In interview yesterday Pardew said that he is still only keeping an eye on play offs just wants to climb the table.

However, he did say that if, at the end of January, we are within 7 points of play offs we would have a good chance of making play offs.

Realistic targets for progress?

I strongly believe that we have a great chance of making the playoffs. Its all about momentum and consistency which we have at the moment. Norwich, the form team, and Leeds, the league leaders, will be a good gauge of where we are at present. I think that if we can win on tuesday night and not lose at the weekend then we will be in a very strong position come 2010. Teams will wobble due to pressure and if we can reduce our wobbles to blips then we will make the playoffs. It will be an extremely exciting season and I believe that we have the team to do it. COYR

If we beat Leeds, we will be 19 points behind them with 72 to play for. I'll take that. ;)

So would i , but i would also take a point at Elland Road because not many of our rivals will do that.

the season is 9 months long. we just need to be in the top place by the end of game 46

I'd prefer to reserve judgement until we have a game or two without Lambert.

We've been lucky with injuries/suspensions for the first time in ages this season (barring Murty, and Bart has covered well so far for KD)

I just worry that without RL up front holding the ball up we'll have more problems, could be completely wrong. But how we cope without him IMHO will be the key to our chances

It wouldn't surprise me if Pardew's talking two stories - one outside the dressing room and one inside it.

For those of us outside the dressing room it's a story of gradual progress with the possibility of a playoff spot if we can keep developing.

Inside the dressing room, and as part of the process of building confidence and setting challenging goals, I suspect he's been very clear that this team has everything it takes to make the play offs, and that falling short of them would be something of a failure.

I don't think he wants to let the players off the hook of their own potential - as in, we are not settling for seventh.

target reached by end of December (7 points from play offs).

Makes me think, if Pardew went to Markus/Nicola now and said

"We hoped to be within 7 points of play offs by the end of January - and then said we would look towards the play offs. We hoped to get good crowds of about 20,000.

It is now the end of December, we have reached the points target and have attracted 30,000..

..lets talk about the January transfer window budget...."

Yep, crowds are good but don't forget it was a Boxing day fixture today which help to get past the 30k mark. By the time the next home game comes around it will be 23k/24k at very most - which of course is still great for League One.

Steve Claridge on the Football League Show (Boxing Day) gave his opinion that Saints will make the Play-Offs. It would be surprising if Pardew does not believe the same, but if he set it as a target that would place more pressure on himself and the team. Maybe he is just being cautious but if so, it would be a shame, because pressure to win should be a factor in achieving success.

What he's saying publicly and privately may be two very different things?

I don't think he can say much else just now.¨

HIS team has "earned" 35 league points already - good enough to be in a play-off place. If it wasn't for the -10 , we'd all be talkng about play-offs by now and notbe sitting in mid-table.

If we continue the points winning form, then we'll get closer every game, but now we are at half way in table the teams above us are those who are winning games and not those we've climbed over - who lose games regularly.

From now on it gets a little tougher.

You're right of course, but AP makes enough sense when interviewed but this is the 64,000 dollar question...and he'll keep his cards close to his chest on this one. If he were to say YES at this stage and things go wrong... he'd have put his head in the noose, and I think he's smarter than that.

IMHO I think everyone knows that IF we continue to get results as we have, then we'll get one of those places.

"So we'll make small changes and build on that," he added. "I'm not going to come in and make a million changes so we'll do things nice and steady and hopefully we can get rid of the minus ten quickly and around Christmas time I'd like to think we could be somewhere near the middle then go on from there."
