In the year 1982 spanning seasons 1981/82 & 1982/83 we had 5 England Captains (one of them a future captain) involved with the first team games.

Mick Mills made his debut on 13th November 1982, Alan Ball had already played his last game for Saints on 30th October 1982.

Mick Channon's last game for Saints was 15th May 1982, the same for Kevin Keegan.

Peter Shilton's debut for Saints was 28th August 1982. Mark Wright's was 17th April 1982.

The season we ended runner up in the old First Division 1983/84 Ball, Channon and Keegan had already left.

The golden age was also a time when we could compete in the transfer market. We had little money, no investors yet we were able to sign the best.

We also managed runner up to Liverpool.

Now without sugar daddies that is almost impossible now.

In 83/84 when we did that other teams in the division included:

Notts Forest now Championship

QPR now Championship

Watford now Championship

Ipswich Town now Championship

Norwich City now Div 1

Leicester City now Championship

Luton Town now Conference

WBA now Championship

Coventry City now Championship

Notts County now Div 2

So including us that is half of the teams that played in the division that season!

That's aboout the 4th time the book has been referenced this week. You sure you're not on commission from FF for a reprint or something ;)

But yes, the Golden Age, days full of excitement and Pride at being a Saints fan. May they soon be back at the TOP level.

And yes I am in agreement that the sooner ALL sugar daddy's at all clubs are gone then football will become real again, but it won't happen and we have our own who we are happy with and long may we be one of the lucky ones!

I think the golden age was 1963 to 1969.

A great cup run promotion to Div 1 consolidation in Div 1 - The start of years of success and great memories.

The eighties which of course were great times were the culmination of the years in the sixties

A big difference between the early 80's & now was that football was not as trendy or respectable as it is today. My future father in law was disgusted when he found out that I was a football supporter. To him, football was watched by violent yobs who were constantly being arrested. The fact that I supported my team away from home just made me even worse in his eyes.

To us Saints fans this was the golden age. To the football world at large this was the lowest point in the national game. Attendances generally were low (from memory attendances of 10 - 12.000 were commonplace for top flight games at places like Luton & Notts County) & with events lke Heysel and Bradford just around the corner, it is only in Southampton that the early 80's are looked on with affection.

He won't get a reprint, as there are still a few original print run copies available, I believe. ;)

It's nice to see someone take the trouble to back up their opinion with some hard evidence. As it happens, he's certainly picked the golden era, but for me I'll add the 1966 - 73 era, perhaps, with a touch of Chris Nichol's era too. And WGS's. I think I've covered everything there.

Oops, forgot 1976..!

1960 until the arrival of the Premier League was on the whole a good time with a few poor seasons.

Whilst since the arrival of the Premier League it has been generally a poor time with a few good seasons

I said we could compete with anyone.

We beat Man Utd 4-1 away (the famous Ron Davies 4 goals) M.U. finished 8th

We beat Champions Everton 2-1 at home.

We beat runners up Leeds 3-1 away.

I remember the Everton win really well I was working in London that day and it was the first win we had had in about fifteen games

We also beat Tottenham 1-0 at White Hart Lane - my first game. Ron Davies scored the winner, and we made a team with Alan Gilzean, Martin Chivers, Pat Jennings and (I think) Mike England look quite ordinary.

Yep 69/70 season as well.

I remember the season before. Skipped college to travel up mid week in January to WHL. Started snowing when we arrived and they called off the game about 10 minutes before it was due to start.

Travelled up again for the rearranged game at the end of the season. We lost 2-1 Davies scoring again. Bobby Stokes and Micky Judd were small forwards and just bounced off their big defenders. They pinched 6 place from us and we ended 7th. We qualified for Europe for the first time because you could could not field more than one team per city. Everton 3rd, Chelsea 5th and Tottenham 6th could not qualify because Liverpool and Arsenal finished 2nd and 4th respectively.

Happy memories.

I think they should reinstate this rule. ;)

We mustn't forget that Dave Watson also played for Saints Oct. 1979 - Oct.1981 (and also won 18 caps whilst here,) and did captain England on a few occasions.
