Any opinions on telecoms shares? Just curious as I'm a telecoms analyst!

I've got some in VOD. Not particularly inspiring, but safe as houses and will poodle up (they upset the lefties because of their smart use of tax loopholes - as an investor I like a board that thinks like me). Look for something smaller with more relative potential. Look for something unique. Can't remember the share off hand (it should be on my watch list but isn't mmm) but there is a company that provides satelite services for shipping. Not looked very much into it so can't really say if it's any good aside from it ringing a bell, but something like this would appeal more if you're looking for something with more risk/potential to get a tasty return.

Dune, with all your knowledge and understanding of the share market, you must be loaded. Is that why you don't work?

I do work and in 5 years time I will have made a significant amount. Started late, but with my right wing ideologies to guide me I intend to make up the ground fast.

Lolz. Ive met Algy Cluff. I'm very happy to bet that in 5 years time he will still be extremely rich, but you wont be.

CRND (my hot tip for 2011) is up 54% so far this year. Easy money.:smug:

Also check out KLG (another of my fancies) up to 7.5 from 6.6 last week when I suggested, and Namibian Resources up 100%.

BPC also primed and about to fly....

This one interests me.

https://www.share.com/cgi-bin/oicgi.exe/inet_tsc_dl2?epic=NBR

The Company's efforts to raise capital continues and in the meantime the Directors are continuing to fund the company with interest free unsecured loans which currently total £810,000. A further report on the company's progress will be announced in due course.

Lord Sheppard is the Chairman (former boss of grand met) and I can't see someone with such experience throwing good money after bad which leads me to think this could have potential and with the SP at 2.38p now could be a good time to make a modest speculative investment.

Up 57% today, 147% since i suggested.

So your current main holdings are ?

VOD, NYO, CNE.

Have very high hopes for NYO over the next few years...

Cashed in CRND. £1,000 profit will pay for a new TV. I felt it was being ramped and the Acid water discharge/mine flooding problems concerned me. It could still fly (and i think it will rise a lot more) but i had a niggling doubt so decided not to be greedy.

Why don't you start a SIPP and invest in non-isable stocks through that.

You'll be glad you did when you're old and grey.

I have a share account (non ISA), but at this stage in my 5 year plan (it sounds corny ha ha) i'm happy to seek out ISA-able shares. I don't want to pay CGT when I don't have to.

Is your target the Premier League? :o

You pay no CGT within a SIPP, and non-isable shares are usually available.

Apologies, I didn't realise that a SIPP was a pension plan. I'm sorted in that department as i'm in a very good final salary scheme and pay an additional amount per month into an AVC scheme whose fee's are payed for by my employer. Unfortunately it's rate of interest follows the base rate. Not so much of an issue at this stage, but just prior to retirement when the pot is built up it'd be a disaster at 0.5%. That said you get tax relief on contributions and in addition it's incorporated into the overal lifetime allowance. I have already spoken to a pensions adviser and once the 25% threshold is achieved (the ammount that can be taken as a tax free lump sum) i'll cease making contributions. I'm fairly happy with what should be the safe BOE base rate AVC (it should be back north of 3% in a few years time) and don't want to gamble in this area. The scheme's trustees are currently looking into offering a shares based AVC and i'll consider it if it happens and after seeking advice and looking into it myself.

NYO look to be an attractive investement with extensive tenements in the country and a very good board of directors. Ethiopia has long been one of the more progressive African countries with a Christian majority and they welcome foreign investment. With Civil war a distinct possibilty in the Ivory Coast this could be very beneficial to mining interests away from the west coast.

They are building up an impressive portfolio and IMO all the conditions are perfect for sucess.

You finally looked into it then? What price did you get in at? I have been in NYO since 9p :-)

Take a look at DPL - moderate risk but lots of potential to come in the next 12 months. Have been in since 3.5p One to hold, not to trade as when the news breaks it will fly.

Cheers

It was way back on the 1st page with Glasgow Saint. Don't worry, in at 27p will still look very, very cheap in 12 months time...

DPL - bit of a risk but with the news thats likely to come I can see 10-12p in the next 6 months or so. The hardest thing will be buying at the right time, sub 6p dive in, sub 7p is still a good deal.

Good luck

This is where i'd like to invest. I can see the SP dropping back tomorrow (next week) and 14p would be a good entry point. A lot of potential for 2011.

Yes, missed out massively, have been watching them since 6p last year. Never had the funds at the right time to get in. Still lots of potential - the market generally moves further than you imagine yet i can't bring myself to buy at the moment! Missed a good buying opportunity briefly last week.

BLVN is another, need to break 400p then they will be worth a look, have some great prospects for this year....

Good luck in whatever you do

Keep a very close eye on CLF. Both them and RRS saw their prices decline on Friday with the incumbent president of Ivory Coast talking tough in the face of increasing pressure. The EU have imposed sanctions upon the regime and even Africas leaders might amaze us all and show some continental leadership with Nigeria and Kenya applying pressure:

http://www.trust.org/alertnet/news/update-2-eu-freezes-ivory-coast-port-and-bank-assets

Without the Crisis CLF's would now be north of 150p, but despite the crisis haven't as yet declined sub 100 because it has such huge potential. I think this share could be picked up at 100p next week, maybe as low as 90p, but with limited prospect of military intervention Gbagbo could hold out for several months before he feels the pinch. Therefore it's one I think prudent to watch as there is a bargain to be had maybe sub 60p as investors panic as the situation deteriorates.

