Nokia 5800

I have a 5800 - got it purely because it was one of the phones that I was entitled to as a free upgrade. Prior to that I was using Windows Mobile based phones, but decided on a change purley for the 'touch screen' experience.

I have had no problems with the phone in it's normal configuration, comes with an 8gig card and hard protective sleeve/cover. Found it very easy to set up for email and applications both on wireless and GSM - plays BBC IPlayer effortlessly (if you're into that sort of thing). There appears to be a decent array of apps available - although I doubt that the number comes anywhere near the iPhone. But - it depends on what you want he phone to do I guess.

I have have no problems with the touch screen at all (the 5800 also comes with a stylus, which slips neatly inside of the body of the phone) - but have never used an iPhone so I can't really compare I guess.

The only problem that I have had is that when I downloaded some Themes, installed them and selected them for use, some appeared to cause the battery life to deminish quite quickly. Without these selected the battery life is very good.

As I said - I got the phone purely because if was available as a free upgrade - I am more than happy with it, and have no real problems thus far - touch wood.

I have a 5800, as do a lot of other people I know. It certainly seems to be the cheaper alternative to an iphone, and the wireless is good (hey, you can get wireless networks almost everywhere now... even in Wetherspoons!)

It also comes with GPS. It's a bit of a hassle loading the maps and such on (especially if you have a mac) but well worth it.

Been a good phone for me so far, plus it comes with a good sized memory card to store loads of music and even some films for those long train journeys.

Personally I wish I'd got a contract with free internet because it would open up more features, including faster GPS.

Overall though, quality!

Bought one on e-bay for £130 to replace my 6300 (wanted WLAN etc) and not looked back, very good IMO, not had an iPhone so can't compare really but it does what i want it to and isnt painfully slow like some of the N-series Symbian 60 phones i have had in the past.

Give it a whirl, they also seem to hold value quite well

Thinking of getting one of these, anyone got one? Any arguments for or against? I need something with a large touch screen and wireless lan, any better options? Any advice much appreciated.

I couldn't get to grips with the touch screen. Nice tactile well designed phone but not as good a scren as the Samsungs IMO and Iphone as already suggested is really streets ahead although O2 poor value when you compare to 3. Symbian software (I think its called that) in the Nokia was very easy to use on my old N95 and the A-GPS very useful.

If you can cope with the screen and don't suffer fat/heavy/shaky/younameit finger syndrome then good value phone.

Well as my budget is around £150 ish i think thats the iphone out of the window! 5800 seems the way to go if Mickys testimony is anything to go by! Did you find a Saints theme by the way Micky?

Didn't find one Jeff - saw a Manyoo, Chelski and Pool one (as you'd expect I guess) but didn't find a Saints one. Have to be honest though I wasn't particularly looking for one.

I've been using one for the past 7 months - it takes reasonable pictures (certainly good enough to use on Facebook and display on a laptop screen, not sure about printing them off, but could try?), the camera has an LED flash which isn't great in low light and the pictures are grainy, however, it's good enough if you're not wanting to capture amazing, clear shots at night and as a lot of phones don't have a flash, it's good!

Internet browsing is very easy and good on it (plus it has HSDPA, '3.5g', which makes browsing even quicker).

Messaging and predictive is good - normal approach, fast and easy to use.

The touch screen is good, nice and clear and bright, but sometimes lacks responsiveness (compared to an iPhone of HTC Hero).

Call quality is fine with good call functions on the screen whilst making calls.

The mapping is great, I've even played around with the satnav, plugged in to the bluetooth system in my car with the directions coming through the stereo, seems to work well enough, despite a few random road selections at times.

Overall, I think it's a "very good" phone. I certainly prefer it to many others I've played with, including the Tocco and LG GT500 etc.

Next on my list as my 2nd mobile line is up for renewal this week is the Sony Ericsson Satio ... however, it has been withdrawn from sale this week due to rubbish software, grrrr.

You can get one of the standard 3G iphones (8g) for FREE now on Orange.

£29 per month contract, sign up for 18 months, 150 minutes free per month, 250 texts free per month and it's easy to keep your old number.

Or the new 3GS 16GB iphone you can get for £125 if you sign up for 24 months.

I've been on Vodafone for years but I'm gonna move across to Orange next week to get one.

Have a look at the various deals here........

If your pay as you go, 02 are currently offering unlimited texts and web for a £15 monthly to up, so this gives you £15 a month to cover your calls. If thats no good Simplicity I think has a certain amount of free texts, web and calls for £20 a month and no contract. Might be worth a look.

htc hero

+1 very nice phone but expensive if you're not on a contract. Just got mine on 3 with the 24 month Spotify deal; good deal if you want an iPhone alternative. A colleague has the 5800 - nothing special imo but they are cheap. I'd try and have a go with one first as I didn't like the touchscreen. Or if you want to stay with Nokia but want a phone that does a bit more maybe a N97?

Anyone know which networks are going to offer the Nokia X6? Seen it around the net, sounds like everything the N97 should have been (better processor, more responsive screen etc), but I've only seen it SIM-free so far (£400 at Play.com).

Ooooh, thats handy, I'm on Orange and its nearly upgrade time.

I have found orange to be pretty good tbh

Apart from the slightly dodgy coverage where I am (which is mainly down to the rubbish aerial in my Samsung Innov8), I haven't had a problem with Orange.
