Not sure if this is correct MB...

Listening to a humorous aside (not even an allegation) at MLT's dinner down here I think the article was more likely to have been along the lines that a certain possible ex sportsperson had mistakenly thought DoI would be a source of fresh ice cubes for his G&T

If I think of Shilton I also think Forest, Plymouth, Leicester and England.

Off course I also think of Southampton - Shilton was a star for us between 1982-87 made over 180 appearances I believe?

Think he also got most of his England caps while with us and think TSW voted him our best player ever.

He is fo sho our best keeper ever.

Bizarre, he played almost the same number of games for us as he did for Forest, and I think won more caps when he was with us than he had previously - partly because up until he joined us he shared the keeping responsibilities with Clemence.

I also don't get how you don't think of Shilts at Stoke and Derby, yet recall he made 34 appearances for Plymouth in the twilight of his career - 34, less than 1 season. Lets not forget his time at Leyton Orient as well, 9 appearances that took him past the magic 1000 appearances.

Brilliant keeper, best we ever had by a mile (with due respect to Niemi) and possibly the best keeper in the world ever (at least close behind Banks and Yashin).

On another note, I was shocked the other day. Remember that I live in Wiltshire, went to get a haircut and was chatting to the young guy cutting my hair, keen Liverpool supporter. Got chatting about Saints, and mentioned Mick Channon. He said, I know that name isn't he the race horse trainer? I laughed and pointed out to him that he was previously one of the best footballers in the country and played 46 times for England. The guy was amazed, genuinely. Its shocking the lack of knowledge of yongsters about football and especially loacl players.

Strange thinking GS, England of course and definately Saints, remember he was at the opening of a shop up on Rownhams road, might have been the bookies, when I was at senior school, we waited outside to get his autograph and got a detention for being late back to school after dinner, punishment was worth the crime.

Of course, Vectis. Any Saints fan who doesn't know about Saints best ever keeper [officially voted for by TSW voters] must have stuck their fingers in their ears and gone la-la-la, every time his name was mentioned. Or they're about 10 years old, and haven't googled him yet. But why should we bother..? This is from our own archives:

As to your other subject, that's happened to me too. It wasn't Micky Channon, this time, but the fact that a local youngish Saints fan didn't know Kevin Keegan played for Saints..! In fact, he only just recognised the name. I mean, wtf..? :smt103

Thing about Shilts, for England and Saints is that he almost never made a mistake. Any that he did, were made up for by keeping the ball out of the goal following defensive f-ips or brilliant attacking play. If a forward was clear on goal with Shilts in it, I'd be pretty confident it wouldn't go in. Totally brilliant keeper, competing against Clemence who was also brilliant in a time when our goalies were the best !

Going on BBC's Dancing on Ice next year.

Now, I don't normally watch this type of carp, but......... would be nice for Shilton to win it :)

I think you'll find its on ITV.

Sinitta to win for me ... but then I'm that age!

Anyone else see a slight disadvantage for Heather Mills?!

Yes, the viewers have to like the contestant.

But if she's finding it pure agony I'm sure the great British Public will find it in their hearts to make sure she stays in for as long as possible.

I can't wait for her partner to do the "head banger" with her, just to see how well the leg is connected.

Can't wait for the aeroplane style manouvre.....

On a side note, just because a fan doesn't know about Shilton or Keegan, doesn't make them less of a fan. It just makes you (us) old :)

Because I'm a Saints fan,I listened to my Dad and Grandads tales of ex-Saints and read about them too.

I think its good to know your history.I never saw Terry Paine,Charlie Wayman,Ted Bates,John Sydenham and all but I know what they did for our club.I've made damn sure my kids know about Shilton and Keegan as well.
