Police/steward intimidation*

*Sorry, I meant incitement...

There was absolutely nothing brewing/mentioned during the game until they all lined up down the front and the announcements started. Then people ran on the pitch, and whilst the stewards tried to stop them the coppers LITERALLY didn't move an inch.

ahhh..he we go, the police are to blame for other peoples actions..

Of course the police aren't fully to blame, but once again you are showing why it is difficult to comment on scenarios you did not witness. There was NO tension at all in the air until they all lined up and the tannoy announcer started spouting off every 2 minutes.

again...look around the country, there has been a shapr rise in crowd trouble lately..especially in the lower leagues..

at times when players are being attacked and even jumping into the stands to avoid being battered...

now tell me the police are not right to take a precaution..to show they are there at the end...

Absolutely, if they think there is a threat to the players/staff on the pitch they should take action.

So why stand there and watch calmly as people sprint past them towards the tunnel?

Leading on from this, I saw only one person on the pitch who looked older than 16...
Over excited youngsters, to suggest they should be arrested is way over the top, they thought it was funny, everyone else thought it was sh*t, no way should they be banned though, slapped wrist and don't do it again would be fine.

I completely agree I wasn't suggesting at all that anyone be arrested or banned, I just cannot understand why we had 1st line of defence stewards scrabbling around with the police behind them (on the pitch, I might add) not moving a muscle as people legged it past them.

Which is what they'll get I'd hazard a guess.

The Police are specifically instructed not to go on the pitch unless in an emergency!

Completely naive thread from someone that knows nothing and just wants to blame the police for a mindless few that are stupid enough to break the ground rules. You would have to be a complete moron not to know it's an offence to go on the pitch which risks ejection from the ground, banning or arrest. The police are only there to act when requested to do so by the stewards.

I was at the game and when the handful of idiots went on the pitch all you could hear was 20000 plus fans calling them ******s!!

I think the majority let them know what they thought of them!

Is it so hard to understand what I am saying?

Yes, the people who went on the pitch are to blame - they looked like a bunch of c*nts.

I am just asking why the police were there if they weren't going to try and stop people from running on the pitch, as IMO all the "preventative measures" were a massive contributing factor to the tension at the end anyway.

Lots of hypocrites in the northam today.

Booing the tanoy announcement about not going on the pitch, singing "on the pitch" and then calling the lads that went on the pitch w4nkers.

Make your minds up.

You have been told it is not for the police to take action when fans go on the pitch, that is for the stewards, that is their role....IS THAT DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND?

....contributing factor to the tension..... for gods sake behave, this was an end of season kick about with nothing riding on the outcome, the only tension was in deciding whether to have a pie or a pint at halftime or both, some people just have to have someone else to blame!!!

Did you not hear all the boos and whistles when the announcements were made then? Do you not think that the atmosphere got just a wee bit more hostile after that?

I just don't understand the point of having the police there if they aren't allowed to act. They certainly didn't put people off running on the pitch.

if anybody sees highlights of Grimbsy vs Burton look very closely. After Burton take the lead a fan runs on the pitch, pushes the Grimbsy keeper and then taunts the home fans about 20 yards from the police who stand there and do nothing. The stewards eventually turn up about 30 seconds later to tackle the bloke at the coppers feet, who still dont bat an eyelid. Stupid

This is exactly what I mean. If they are there to prevent trouble, why oh why did they stand 5-10 yards on the pitch and let people run past them?

Maybe they were fake/wooden policemen....lots of clubs are using them to save £'s

What do you want the police to do? shoot or taser 12 year olds?

Get a grip

They're breaking the law, they can grab hold of them and pull them to the ground - which I might add is exactly what the stewards did, with no qualms at all.

I think people just didn't like being spoken to like they were 5 year olds.

The announcement was way over the top and to do it 3 times was incitement.

I take it you weren't there? It was patronising to the extreme and completely unnecessary, everyone was practically asleep until he started all that.

Well... I do live in a different country.

I don't care how he said it. To call a standard announcement (albeit said 3 times) and stewards and police taking up a position to do a job incitement is beyond laughable.

If I'm in a kebab shop at 3am and there's a few cops outside on the beat, is their presence incitement for me to punch some guy or throw something throw a window? Or do I have to wait until they tell me not to do that before it becomes incitement?

That would depend on whether you are in Southern Ireland or Northern Ireland and whether you are Protestant or Catholic.;)

Everyone around me just found it funny at the booing and jeering of the announcement, and when the idiots did try to get on the pitch we were just ****ing ourselves with laughter at the rugby tackles by the stewards, and especially the tw*t that lost his shoe after trying to look so cool. All it was was a bit of end of season entertainment for the masses.

Everybody breaks the law all the time......if the police just go round pulling ppl to the floor just for breaking the law the country would go into melt down.

get a grip and stop being such a grass and baby

I didn't find the repetition of the tannoy announcement inciting as I have a mental age greater than 6.

I did however feel the announcement totally detracted from the game and ruined the atmosphere. Therefore, I booed the tannoy and called the pitch invaders "w@nkers".

Perhaps they didn't think there was any threat. perhaps they have more sense than you, or than you give them credit for?
