dubai_phil Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 As we were leaving the ground Saturday, Solent reported their 5Live colleagues as stating the manager would be appointed by mid week and would have a WoW factor that would show the fans that NC knew what he was doing. IMHO this statement led to the (great fun) wild speculation on here during the week, but MORE importantly, it undermined the fans confidence in Nigel Adkins being appointed. Adkins appears to be a damned fine manager and a good signing for the club, playing a style we all want to see and experience of getting out of this League. He cannot be deemed to be a WoW factor, and that has caused many of us to be disappointed or even underwhelmed. At a time when we need to get the pressure and negativity off the players and manager at SMS, I believe Solent set us up and gave us false expectations which will simply ADD to the pressure on the new man. They commented in good faith but they were WRONG to do so, the information was clearly WRONG and they need to apologise when the Commentary Team kick off the game on Saturday. WOW factor could have been Keegan, O'Neil etc, who is to say they were not interviewed, who is to say that NC wanted them above AD but couldnt agree terms etc.

WOW factor could have been Keegan, O'Neil etc, who is to say they were not interviewed, who is to say that NC wanted them above AD but couldnt agree terms etc. The point was that it was done with a "Breathless Excitement" Implying it was immense news for Saints fans. Anyway perhaps circumstances may just make this redundant as the Good ship MON comes up the Solent to the rescue

St Landrew Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 Tbh, I think the members here ought to take responsibility for their own wild speculations. Hence my joke... I'll know the club mean business if they sign Sir Alex Ferguson. Just to add though, that whether or not the media have highlighted any WOW factors or not, I'm not disappointed that Saints have decided against Nigel Adkins. He may well be a fine manager, but I'd rather have one at St Marys with a higher profile.
dubai_phil Posted 9 September, 2010 Author Share Posted 9 September, 2010 Speculation, wild or otherwise is one thing, but there is a duty of care. They were told something, they reported it. I don't have an issue with that at all. However, the recollection of the two of us in the car as we heard it was that it was done "with breathless excitement" it was implied ITK fact. I wish I could remember exactly but I think it was DM in his whispering important mode. Point is that he (or Chris/Adam) are with Solent as reporters and analysts. They make a Buzz Word statement, that was picked up by many fans listening. Simply put it set INCORRECT expectations. Their source was WRONG - as we know NC plays his cards VERY close to his chest, so it was nothing more than the ITK rubbish 90% of the posters on here have been coming up with. There are no Secretive Sources Close to The Club any longer so they were out of order. We would be asking an ITK BSer to put up or apologise - don't think they should be immune from that That is all

hasper57saint Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 FWIW I've always considered the WOW factor to be 'What's On Where', not an Americanism that should (but dosen't) mean 'A pleasant surprise'. For us up here in the 'North' (Well West Midlands/Wales) and having Villa Fans for neighbours the info from some is they are convinced that MO'N is till in the frame. I'll wait for the official announcement before sending any plaudits.

Graffito Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 No apology necessary. At worst it was hyperbole...not unknown in the media. In any case, the interview process isn't yet complete and no appointment has yet been made.
Blandford saint Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 Generally, Solent try to stick to what they know, or have been told by people involved such as the S****horpe chairman - that is, apart from Dave Merrington - he's quite happy to spout rumour as fact and keep repeating it. Personally, I would like him to retire as he has his own personal agenda and is particularly thick!

Events have caught up with the thred somewhat :-) Still, I now hold a different opinion on our Innernet Commentary team than I did at the weekend. Daren W Posted 9 September, 2010 Share Posted 9 September, 2010 So let me get this straight, the chairman sacks a manager 3 games into the season, won't tell a soul why (if it's gross misconduct or lack of ability), doesn't utter a word as to when his replacement might arrive, offers the job to Adkins but refuses to pay any compensation leaving said manager rather stuffed... and we're annoyed at Radio Solent for upping our expectations??? Jesus wept... Just what will it take for some people on here to question the chairman?

Jesus wept... Just what will it take for some people on here to question the chairman? I'm waiting to hear his explanation. I will question him when I have some facts. The past week has shown us that we should NOT believe anything we are told at the moment. I understand there may well be reasons at the moment that he is keeping quiet. I will question him IF he continues to keep quiet as I think we are owed slightly more explanation, however we didn't get it with WGS or Sturrock either. I have expressed concern at the decisions made of late. I expressed concern also at AP, I didn't rabidly rant on about it, I was just uneasy at our lack of passion and lack of ability to break teams down. Strangely I don't change my mind to match the latest fad on here, so I remain commenting only things I have seen or heard at games when it comes the the team or on things I can analyse from a distance. NC is our chairman. I don't praise him for saving the club and if you had come to the forum games you may have discovered why. I eventually reached the point where I understood Lowe's position was untenable and he needed to go. I analysed and criticised the Execs over the pre Charlton match statement and I criticised Crouch for his Churchillian style. All of which were opinions I made based on the facts as I saw them. Today I see a Photo Ban, an HP scheme and an unexplained departure of a manager. I have commented on them and criticised them, BUT I have also understood how those decisions were made. Everything else is still heresay. What do you propose Darren? We've had 5 Chairman in about 4 years, we get through them almost as fast as managers. Do YOU want the job? I think DM (I THINK it was him) misled the fans on Solent. I feel that is a disappointment. It makes me question his judgement. I don't want an analyst at a game explaining things to me when I don't have confidence that he isn't exagerating or even possibly making things up. I use his insight to try and then comment on here. If he's wrong makes what we say on here look (more) stupid (than usual). I've commented on it. For your perspective I have also posted possibly 30 or 40 times more comments on the managerial situation. I understand we interviewed a number of candidates. I believe that is pretty usual in business. How the hell can you know somebody is the best fit for our club unless you talk to them. Hell OUR opinions were divided, what sort of total MORON would believe a League1 side set up as we are would just pick the first name that 30% of this site voted for. Want me to critique NC for that? Until we know WHAT happened people who rant about the sacking are looking foolish. I am very worried about it and want to know why. Sorry I won't join you outside SMS getting people to sign petitions demanding NC tells us TODAY, NOW this Minute. Oh and FWIW I have also regularly posted that NC is only here for the money and also said how much.

dubai_phil Posted 15 September, 2010 Author Share Posted 15 September, 2010 OK I posted this after the Rochdale game. I fully realise it was nothing to do with me, BUT fair play to DM & Adam, they spent most of the first half against MKD "saying we had to move on and "apologising" fo negativity. Clearly someone pointed out something, so from my side apology noted and accpeted they are now fully behind the new man and moving forwards

One word Dave. Asturius. Thanks. On a side issue, I tweeted Solent asking when were they were going to ask those in charge at Pompey about them breaking their wage cap - no reply - I had to chuckle earlier when Adam said 'We always ask the questions when necessary'. I certainly never heard any apology and they mocked the clowns that bore about 'negativity' If you dont like their commentary why bother listening ? Lastly if you really want to moan about something then head off to square 1 consulting and email this fella http://www.square1consulting.co.uk/our-people/david-bick who is responsible for briefing local media to whats going on. I say 'briefing' but some might say its nothing more than pr spin or indeed 'crisis management'. This will the person who told anything to 5live or sky sports news as well.
