Turkish Posted 23 July, 2010 Share Posted 23 July, 2010 We all seem to be ITK when it comes to who we want to sign, the 'we should sign Neil Danns' bandwagon seems to grow by the second, how many of you lot have actually seen him play? I've only seen him a couple of times and he looks decent but dont know enough about him to to say if he is going to be a great signing or not. Same could be said for Fonte & Rickie Lambert, i dont think i'd ever seen Fonte play when he joined us and Lambert once, against us in the cup. Butterfield on the other hand i know a bit about and have seen him on numerous occasions over the years and know he is a good, solid but unspectacular pro and a very good signing. I just wonder how often the we should sign, him, him and him, bandwagon is based on knowledge of the player or speculation and hearsay.

Turkish Posted 23 July, 2010 Author Share Posted 23 July, 2010 How good is he on FM? Exactly, i cant believe i have seen posts on here stating that, someone once even put a players FM stats on here that we were linked with, embarassing.

The stats on CM are supplied by fans of each club so they can provide a very rough idea of a players attitributes. Who those specific fans are and how good their `eye' is for a player I'm not sure. benjii Posted 23 July, 2010 Share Posted 23 July, 2010 Generally, I know naff all about most players at this level. I did spend a couple of years in Nottingham though and used to go to matches now and again so I have an opinion on Tyson which is possibly more informed than the average opinion, having watched him in the flesh several times. I am also willing to give a player extra hype if they have a good sounding name.

Some fans of other clubs base their views of Saints players they might buy on what they are like on FM. For example a Colchester fan deciding if Lloyd James is any good. So basically using my view to formulate an opinion.

Plus i read a little while back that a few top clubs actually half use FM ratings as an estimate because they are formulated by researchers that watch the said players week in week out. Matthew Le God Posted 23 July, 2010 Share Posted 23 July, 2010 Here is just one of many real world examples... http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news/Everton-using-Football-Manager-computer-game-article33798.html Yes, it is using scouts that are fans of the clubs. In some ways it can be better, I see more Saints game than any club scout. But it must be the largest scouting network in the world and as an initial scouting tool I think is worth using. Obviously you follow it up by sending an actual scout to view the player.

A Chelsea coach came out and said that he looks up stats on there as it's so accurately and painstakingly worked out with the opta stats etc. - I'm trying to find the link on that. It'd be an awful manager who made a signing based on FM stats alone. It would be a worse manager who dismisses the potential of the FM database althogether. It won't tell you how good a player actually is, but it will help identify targets, and get an impression of their relative stats (i.e. if FM says they have a pace of 19 and a tackle of 2, you should have a good idea what sort of player you're looking at.). Dismissing it outright is nothing short of stupid.

Looking at the hidden values for current ability and potential ability rating out of 200 in the database editor gives a clue as to how good they are and will be. Indeed, however, you have given Pulis a potential ablity of 105... with injury proneness of only 10... (Surely that should be closer to PA 85 IP 20?) NickG Posted 23 July, 2010 Share Posted 23 July, 2010 think good source of info is reading other teams fans forums, they can be quite critical (not like on here!) of players leaving or linked with other clubs. Good examples of their views were how disappointed they were to lose Lambert, Fonte and Butterfield
