david in sweden Posted 19 October, 2009 Share Posted 19 October, 2009 we had in the great McMenemy days (5 former England captains at one time) is a lovely part of our history but hardly relevant today. However, coming down to Earth (in League 1)... we have a number of players in the squad who have previously captained other teams... at some level or other . Of course Kelvin Davis is presently team captain (not easy as goalie) but surely Murty was captain at Reading for some time, I think (?) and formerly Wotton was at Plymouth. I know that Dean Hammond was formerly captain at Colchester. Have I missed anyone.......... ? This means we have a lot of leadership skills out there, surely that has to be a big PLUS factor in the revival ?
Brussels Saint Posted 19 October, 2009 Share Posted 19 October, 2009 (edited) Think Jaidi captained Tunisia..............Morgan was the French U19 captain I think as well. I'm not sure actually if its the fact of being made captain is important, more the case of now having players who are mentally strong during difficult moments on the pitch. Ok typically those type of players get looked at for captain material, but its not the reason perse. I guess you can also add Harding & Lambert to the list of mentally strong players. 70's Mike Posted 19 October, 2009 Share Posted 19 October, 2009 And who would argue with Jaidi, if he says mark that one, you do it
david in sweden Posted 19 October, 2009 Author Share Posted 19 October, 2009 And who would argue with Jaidi' date=' if he says mark that one, you do it[/quote'] .I was hoping we'd get a central defender who was built like a brick outhouse ........and now we got one. Let's face ..who would want to challenge him hard twice in a game.?
Matthew Le God Posted 19 October, 2009 Share Posted 19 October, 2009 Chris Perry has been a captain
S-Clarke Posted 19 October, 2009 Share Posted 19 October, 2009 Murty, Jaidi, Hammond, Lambert, Wotton...have all captained successful teams....and that is our spine. Not bad at all! makes a difference when you inject that sort of mentality right through the team.
SAR Boy Saint Posted 19 October, 2009 Share Posted 19 October, 2009 Slightly off thread, but has AP used an "on-field" captain yet, as he alluded to at the Fans Forum, or has he stuck with Kelvin?

Stuck with Kelvin so far i think, although he probably will at some point (maybe next season) go with an on-field captain. Should easily be Hammond, no contest based on his showings so far. shurlock Posted 19 October, 2009 Share Posted 19 October, 2009 While I dont particularly rate him as a player, Wotton behaves the most 'captainy' on the field. Seen him pick up and motivate some of the newer and younger players who've otherwise had to fend for themselves. Fair play to him for that. That was on my mind, too. I thought his concept of an outfield captain (to argue the case not to send off Thomas :-) ) was a good one, but see no update to KD as skipper yet. Like most, I would appoint Deano Hammond. I like to see midfielders skippering sides.

It is something that I noticed earlier that several of the team had those leadership qualities as former captains and you are quite right IMO as to why things are starting to turn around for us. I don't imagine that there is any problem caused by having so many former captains in the team, as I'm sure that they were chosen by their respective teams because they were mature enough as individuals to also recognise that whoever is chosen as captain by the manager, that decision is for the common good of the team. Perhaps Pardew has already discussed with the outfield players his thoughts on the need to have somebody there to argue the toss with the referee where it is not so easy for Kelvin to do that from the Goal. Amongst the main candidates are indeed Wotton (if the experiment continues to bring success playing him) and Hammond. Lallana is still a youngster learning, Papa has the language problems and is a loanee. But Lambert and Connolly (if he proves to be free of injury) could also be under consideration too. It's good to see some " better form" from Wotton who hasn't been the most popular player with some fans on this site, but I think if we had to have someone upfield with the armband - it should be Hammond. A front line with Lambert, Lallana and Connolly - (and wide men like Papa Weigo).. does look great on paper, hope they can replicate on the pitch. I've been hard on Wotton, saying on more than one occasion that he is not up to playing even in the third division, but seemingly on his performances during the past two or three matches he is doing a decent job as sweeper in front of the back four, although I wonder whether that is a role that Perry could improve on with his better passing ability and vision. On the other hand, Wotton is beefier than Perry, so perhaps that is why he has been effective in that role. I agree that Hammond would make a very good captain, him or Murty for me. chocco boxo Posted 20 October, 2009 Share Posted 20 October, 2009 Wooton has been playing better it seems, against teams with a bit of physical muscle Wootton and Jaidi present a formidable wall. Hopefully his form will continue, I feel he is one of those players that his team mates would have 1st on the team sheet.
Junior Mullet Posted 20 October, 2009 Share Posted 20 October, 2009 Pretty sure Thomas captained the side a few times and was captain for his previous club for a while.
ozzmeister Posted 20 October, 2009 Share Posted 20 October, 2009 Would we not consider Morgan as captain, or at least Assistant captain (if such a thing exists). Gives him a role in the team and something to aspire to. He has already showed his credentials at junior levels and has a wealth of experience around him to learn from. It certainly gives us a lot of experience at the back.
