martel Posted 6 August, 2010 Share Posted 6 August, 2010 Well another season starts and I will of course be watching and reading as to how Saints fair, I do love it here in South Florida; but I do miss having a beer with friends before a game and then watching a game at St Mary's. I actually went to my first live Baseball game last night, I kid you not I would rather paint a wall and watch it dry, the game is boring beyond belief, I am no cricket fan, however, it leaves Baseball for dead. Their is no atmosphere, no singing or chanting, just some pillock playing a a couple of bars on a hammond organ now and then; their is talk of Fort Lauderdale putting an MLS team together, that would be good and well supported because of the amount of South American, Haitian and jamacain residents that live here, however, it will never match my team, THE SAINTS. RedAndWhite91 Posted 6 August, 2010 Share Posted 6 August, 2010 I'd love to live in the States when I'm older, I love it there, but I don't know how I would cope with being that far away from Southampton and the Saints!
iansums Posted 6 August, 2010 Share Posted 6 August, 2010 I also love going to the States. I'll be in Florida in a few days for couple of weeks. I often think how I'd love to live there but then think how much I hate American sports.

corky morris Posted 6 August, 2010 Share Posted 6 August, 2010 Hi Martel. I have a house in Kissimmee & will be over next week for a couple of weeks & not using my season tickets. Me & the lads are taking trip over to Tampa to see the Rowdies play. I know its a bit of a trek & Miami maybe closer, but you should think about watching a bit of the local 'soccer'? Really looking forward to tomorrow!

martel Posted 6 August, 2010 Author Share Posted 6 August, 2010 Orlando, then on the Gulf Coast. This is turning into Trip Advisor. Gulf coast is good, Sanibel Island, Fort Meyers and Naples, good time of year in terms of the snow birds have gone home, however, it is rainy season and when the sun is out really hot right now. Rebel Posted 6 August, 2010 Share Posted 6 August, 2010 but its still full of Americans! and isn't Florida a Republican state with a Bush as governor - so that means its full of redneck americans - not the West Coast or New England style americans we're used to seeing over here! the first time you actually meet an average american it's quite a shock - insular, fat, badly dressed, right wing - but mostly depressing as you realise these people dominate the most powerful nation in the world! RedAndWhite91 Posted 6 August, 2010 Share Posted 6 August, 2010 In 2007 we drove from Kissimmee down to Tampa , then to Naples, then across the Everglades into Fort Lauderdale/Miami, was excellent. How difficult is it to get all the documentation needed to move to the States, like the green card and all that?

Sorry, but completely wrong, redneck states are the real south, like Georgia, north and south carolina etc, Bush is no longer governer, it is Charlie Crist who was a republican but is going to run for senate on a independent ticket, as for being insular, fat, badly dressed and right wing then three out of four is not bad, but the house and presidency is now in Democratic control which is actually more in line with the tories, which makes the republicans slightly right of Adolf Hitler. In short not easy, your best way is to start a company over here and come in on an investment visa, as I did, however, my status is now changing as I am married to an American, therefore I have been approved for a green card, I just have to pay them another $1,000.00 to finalize it all. Saint George Posted 6 August, 2010 Share Posted 6 August, 2010 You seem to me to be the typical kind of immigrant that people tend to despise around the world, no mater where it is....You've planted your self in another country and all you seem to be doing is ***** about the Country you've moved to...I'm guessing you have a little insular circle of expats, you clearly consider yourself somewhat superior and spend most of your time looking down your nose at the locals. Why are you still here?...Why don't you go back to the UK where you'll have little chance of having to breath the same air some backward swamp dwelling Redneck WHO DAT! View From The Top Posted 6 August, 2010 Share Posted 6 August, 2010 I use to live and work in Florida and I must admit to finding it one of the most tedious places on earth with nothing to offer bar sunshine and make believe "entertainment". I have no desire to ever return (although the kids will demand it at some stage). That said, the folk, whilst often thick as a skate, were dead nice. Also, when there, I missed the Saints like crazy. Prehaps it's easier this day and age with this interweb thingy.

