where he wants to 'play' with some of his wealth and see if he can build a club worthy of his acumen and expertise. He's certainily saying all the right things and we are a sleeping giant given the right input. The english football league is a challenge alot of wealthy people seem to enjoy, it's not all about chucking your wad around and he seems like a good addition to the family - WELCOME ABOARD MARKUS, you're most welcome. I've read so many reports this evening that I cannot remember the source, but one definitely cited a philanthropic motivation behind this.

I guess, for a businessman of Herr Liebherr's standing, shelling out £15m would be classed as an investment and there would have to be a return. Not many businessmen are philanthropic Supplementary question, will we be graced with the presence of Messrs Askham, Wiseman, Richards and others of the old guard next season? Will also be interesting to hear what Lawrie Mac and Leon Crouch have to say on the takeover.
doggface Posted 8 July, 2009 Share Posted 8 July, 2009 The only person who can answer is ML, however one thing I can add that in order to make his investment worth while for a range of reasons, promotion back to the premiership within 5 years needs to be the aim. If this was to occur his company would gain huge exposure worldwide if they were for example to sponsor our shirts.

spyinthesky Posted 9 July, 2009 Author Share Posted 9 July, 2009 No, but it was up until fairly shortly. It's the family init? The container port recently ordered some Liebherr cranes so some commercial link but small beer in the overall context of the Liebherr business Think the cranes were built in Ireland
Scummer Posted 9 July, 2009 Share Posted 9 July, 2009 I keep reading what a great businessman he is, but I wonder how much of his wealth is earned, and how much inherited? I would have thought most of his money comes from his stake in the Liebherr group that he was given.
