Saintmike666 Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 As the thread title says really, I feel that people really need to get over the ‘we used to be a premiership club only a few years back so we should be walking this league’ attitude and realise that we are now (because of a series of circumstances) a bottom 5 championship club. I’m not trying to sound depressing, just realistic. We need to face facts, and obviously there are a lot of people on this forum that clearly are not. People that are already turning on the players and coaching staff, people that for some reason seem to feel we should be further up the table then we are. I mean, what do you expect? We have a team of kids for christ sake. To those people I say – Yes its sad to see our once great club in the mess its in but get over it, we are in a sh*tty situation and there’s nothing we can do about it now except ride out the storm, there’s no good whining about it, we just need to get behind what is left of our football club and support it. If we can get through this season and finish 21st then we can go from there.
SoccerMom Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 I'd prefer to be just a little bit further up the table just because I don't want all those in their first seasons to feel that the best they can do is just scrape through - they are better than that. But not too much further up, as I don't want to see the squad decimated (or, worst, "quintimated" or "quartimated") by the vultures looking for bargains like John Bostock. But I agree with the sentiment - this year is about consolidating. If we finish mid-table we will have lost a few. So what? So long as they keep learning, don't burn out and keep having the confidence that they can achieve.

That is kind of my original point. god...the other day us doom mongers were told "anyone can beat anyone in this league"... now this is not the case.. bristol city got to the play off final last season with litterally the same team that failed to win league 1 the year before.. Who actually rated Hull when we (a burley team) thrashed hull 4-0 at SMS...who thought stoke were a good team last xmas, we beat them too.. dont talk crap

I get your original point – you are acknowledging that you’ve become content with failure! You are suggesting that we should be pleased / at ease to finish below teams like Preston, Bristol City, Charlton, Swansea, Coventry, Burnley, Sheff Weds, Doncaster, Blackpool, Norwich, Palace, Plymouth, Forest and Barnsley. All these teams listed (and a few more in the CCC) have similar constraints to us, but perform better (in the main) – I can’t accept the notion ‘we are struggling financially therefore we must accept rubbish’. Not at all sir. In my opinion finishing 21st with our current team shouldn’t be considered a failure at all; in fact I would consider it a huge success. Then hopefully with financial restraints beginning to lift we can move on from there.

I see you have been brainwashed too many of them are not even teenagers..we still have john (who scored oodles last season) rudi killer davis perry wotton euell dyer im just saying, teams who fail to win league 1 can do and have done VERY WELL in this league.. does that mean I expect promotion? NO does that mean I think this bunch of players are capable to do better than they are...DEFINATELY YES That’s 8 names from a squad that consists of about 30, and most on that list are ever incredibly overrated or won’t even play a game for saints this season. I accept Killer, Davis and John as good points, but you have only managed to prove that we are indeed a squad that consists mainly of youngsters, bravo ;D. Saintmike666 Posted 18 September, 2008 Author Share Posted 18 September, 2008 how many players do we have then if you think tyhe squad is 30 in number? - Check the OS, I think you find the squad is exactly 30 in number. so what about younsters...palace had a team with FAR younger players than us (one was 16) and who dont have the level of academy we have almost, ALMOST made the playoffs...maybe we will, but the signs are not good at all... by saying you would be happy with 21st is already admitting we are proper shiiite I, on the other hand believe the players to be a bit better and are capable of finishing higher than 21st... now, who is the negative one? I see you have been brainwashed too many of them are not even teenagers..we still have john (who scored oodles last season) rudi Hasnt played all season and questionable if he will. Well known fact that he will be sold to the first bidder killer Questionable how many games he will play and if having someone in the squad who plays one week and then doesnt play for 2 weeks is unsettling for the team or not davis perry wotton euell dyer is 21, hardly a full blown adult is he? And I think his recent antics have shown him to be more of a child than most of our squad! im just saying, teams who fail to win league 1 can do and have done VERY WELL in this league.. does that mean I expect promotion? NO does that mean I think this bunch of players are capable to do better than they are...DEFINATELY YES Dont mean to pick sides in this arguement but wanted to make a point... In my eyes, that leaves us with 3 outfield players who are capable for regular selection. You need the right mix of youth and experience and I am not convinced we have anywhere near enough experience to do very well this season. All IMO of course

Quite, nor would a expect anyone to be 'happy' about it, just to accept it and get behind the team rather then turning on them. I'm not trying to be negitive at all, I dont take joy in seeing saints in the state they are in, but what exactly can we do about it? Nothing is the answer. Like I said in my original post we need to ride out the storm and move on from there.
stevegrant Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 I'd be content with finishing 19th or above this season. That would represent progress - albeit very slight - but given the circumstances would be a reasonable achievement.

Saintmike666 Posted 18 September, 2008 Author Share Posted 18 September, 2008 (edited) Killer, John, Perry, Davis and Wotton will all be regulars this season. I fear that killer will be in and out of the team far to often to be considered a regular (Hope I'm wrong of course). I cant really understand why John hasn't be used more often this season already (hefty apperance fee maybe, and if so then that wont change this season). Davis, Wotton and Perry though could very well be key. Also taking into account that Rudi and Euell will probably very rarely play thats 3 'older' first team regulars. Saint_clark Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 so, half the team then....add the possibilty of rudi, euell too I doubt those two will play at all, but yes it is half the team. So we can stop all this rubbish about "team full of kids" right away - not forgetting of course, that Surman is 21 and Gillett is 23. I'm sure they don't consider themselves to be kids. I actually think Wotton is a hell of a lot better than we thought (much like Holmes) - he seemed to run the show last night.

saints_is_the_south Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 As said in a previous thread if someone was to offer me 21st come 5pm on the 3rd May 09 after the game at Forest I'd take it.
Ponty Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 I don't mind 21st but I'd like it to be on the back of a run of wins so we finish the season on a high that gives us all a bit of confidence for next year, including the team. Win one, lose one, draw one, lose one all season does not really do it for me.

offix Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 This is always a "heart versus mind" thing; The heart says; I want promotion to the Prem, either through the play-offs or automatic. Anything less is not acceptable. The mind looks at reality, sees the obstacles facing us and says; The heart is not being realistic - just surviving would be an achievement with the current set-up. ivangolac Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 Staying up is the only priority this season We just need to survive in this league for as long as it takes for someone (anyone) to come in the money to save us. I don't care how we do it and personally i think we'll be ok this season . I have a feeling it will all click pretty soon and someone is in for a drubbing . Hopefully Barnsley on saturday ..... Arizona Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 I'd hope for better, but with this squad, 21st really would be a good finishing position this season. Our target this season has to be to avoid relegation. I really am not expecting anything more than a brave fight against the drop.
St Paul Posted 18 September, 2008 Share Posted 18 September, 2008 If Leon Crouch was still Chairman would certain people be pleased with the performances, would they except a season of struggle and likely relegation. No they would be howling and moaning and calling for Lowe's return. If Lawrie Mac had been involved with the appointment of an unknown, unteseted Dutchman, would they be calling for him to be given time? No they would they be trying to claim he was appointed to feather his sons nest, whilst running down and slagging off the great man.
