Barry the Badger Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 I would just like to say how refreshing it is since getting Lambert to finally feel like we might take advantage of free kicks around the box (and further). When was the last time a saints player scored more than 5 free kicks in a season? I remember Bale coming close a lot but don't remember him scoring that many for us before he went to Spurs. Was it Le Tiss or am I missing somebody.
BadgerBadger Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 Remember when Bale and Rudi had a spat over who would take a free kick - Bale won and Rudi sulked, Bale scored a few crackers when he got his range
Liquidshokk Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 It almost feels like a certainty that the ball will go in the net when he is 30 yards or closer to goal. Not many players I've felt that with before.
The9 Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 How many free-kicks did Beattie get in his scoring spell(s) ?

richardc Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 I did not understand why James took all bar two of the free kicks on Saturday - nothing came of any of them - Lambert was also reluctant to take the last one - he walked away at one stage then it looked like pardew or someone told him to take it
Liquidshokk Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 You are of course wrong to think that... Why, considering he's banged nearly every one in from that range so far?!
ericofarabia Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 Why, considering he's banged nearly every one in from that range so far?! Plus 3 or 4 (maybe more even) that have hit the woodwork.
Saint_clark Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 To be fair, I can also remember 3 or 4 that he has missed - a couple by a fair way as well.
Liquidshokk Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 ok ok but "to be fair" lets admit when they go in they are pretty amazing
st alex Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 I thought Bale scored about half a dozen for us before he left, as well coming very close numerous times.
Matthew Le God Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 I remember Bale coming close a lot but don't remember him scoring that many for us before he went to Spurs. Bale got 5 goals in 40 league games for Saints in his only season for Saints 2006/07. 4 out of the 5 were free kicks. Free kicks against Derby, Coventry, Hull and Norwich. Open play goal against Sunderland. He also got very close to scoring with many other free kicks.
Junior Mullet Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 Bale was a very classy free kick taker. I recall seeing him up close several times for the U.18's and he always got such curle on the ball. Lambo combines great power with precision and some curle - a mix that is absolutely deadly at this level. We have had some very good free-kick takers over the years. Arizona Posted 18 January, 2010 Share Posted 18 January, 2010 Saeijs, Vignal and Skacel all scored an absolute belter of a free kick, but for some reason never used to take them regularly and only scored once each. Remember Watford away last season, Saeijs scored that fantastic effort, then we got another free kick in the same spot and Surman put it in the car park. Odd. Higgy took a couple in our first season in the CCC. Anders knocked the Argies out of the World Cup from 30 yards but I don't remember him ever taking one for Saints. Not sure if Beatts ever got five in a season, but he did score one which got Hoddle sacked, which has to be worth at least 4 goals on it's own. Don't remember Vignal scoring a belter...only a floated free kick which richard stearman glanced into his own net in fa cup. Beattie's against spurs was quality, remember him scoring a peach of a free kick at stamford bridge aswell.
