S-Clarke Posted 18 August, 2009 Share Posted 18 August, 2009 I know it's said alot, but I've never seen such a slow, lumbering predictiable team than we have at the moment. We will not be successful at this level if we do not add pace to this team. Our front line is too static and our midfield is too lightweight and slow, we have plenty of times to hit teams on the break but this often breaks down because we're so slow. I really hope Pard's has a pacy player up his sleeves because we're screaming for it. We need someone up front who can play on the shoulder of the CB worrying the oppo...causing them problems and creating space with his pace. Then we need a winger who has the ability to get to the by line and beat players with pace - this is a quality seriously lacking in this side at the moment. We're so easy to play against because we don't worry the oppo enough...and it's all to obvious that teams at all levels are most worried about pace. Please - sign some pace!!! S-Clarke Posted 18 August, 2009 Author Share Posted 18 August, 2009 If it was that simple everyone would do it. well everyone we've come up against this season manages to cause us problems with pace...it's out there and even at lower levels you can pick up some gems. Kightly at wolves is a good example, same with the two peterborugh front lads I guess our issue is again down to the lack of scouting options...because the players are out there. Genk Posted 18 August, 2009 Share Posted 18 August, 2009 A Nathan Dyer type figure. Someone you can give the ball to and will run at defenders at pace. McNamee for them tonight was doing Lloyd James ever time and getting crosses in. Thats what we need. Lambert will be there to nod them in but as it stands, we have nothing on the wings. I fear that we won't get a winger in before the window shuts as a CB is bigger priority.
Arizona Posted 18 August, 2009 Share Posted 18 August, 2009 Worryingly, it wasn't just slow running, it was slow thinking. By the time we got round to attempting a pass, the target had been closed down and it just ended up with a hoof or a backpass. Nobody played with any intelligence at all tonight. Agreed, the only defender we have who's comfortble on the ball is Harding, we could really do with someone like Size or Cork in defence who can bring the ball out and make a decent pass. Wotton was very wastefull and even Schneiderlin doesn't really keep things ticking over very well, I think he'd be better alongside a midfielder he can trust. Some pace out wide, even if it's just one flank would make us such a better side. Schneiderlin would have an out ball and we'd actually have an attacking outlet. We have to start at least one hopefully two of Thomson, Mills, Gobern and Holmes in the next game. If we go with Paterson, James or Lallana outwide i'll probably just go home when Brentford get there first.
Marino Posted 19 August, 2009 Share Posted 19 August, 2009 Millwall have got the blueprint for this league. All their players had pace - even Harris when he came on looked quicker than our lot - and except for their left back they all looked 6' plus. Hmmmm could be good but having one player twenty times faster than the rest of them could be a problem - we need a whole team of Bolt's!

It's not just pace, it's being in motion all the time, we look slow because we've got a standing start whilst the opposition is already moving. Oh, and everything that goes through Lallana comes with a 20 second late delivery time. I've never seen a player who is more interested in dropping a shoulder or doing a trick than actually progressing the play before (well, ok, maybe Fabrice), but there he is. Ball comes to feet, his slow trot sucks all of the momentum out of the move, defence has 10 men back, we give the ball away... and repeat.
The9 Posted 19 August, 2009 Share Posted 19 August, 2009 We didn't think he's give up the athletics yet, but did think maybe Dwain Chambers or Darren Campbell might be interested. Having played alongside (and against) Darren Campbell a couple of times when he was working in South Wales, just after he left Weymouth FC. I can assure you that Newport and District parks league is his footballing standard (well, it was from 1995-97). He can cross, but every second touch was a tackle - not easy controlling the ball at that pace. And he's not got enough stamina to repeat his sprints for 90 minutes either. Sorry, but I don't think pace was the main issue last night (it is an issue just not the overriding one). Bigger problem is the inability of many of our players to think positively. Most of our defenders (with exception of Harding) and our midfield were clueless. Every time we got the ball there was never any thought about attacking, invariably a promising position ended up with the ball being passed back to Davis, sometimes poorly, and with Davis then humping the ball upfield back to Swindon or putting out of play for a throw to Swindon. It was embarrassing how often this same scenario played out, and I'm sorry but this is actually as much to do with Davis as with the defenders and MF. His kicking and distribution is shocking (nearly as bad as the Swindon keeper who was awful but got away with it because he was not pressured). Davis is a great shot stopper and kept the scoreline respectable but otherwise he is at best average (ducks to avoid incoming). Swindon were not endowed with pace apart from their young right winger. What Swindon had last night was not pace but space, they were playing against a non-existent midfield. Therefore they could set up attacks because they had time to place balls to the offensive players. They weren't very good at it thank goodness. The winger was also very ably dealt with by Harding, so although he cause us some problems, in fact his impact was minimised by some excellent LB play.
