Legod Third Coming Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 If we can generate the same or even similar levels of passion as we created yesterday for our remaining home matches, teams in this league will not know what the feck has hit them. Yesterday you could see how shaky it made a Premiership side to have a wall of noise from the off and to be bood every time they touched the ball. I know they are supposed to be professional footballers and immune to such things. They're not - they can be intimidated as easily as the next man. So let's do it. surrey1saint Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 I completely agree, but how do you generate that support all around the ground, particularly the Chapel?

View From The Top Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 (edited) Yes I know, but it won't for the next home game I feel! It won't. What was noticeable yesterday was the lack of kids. I go with a couple of 7yo nippers (they went yesterday) but the other families that are usually around us were absent. SFC Forever Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 I am a regular in the Chapel and feel it only needs a few reguler leaders to answer the calls from the Northam etc. If we can keep filling the ground the rest should look after itself. The whole ground rocked and when it starts rocking like that it is infectious.

Presumably, they'll go back to a much more comfortable 16,000 odd supporters. Bestest suppporters™, of course.
sadoldgit Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 Unfortunately it is the nature opposition that generated that atmosphere. It is hard to see people geting so worked up by a mid week, mid winter game against the likes of Tranmere.

It does my head in when people complain there is no atmopshere but sit on their hands. Yesterday we had some nutters near us starting all the chanting and I made bloody sure I joined in every time. It only takes a few of us to be prepared to give it a go and it catches on...

That's a big if and it's nothing to do with the ground/stands/opening blocks/areas of support etc. Its recognising we have a hard core fan base of c.18k and accepting that others won't turn up unless they are big games or we have a sniff of success. I seriously doubt we will get in excess of an average of 20k for the rest of the season and that's including the away support Leeds and Charlton will bring with them. I saw to many there yesterday who turned up for the occassion as oppose to regular supporters but at least thanks to ticketing policy they will have to attend a run of the mill league game but diluted over the rest of season I doubt we will see much effect except for the Leeds game. Numbers generate atmosphere and not number of empty seats so how do you maintain that level of support for the rest of the season with our usual support. In two words - you don't. LostBoys Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 I thought the atmosphere was great 'paye up pompey' was a bit repititious but 'harrys got your money' was pure class if we can maintain support anywhere near that it will be brilliant. I wont post anymore as numpty c has just posted - fortunately he is on my ignore list and I only have to read his drivel when someone else quotes it
stevegrant Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 To achieve the effect desired, it is essential to re-open Blocks 1-3. All well and good against the sides who will bring decent away followings like Leeds, but it'll be a bit pointless giving 100 Hartlepool fans a load of abuse

Saints foreva Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 One thing that I thought was brilliant yesterday was that St Marys had something similar to the Dell spirit, after the first goal it seemed like the majority of the crowd got on their feet to just try and give the lads some encouragement, a massive chant of come on you reds after their first goal completely drowned out the skates cheering. I would love if we could get that type of passion and atmosphere in our league games, but I can't see is as against Walsall I suspect we will go back to the usual 20,000. Pay up Pompey is good for a laugh but counterprouductive to getting behind your own team.
Trumush Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 If we can keep a sniff of the play offs going we will attract 20K plus crowds. If it quickly becomes totally impossible attendance will plateau at 17-18k,apart from the visit of the top teams.
doddisalegend Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 It was the oppostion yesterday that caused the atmosphere, people won't get that worked up by Trannmere or Stockport the feeling is just not there. I was sat in the kingsland yesterday (I normally sit in the chapel) and some of the people sat near me reckoned they normaly sat in the Northam but couldn't get seats there, they started most of the songs and chants and eveyone else joinned in. So the thing to do is split the Northam gang into groups and placing them strategically all over St Mary's to get everyone going:D.
Dr Who? Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 you will never create anything near like yesterday. A derby match is second to none. You just cannot get that worked up against Stockport at home. It is what makes a derby match so special.
samoakley Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 I only make 10-12 games a season since my season ticket days in the 1st few seasons at SMS and saturday was by far the best atsompshere i have heard at St Marys, If we can create anything like that for are remaining games i think it will be fantastic for the fans and players, it might help us make the playoffs but to be honest, if it looks as so were get the playoffs people will come and make noise. Yeah totally agree and unfortunately probably sounded as though the Skates were singing their 'Play up' version very loudly as I don't think 'Pay' would have come across clearly on the TV. Personally, I sang '**** off Pompey' everytime that song came up!
SFC Forever Posted 14 February, 2010 Share Posted 14 February, 2010 The one thing that nobody has taken into account is the team. If the team keeps some of the momentum going that was showed the support will follow. As the performances continue the crowds will swell and so will the noise.
