CLOTH EARS

We ran around a lot but when the crosses came in we were too often second to the ball.

Brighton wanted to win it more than we did I fear.

I wouldn't disagree with you tbh. Some of our players may well have got complacent after the nice things people had been saying about them recently. Brighton really wanted it MORE there is no doubt about that. IF they could keep that level of performance up then they might well make the top 6 themselves. We all know though that after about 5 or 6 games their level of performance will drop off as the new manager syndrome wears off, that is when Poyet will have to show them what he is made of. As for us we must now start again V Norwich on saturday and show people that this was a one off! We ARE better than today and we must now show that nigh on every week. We cannot afford to let ourselves be outfought like we were for most of todays game.

Brighton did a number on us. They wasted time from the first minute with the intention of interupting our high tempo game. This they did very effectively.

They also surrendered midfield putting lots of players back behind the ball but keeping two lively strikers up front.

Our two central defenders were poor.

Brighton should arguably have had a penalty whilst ours was debatable.

Overall Brighton deserved their win and well done to their fans for maintaining the one minutes silence.

What a difference between them and the Poorsmouth lot when they came down and whistled thro Ted Bates remembrance

Brighton had us figured out - crosses in from the wings for Rickie - stop him from settling and our attacks are limited to Antonio (or Papa) running in from the wing - Antonio did well but so did Brighton in terms of quickly swamping him to prevent his runs. In the first 15 mins it looked like he would create a goal for us but after that they adjusted an dneutralised his threat. We didn't change our pattern of play so all Brighton had to do was more of the same - knowing they had the legs to run past our back four.

Our only changes were Wayne in defense and Papa on for Antonio - no real variation in out play in an attempt to unsettle them

Poyet 1 - Pardew O

Or maybe our team has got complaicent again, as I warned (and was ridiculed for) last week ?

To be fair Alpine you said "I would rather see how the team responds to a victory rather than a defeat".

What about the numerous times in the last month or so where we won...and then won again?

To have considerably less points than Norwich and Charlton (not including deduction) at this stage of the season is a nightmare.

Some say we have a stronger side than these... we might do, but we are Southampton and are still inconsistant, unfortunately consistancy is what you need to get out of this league and if we lose to teams like Brighton at home we will NEVER EVER get out of this league.

REASONS WHY WE LOST:

1) Defence was gobsh*te. Gave their wingers far too much room. Gave them space, and helped them create clear cut chances. The only clear cut chances we got were from defensive scrambles. I'd bring Thomas in for Trotman next game y'know.

2) Reliance on Antonio. Come on, after 10 minutes it was obvious and Brighton started backing up their defender, so if he got beat (always) there would be another two coming in to clear it up. We didn't have another plan it seemed.

3) Passing it around too much at 1-2. Fact of life - you make mistakes. Playing long balls from wing to wing is more mistake prone, so we are more likely going to lose the ball. If we put it in early.... then at least we have tried to create something.

4) Lambert needs to get out of the wide positions. Sometimes he drifted out there (not often)... this must never happen again... he is the target man... KEEP HIM IN THE BOX!!!

5) New manager syndrome. Hartlepool fans are getting anxious (oh look... we have them soon) and Tranmere don't have a new man in yet do they? (oh look... we have them soon)

Overall NOT GOOD ENOUGH but think we can turn it around enough to stay up comfortably. This result kills off any belief that we can make the play offs unfortunately.

We have had our most consistent spell over the last 6-8 weeks than we have had for years and years. This was a blip, a defeat, these happen to all teams.

I wouldn't over anaylse it - i;d sit back and watch us go on another long unbeaten run - as we have shown we do.