chart_image?finance_chart=1&&action=charts&average%5Fflag=M&chart%5Faction=chart%5Fdraw&chart%5Fannotations=none&chart%5Fmoving%5Faverage%5F1%5Ftype=none&chart%5Fmoving%5Faverage%5F2%5Ftype=none&chart%5Fmoving%5Faverage%5F3%5Ftype=none&chart%5Fprimary%5Fticker=LSE%3ACLF&chart%5Ftime%5Fperiod=5%5Fyear&co%5Fdimension%5Eheight=360&co%5Fdimension%5Ewidth=540&csi=109526&finance%5Fchart=1&fixed%5Fticker=1&intraday%5Fprices=1&intraday%5Ftrades=1&primary%5Fchart%5Ftype=stack%5Fline&show%5Fmin%5Fmax%5Fpoints=1&stock%5Fexchange%5Fid=1&co_dimension^width=540&hide_volume=&plot_colour=&canvas_colour=&&co_dimension^height=360&transparent_canvas=&use_transparency=

Edit: Ignore the 60p, it isn't going to drop that low and with it's assets in Burkino Faso and Siera Leone to offset the trouble in Ivory coast. Anywhere between 90p and 100p would be a very profitable entry point IMO and we could see that next week, but is as good a time as any to buy at 110p. It will have doubled to 200p by the end of the year. It's a real bargain.

From the list above have had a look through some of the different ones in the list above and there was some serious buys in NVTA towards the end of the day on Friday...

http://noventa.net/index.html

Seems they are one of these rare earth miners.

MMM, looks like the boat has been missed (for now) as up 7.89% on TSX http://tmx.quotemedia.com/quote.php?qm_symbol=nta so London should catch up first thing tomorrow and looking at the trend (3 steps forward and 2 steps back) not a good entry point.

NVTA dropped which was disapointing, but with GAM (private firm) due to re-open the Wodgina mine it explains the rushed RNS from NVTA. It's interesting that on the TSX NTA (what they call NVTA) were up 7% yesterday and 9.76% today. There was a large buy at the close in London which bodes well for tomorrow reversing the decline. The re-opening of Wodgina does however signify a positive in that they clearly expect the spot price for Tantalum to remain bullish in 2011 because otherwise operating in Australia wouldn't be feasible with higher overheads and a strong AUS $. The operation in Mozambique can run profitably at a far lower spot price because of a competitive exchange rate and paying workers wages relative to their needs.

Tantalum is an important element used in Blackberrys and iphones as well as being an important rare earth metal in optics, aeronautics and in medical equipment. With NVTA now achieving greater efficicencies and with a mines in production and other areas currently under exploratory licence the only way is up. The continued trouble in Eastern Zaire is also beneficial because under the US conflict minerals legislation they cannot export Tantalum to the USA. Of course China will have no qualms about buying on the black market and they are the largest importer, but the USA is also a large market so as long as the warlords continue fighting (and the war officially ended in 2003) the furture is rosy for responsible supplies of Tantalum.

I'm also liking the ceo and what he has done since taking over..

It seems to be a safer bet than DES as they're running out of bullets, wheras SOU have 12 months of working capital at least to fund the enlarged business. If you fancy it have a punt and on your head be it - the dilema is whether the current price is a spike as per the historical pattern. Perhaps best to risk missing the first boat because it's extremely news sensitive and based on what has happened before if you buy now you could be looking at a 30% paper loss in no time.

Not convinced that looking at gains and losses on a daily basis is a good idea, as it leads to over trading

Much of the portfolio is ahead at the moment, but I have a couple down, such as International Ferro, and to be fair when I next get some funds I am more minded to average down by buying more of them

Keep an eye on SGZ. I've had them on my watch list for a while and today they went up 23.5% (50% since i started watching them). If their planning permisision is granted (which i expect it will be after revisions) it could be a good investment.

I fancy NVTA to have a good rise any day now. There have been a lot of buys lately and news has emerged that the Wodgina mine will only be running at 50% capacity when it eventually re-opens. The Wodgina management do not want to over supply the market which makes sense as their operation is only feasible with Tantalum selling over $100/lb (it should realise $120 if they are smart). I'm also liking the fact that Roddie Fleming is the largest shareholder (15.66%) and he's no mug and the fact the ceo of NVTA is a certain Eric Kohn. His name means nothing to me except that Kohn is the same a Cowen or Cohen - a Jewish name, and you don't see many poor jews...

SGZ up 100% so far, but this is just the start. Once they get planning permission this share is going to get a lot of publicity and it will fly as small investors get behind a British mining firm in the same way they caught the DES bug. Get in now and you'll be quids in.

http://www.heraldscotland.com/business/corporate-sme/scotgold-confident-patience-will-be-rewarded-1.1080479

Scottish gold is reported to be amongst the most expensive in the world - a gram of it can cost more than five times the price of normal gold.

It is said to be easily workable because of its softness and a richer yellow colour than commercially-marketed gold.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-business-12225183

With Kate Middletons ring being made from the very rare Welsh gold I can see jewelry made of Scottish being very sought after. Even at a spot price of $700 / troy ounce the operation would be feasible, but with the spot price at $1300 / troy currently and reports of scottish gold being potentially worth $6500 / troy the market cap of £10m gives this venture a great deal of potential for shareholders that get in now while scotgold is off the radar.

Ouch. It was prime for ramping and then was the time to get in and get out. As it goes i've taken a hit from SGZ, but in Q3 i expect planning consent and a tidy return.
