Saint_clark Posted 31 January, 2010 Share Posted 31 January, 2010 Funny. The few games before he got injured most people on here were saying how they thought he was massively overrated....
chivvy1664 Posted 31 January, 2010 Author Share Posted 31 January, 2010 I havent seen him play but other do seem to rate him. What makes him better than James/Wotton etc
Andy_Porter Posted 31 January, 2010 Share Posted 31 January, 2010 I don't think he's all that but we are missing his presence, wouldn't be such a problem if Lloyd James didn't pick up his injury. Wotton just isn't good enough.
St Chalet Posted 31 January, 2010 Share Posted 31 January, 2010 If we lose Lambert it is season over. Hammond is missed but Rickie is irreplaceable in current squad.
Tony F Posted 31 January, 2010 Share Posted 31 January, 2010 I havent seen him play but other do seem to rate him. What makes him better than James/Wotton etc He is more reliable than James - less excitable perhaps - more cultured than Wotton. His passing and positional sense are better than both
St Landrew Posted 31 January, 2010 Share Posted 31 January, 2010 Is he the only player that we truly have no cover for? No. Wotton covers for him, but he's obviously not as good. If he was, Hammond and he would be rotated. As I mentioned in another thread, we slightly struggle without Hammond, but you can't have a player, the quality of Hammond, playing in the reserves, or sat on the bench, waiting for Hammond to be injured or rested. Tony F Posted 31 January, 2010 Share Posted 31 January, 2010 If we lose Lambert it is season over. Hammond is missed but Rickie is irreplaceable in current squad. Although Ricky would obviously be a real loss I would be optimistic that Papa and Barnard would be able to continue leading our attack and they, with others like Adam, as well as Puncheon, would provide enough goalscoring threat to tide us over. This would not have been the case before Christmas. Papa was not ready (in my view) until recently for such a role and Barnard is a new arrival, of course. I think that the boss may well rest Ricky soon - maybe even as soon as Exeter. Probably keep him on the bench "just in case", but I think he is minded to make the bold move not to start him sometime soon, in preparation for inevitable fixture congestion later on. Andy_Porter Posted 31 January, 2010 Share Posted 31 January, 2010 It's a shame Pardew didn't give Gillett a chance to impress in midfield yesterday. I'd rather have him there than Wotton and he has played plenty of times with Schneiderlin.
wild-saint Posted 31 January, 2010 Share Posted 31 January, 2010 With Hammond out of the side we miss .... 1) Mobility - The ability to win the lose ball in midfield 2) Agression - The ability to boss the midfield with hard tackles and restricting the oppositions playmaker to pass through midfield 3) When the ball is picked up or won in midfield the ability to play simple passes to the feet of our creative players. Wotton offer a fierce (albeit Late) tackle but significantly lacks ppoints 1 & 3 which essentially means are creative flair is restricted IMO

Tartarus112 Posted 1 February, 2010 Share Posted 1 February, 2010 His passing and positional sense are better than both You clearly have never seen Hammond play if you think he passes the ball better than Lloyd James. Hammond's not bad but James shows the sort of class we've come to expect when it comes to our academy players. Ability and sight to play good passes. Positional sense is roughly the same maybe James being better. Hammond does seem to add some bite to midfield which we need at this level. Should be sold before we get anywhere near the premiership though as his lack of pace and talent will let him down. Average league 1 player imo. Saint Fan CaM Posted 1 February, 2010 Share Posted 1 February, 2010 If we lose Lambert it is season over. Hammond is missed but Rickie is irreplaceable in current squad. He may be irreplaceable in the sense we have no other target man like him, however with Waigo, Barnard and Connolly on call, not to mention Lallana, Antonio AND now Puncheon, I think that our goal threat would not be seriously under threat if Rickie was out for a spell. Might even be better if we were at full strength in the midfield. As a last thought, I would suggest you check out who has scored the goals in the last 10 games...I think you will see that Rickie is far from the only goal scorer. ericofarabia Posted 1 February, 2010 Share Posted 1 February, 2010 I had him down as a definite 'Mister', but maybe his time at Brighton got to him Playing wise, yes he has been missed. He has the workrate and tenacity to breakdown attacks, and is quite then good at distrubuting the ball as well. He also has the ability to ghost into positions in the penalty area and could have had a lot more goals to his credit. Hurry back Hamster.

Sorry, got to disagree with you there Eric, although he put in a stirling effort in the forum match, I really don't think our Hamster is adequate emergency cover for Hammond. In fact, I'd go so far as to say that I think Wotton is probably a better back up for him (just) Don't think we would have noticed missing Hammond quite so much if we hadn't lost James as well. I think we really struggle with a midfield of two wide men and Wotton + 1 in midfield. With both out then we'd probably be better with Lallana playing "in the hole" behind Lambert in a 5 man midfield.
