NickG Posted 11 September, 2009 Share Posted 11 September, 2009 So far we have had 20,100 v Millwall - still in summer holidays, 12.30 kick off and on sky. 11,000 v Northampton in cup -lower league, midweek 19,200 v Brentford 12,000 v Bham - mideweek cup 17,000 v Colchester For a team with hardly any home wins in last two years I think that is pretty impressive support - for a league 1 side. In premiership this year average so far for Wigan -17,000 Skates - 17,000 Bham - 20,000 Burnley - 20,000 Fulham - 25,000 Hull 23,000 And if you look at this from skate OS - day before prem game against one of their rivals - http://www.portsmouthfc.co.uk/?qs_media=html&cms_id=109 they have given away 1,000 tickets kids for £1 and still have more than 3,000 tickets left in their ground of 20,000. I am pretty proud of our support.

I am pretty proud of our support. TBH, I am ambivalent about it and for every example that shows us in a good light you can find examples that show us in a poor light namely Derby, Norwich and Leeds and given how long the latter have been in the doldrums their support is remarkable. The problem Wigan, Burnley and Fulham have is they are all in close proximity to hotbeds of football and and the former especially a fan base split by a greater love of Rugby League as may be the case with Hull. Apart from Pompey where is our challenge to watch professional football. My guess is if we were currently going through what Pompey fans are enduring then our fanbase would be eroded and lets not forget even a desperate call to arms post administration did not achieve an all to late capacity crowd for the Charlton game falling short by c.5,000. To put that into context we had a sell out for the Man U game and a suspected thumping and the embarrassing acceptance of their taunts - you'll only here to see United. Then there was the sell out game v Sheff Utd where we we lucky to avoid the drop a year earlier. Makes you question the motives of some 'fans' as far as I am concerned. I'm not proud of our support but proud of the loyalty shown by those fans who consistently turn up to support the team. No doubt as we start to enjoy some success over the next few years the plastics and their excuses will return frightened they may miss out on something but without any acknowledgement to those who have kept this club going. Perhaps we should reduce the capacity and keep them from returning and reduce our costs in the process.
saint_stevo Posted 11 September, 2009 Share Posted 11 September, 2009 Wonder if the attendances would drop as we continue to seek our first win? Alternatively, if we get on a good run they could grow even more. I have awoken with a new sense of optimism today, and believe we will beat Charlton tomoro. Easy. They are also giving away exec tickets in a competion on Wave 105 this morning, and to paraphrase "you'll need to be by your computers, because this be a question that only the die-hards will know" (or something like that). I assumed all the 'die-hards' would already have their tickets.
sandwichsaint Posted 11 September, 2009 Share Posted 11 September, 2009 Not sure why we didn't close the whole of the Chapel end this season and concentrate our crowds of say 18k-22k on the remaining three sides? We would surely run the ground much more economically if we concentrated the stewards/police/caterers/turnstile people in the bottom 3/4 of the ground and effectively mothballed the whole of the top end; at the moment we still have to staff and police all 4 sides of the ground and the concourses, the corners are closed and the fans are in some areas spread thinly. Let's re-open the two Northam corners, get the atmosphere going, and have a 3/4 full, prem-stylee 'full house'. I hope if we are in this league next season serious consideration will be given to this (apologies to those that do sit in the Chapel, but for the greater good I really do think this model would give the team better support and create a better match day for everyone). Gis Posted 11 September, 2009 Share Posted 11 September, 2009 I think we are getting pretty good attendances .........but are the club being as pro-active in getting people along as they could be? Look at what Charlton do...cheap tickets (for London)....special deals for kids......and coaches from just about every large town in Kent. No it wouldn't the ground would look much worse than it does at the moment if it was to have one whole end completely empty. Leave it how it is, the "spread" of support is going to be as good as it gets with our current crowds.
unionhotel Posted 11 September, 2009 Share Posted 11 September, 2009 Why not give over one complete end to the away supporters? This would concentrate our fanbase and dissipate theirs. Simples!!!
benjii Posted 11 September, 2009 Share Posted 11 September, 2009 Our support is excellent. If we go on a winning streak we will see 23,000+ in SMS. It really is a crying shame how this club has been allowed to rot over the last 4 or 5 years. When you look at some of the pitiful outfits in the Premier League (Birmingham, Pompey, Blackburn, Bolton etc) I have no doubt that, now we have good ownership and management, we will be back in the mid-tier of the Premier League within 5 years. I also think a couple of wins will bring a fair few more into the stadium and any sort of run, could see them become regulars again.

Clifford Nelson Posted 11 September, 2009 Share Posted 11 September, 2009 The attendance so far shows that there is about 20.000 core fans, who if treated with respect by the club will turn up. If we start winning we will get a good amount of fair weather sailors (no, not that sort) as well. And this is League One!
rocknrollman no2 Posted 11 September, 2009 Share Posted 11 September, 2009 We are and always have been better supported than Pompey. We now find ourselves in League One,yet we are still getting better support than the Skates. This club, despite all thats gone on before is the best supported club on the South coast and hopefully us fans will soon have a team worthy of our support. I agree with your views about some of the poorly supported teams in the Premiership and Wigan and Pompey are the worse offenders but Birmingham with their catchment area is probably a bigger disgrace. However, I don't see us being a mid table Premiership side within 5 years as it will take 2 to get out of this league then another 2 to get out of the CCC if we maintain realistic ambitions and then we could yo-yo like almost everyone else has for a few years before we consolidate as Fulham and Wigan have or Portsmouth had. 6-10 years before we are classed as a mid-tier premier league club IMO unless Mr Liebherr has a change of heart about his level of investment. Wes Tender Posted 12 September, 2009 Share Posted 12 September, 2009 I agree with your views about some of the poorly supported teams in the Premiership and Wigan and Pompey are the worse offenders but Birmingham with their catchment area is probably a bigger disgrace. Yes Birmingham has a large catchment area as Britain's second city. But then again, they also have Aston Villa, Wolves, WBA, Walsall vying for support too. And then there are all those other Midland clubs at similar distances to those that are travelled typically by our fans, Leicester, Coventry, Derby, Notts, etc. Add in that Birmingham were historically the newer addition to the top flight compared to some of those others and you have very good reasons why their support might not equate to their catchment area. Wigan is also a Rugby town and geographically has lots of competition from other major football clubs, where it is unglamorous. Pompey has little excuse, because apart from us in the third division, there is little in the way of competition as a Premiership club until London 50 miles away. Could not live with those sort of figures, 5 years and we will be back. SFC needs a few wins and watch the momentum build. You may be a realist but it is bl**dy boring Anyway cannot chat of the Charlton in 10mins , sons driving up but poor old dads driving back.
