Guly

Sounded like one of our better players last night from the Solent commentary.

I think his quieter form has coincided to an extent with us playing the diamond/4-1-3-2/whatever you want to call it. Whilst the "hole" might have been his favoured position in Italy, I actually think he is more effective as a centre forward in this league.

WAS at the game last night -unlike some of those quick to weigh in with their quick judgments. Guly was probably our best attacking player first half and looked dangerous 2nd half though became more inconsistent as the game went on. One of only real chances from open play (chaplow) came from a lovely guly through ball.

So what? He got a new contract and since then hasn't scored a million goals. I'm not going to let informed observation get in the way of me proclaiming him "Saganowski Mark II" and then having a little smile and a sly tug aout how clever and funny I am.

Lets jump on the back of a genuienly good footballer because he's keeping a tryhard thug like Barnard out the team ... doesn't sound like Saints fans at all!

Fuk me. Was just asking a question

Have no idea if he was good or not. Don't even have a radio to hand at the mo... Just notice that he has not scored lately.. And wanted to see what others thought

We need a 30 goal striker, simple as that. Results like Carlisle and Exeter are the sort of games that show why we need that striker. Hopefully Ricky will get back on the goal trail asap, but the lack of that striker is why we find ourselves in this position.

Eh?

Yeah too right - only winning by one goal is a disgrace. We should be winning every game by at least 4 against these silly little clubs.

Guly plays best for as a second striker tucked in behind Lambert.

He is unconvincing when played in midfield, either on the 'wing' (he clearly isn't) or 'attacking' midfield. The fact that he was a trequartista in Italy means nothing. The style of football is so different, the position arguably doesn't exist over here - it certainly isn't analogous with attacking midfielder.

It's no coincidence that he was relatively poor for his first few appearances - when played in midfield - then shone when put up front.

What is mystifying is why Adkins now seems to have moved him back to his ineffective role deeper on the pitch - especially since all the business we did during the transfer window (Chaplow, Forte, N'Guessan) strengthens those positions and makes it more rather than less competitive in midfield.

Very odd.

And what happens when that 30 goal new striker goes off the boil for a while?
He just scores the balance of his 30 goals in the remaining games......which, believe me, can make for quite a goal feast if there are only one or two games left and he is still only on 20.

My thoughts exactly.

I think Adkins has given him a chance in the deeper role but I dout we will see that again too often.

That's the problem, away goes the chances of automatic promotion. We have been missing that 30 goal striker for half the season, the games against Carlisle and Exeter show the difference a decent striker can make. You can count all the penalties, but in reality that would give you about a two goal difference if one of the other top players had taken them.

The game last night is where I would expect that 30 goal striker to sneak a win, when maybe it was not totally deserved. The games against Carlisle and Exeter led me to believe Ricky can be that 30 goal striker, because if he is not we are in the play off lottery. This does not mean that Ricky won't deliver the goods, but the fact I believe automatic promotion and his form go hand in hand.

We have really been far from convincing in recent games and I can't see the fixture pile up and away games helping us any. It's in times like this we need someone to step out of the sheite and mediocrity to give us an advantage that takes us forward.
