NorthamSteve Posted 17 January, 2010 Share Posted 17 January, 2010 Did anyone else notice that Fonte has a touch of the Claus Lundekvam's about him yesterday? He really showed us his claus. (pun intended) If it wasn't for the well conditioned hair, I would have sworn he was back.
Badger Posted 17 January, 2010 Share Posted 17 January, 2010 Is this about the match yesterday or was he out in town last night going through the woodbines ? Seriously though I think he will prove to be a cultured defender similar to Claus when at his best.
Crowds Posted 17 January, 2010 Share Posted 17 January, 2010 He looked a class above yesterday particularly liked him telling Hammond wha he should be doing and where he should be. IMO club captain next season the guys good.
rick1976.4.38 Posted 17 January, 2010 Share Posted 17 January, 2010 he was outstanding yesterday considering it was his first game for us,well confident and very much in the claus mold, with jaidi it could be a partnership ala claus and killer. oxfordshire_saint Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 I'm told he scores the odd goal, in which case he's nothing like Claus
paulwantsapint Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 Claus scored the odd goal in as much as it was very odd that he scored norways 1000th ever goal before he netted for Saints in proper game

Seriously though I think he will prove to be a cultured defender similar to Claus when at his best. Unfortunately, Claus' heritage with Saints is clouded by a couple of dramatic headlines, when in fact his overall performances for Saints were exceptional over a 10 year period. He is one of only 10 players to have played over 400 games for SFC and the only non-British player ever to do so. He wasn't bought for his goal-scoring ability but he and Michael Svensson were two of the BRAVEST defenders I'd watched in the last 40 years. If Fonte plays half as well as Claus, I'd say we'd done a great deal.

Wes Tender Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 but Svensson was better;) Debateable. They brought different things to the defence. Claus was the more skillful defender in terms of footballing ability. Svensson was the grittier, braver defender of the two. Together, they complemented each other. I agree that Jaidi and Fonte will be formidable together and Fonte is definitely a cut above Trottman.
NickG Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 Claus started off very well, but always felt he needed a leader (Richards/Svensson) type to perform, think Svensson would have looked good whoever he partnered.
david in sweden Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 but Svensson was better;) Yes -but they played different roles - didn't they? I also thought of MS as the first ball-winner and Claus doing more of a back-up sweeping role but they were a great combination.
BotleySaint Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 Those were the glory days, when we had the second best defence in the premier league going into Christmas in 4th place. Or something like that

david in sweden Posted 20 January, 2010 Share Posted 20 January, 2010 Claus started off very well, but always felt he needed a leader (Richards/Svensson) type to perform, think Svensson would have looked good whoever he partnered. I agree with that..and about M. Svensson, too But Claus was moved around a lot, and unlike Svensson, didn't have a fixed role for a long time. In Claus' first season (1996-97) DJ used him as left back.!..after which he got the no.6 shirt when Monkou was CH. He had the CH position after Monkou went and Richards arrived. He had an off spell and some injuries and El Khalej came in for a while..then reverted to 5 with Richards. After Deano's departure, Strachan bought in Paul Willaims at 5... and Claus went to 6 (again) it was only after Michael Svensson signed that Claus got the CH spot again and MS took the more agressive role and wore 6. All things considered (and his personal problems aside ) he was a good club man and generally quite dependable.