Been all over, admittedly not for a good few years, and prefer West to East but prefer West Coast Canada to both! Wife wants to do Napa Valley (without the kids) which I fancy. One of my teaching team is off to Denver on Tuesday, then up to Yellowstone and then upto the Black Hills. Now that I'd love to do! It would be interesting to watch a match in Denver as I'd be interested to see how the ball behaves at 1mile high.

Redondo Saint Posted 6 August, 2010 Share Posted 6 August, 2010 There is no 'average American' in my opinion - much the same as there is no average Brit. I miss Hampshire and footy, but for the time being CA is where I live and very much enjoy. Plenty of Brit and American friends and all good banter. You make it want you want. I am presuming that your comment is aimed at me, if so you are wrong, I much prefer here to any other country I have lived in or visited, most of my friends are in fact American and all of the ones I do business with as well, my attitude has always been "when in Rome" so on just about every count you are wrong, now I have not done this much explaining in years so before you judge me if your comment was aimed at me then I strongly suggest you take the time and trouble to get to know me. corky morris Posted 6 August, 2010 Share Posted 6 August, 2010 VFTP loves Italy - And that place certainly has its issues!!! I loved Portland Oregan when I visited. I worked in the US for 15 months & loved every minute of it. Without doubt it has major issues, but there is a huge amount of beauty all over the place. Oregan, California, Minnesota & yes even Florida & Michigan. I will be in Anna Maria Island for a week & that is ace!!!

I'm going to Bonita Springs, just north of Naples. It always makes me smile when people slate an entire nation. Yes, some yanks are over the top but most are no different to us. I miss the away trips more. Totton station at 7am on a Sat morning with a bag of beer - couldn't beat it. USA is a load of different countries in one really. Indiana is the size of England. The big difference is there are only about 6 million people living here. There is so much more space and less conjestion. I bet you guys (that American enough for you?) living in FL, CA & NYC can't say the same... That's why it's funny where I hear people say things like 'all Americans are fat and rude' - that is such a myth. Round here they are all pretty friendly. An English accent goes a long way when you live in a non-tourist area. I disagree about baseball. I've got into it & watch the Cincinnati Reds most days on TV. Once you realise that the pitcher and catcher signal to each for the type of pitch and that there is WAY more to it than the pitcher just 'chucking it as hard as he can into the strike zone' then it becomes way more watchable. FL is seen as the least passionate baseball State - not surprised you didn't enjoy it down there too much. With Saints Player, FSC, FSC Plus & ESPN I get a good fix of English footy. Just watching Norwich v Watford now. Got more than half an eye on the Cubs v Reds game though. I'm sure one thing all of us ex-pat USA Saints can agree on is GET BACK IN THE PREM SAINTS. That way we'll see 80% of their games either live on or delay. Now I don't live in Southampton I'd love the chance to be an armchair supporter.... Should def sort out a good SFC Fans in the USA p*ss-up sometime. Make mine a (case of) Miller High Life. I'll suggest the venue as somewhere easy to get to - like Indiana :-)
the mick channon windmill Posted 7 August, 2010 Share Posted 7 August, 2010 I'm sure most people who used to live in Southampton and grew up watching saints play will be wishing they were there today. I moved to Australia around 7 years ago and whilst it is a great place to live every saturday during the football season is torture. It's not just the football, it's the whole buzz of the day i miss, meeting up with mates having a beer, watching the game then a few more beers either celebrating or drowning the sorrows. The away trips are something i really miss. Without doubt being away from saints is very hard, is it enough to make me give up my life here and move back to Southampton...... tempting but not at the moment. Moved to Aus 7 years ago also. I miss the buzz from matchdays so much, but there's no way I can give up this lifestyle permanently. Having said that...have converted the missus already ( a trip to wembley helped!) and when the youngest kid finishes school in 3 years we're gonna risk a year back in the UK and watch every match in the Premiership with the mighty Saints! (Of course they will be there!)
