The meaning of Life, The Universe and Everything

Is as we all know 42.

Which is exactly how many points are now up for grabs in our remaining 14 matches until the end of the season.

42 points, possibly THE most important points we will ever try and win IMHO.

Thought it would be fun to give the Happy's and the Wristy's the chance to put their money where their attitudes are.

What will the meaning of our lives be IF we do not get enough points to get up automatically and fail in the play offs?

What scenarios do you see?

Why do us fans need to STFU with the moaning and push the team over the line?

I'll put my prediction up later to avoid starting the fight!

If we don't go up? We will lose some of our better players, rebuild over the summer and try again next season. Possibly with a new manager. Expectations from the fan base will probably be a lot lower and NCs talk of champions league will look a bit silly.

We can look forward to playing two teams from sheffield next season and games against the Irons. We can also look forward to many many months of abuse from bompey, pompey and brighton (all playing championship football) fans about being the smallest club on the south coast before they forget all about us saying that we are too small to be noticed by massive clubs like thiers.

If we don't go up I think he'll stick with Adkins, rightly or wrongly, until at least christmas time because he is Cortese's man. We'll lose AOC, Fonte and possibly Lallana. I think we'll go up though.

I just really can't foresee us doing anything other than getting automatic promotion...why do you lot have to be such a bunch of flanges?

Thats not Phil's question though, he said If we don't get promotion. Whether we will or not is open to debate but that wasn't the question asked.

I'm still think we will go up.

However, if we don't. We'll lose AOC, Lallana, Fonte, Lambert and Morgan. Attendances will go down and the pressure to go up the next season will double. I think if we don't go up Adkins should go. I want stability but if he can't get us out of this league with the current squad, he wont with a weakened one.

Maybe a change in ownership, maybe a new manager, Adkins walking of his own accord, probably new players! Saints will carry on regardless and we will continue to moan lol!!!

If we don't go up the only certainty would be we lose Lallana, Chamberlain and a few others, probably Scheiderlin and Fonte. I think Adkins should stay but wether he will be fired or not is anyone's guess.

The Leibherrs might decide to sell the club, but that could be the case if we go up anyway, Chamberlain will leave regardless of what league we are in as well so promotion this year is not that vital.

For what It's worth I think we will finish second quite comfortably in the end.

IMO no promotion = new manager, losing some decent players and lack of interest from the owners/possible sale of the club

This is not being a wristy more like being a realist.

When Cortese speaks about the 5 year plan he is talking about the whole club, including the Saints foundation, the training ground and redevelopment of the stadium. He won't walk away just because one aspect of the plan is a little bit harder to achieve.

Sorry, but it's not NC's decision to make,he is just the 'site agent' ,if as reported the liebhers are losing interest then they are going to lose even more interest in an expensive team that can't get promoted from a sh!t but notoriously difficult league.

As I've said previously, football is too unpredictable to set 5 year plans,it's ok planning new facilities and setting good foundations with youth development etc etc but to try and plan to get out of 2 difficult leagues and gain promotion to the prem is a joke IMO,if it was that easy to predict then my football bet would come in every week.

At the start of next season we will be into year 3 of 'the 5 year plan',if promotion isn't achieved at the end of this season then I will stick my neck out and say that the plan hasn't worked and is probably off track, something which will probably cross the minds of the owners.

Why chuck good money at a club which can't get out of this league.....they could do that by spending nothing.

If I owned the club and Bournemouth got promoted over us then I would pull the plug on the cash and say go and do it the Bournemouth way,go and get promoted with rejects, players bought with a whip round and loans.

OK so some basic maths I did when putting the OP up.

The best guess is that Saints cost ML around 14mil. In theory (as it is privately owned these days) and forgetting for a moment asset value, IF we fail to gain promotion this year, AOC will go for 10mil (probably in one lump). RL, JF are worth at least 1mil each and Adam is worth at least 2mil, making the money back. With a few others possibly wanting to get off the bus then EITHER a profit arises OR the funds could be retained.

So, IN THEORY, we could sell our best assets and the new owners COULD have recovered their investment.

So my view on things is that as a 1 in 100 possibility, the Liebherr family get their money back without any (currently visible) huge emotional connection, We are left with a stable club earning it's way in the world and (IN THEORY) NC could have complete control and ownership of the club for a pound which gives the family a minimal profit.

So IF we don't go up, ONE scenario could be that NC owns us runs us and gets NA to build an affordable team for next year on his Scunny model.

Personally, rich owners or sustainable club, NPC or L1 I think we will do well next year. I HOPE we have continued committed owners with NC at the helm, BUT if we don't I still think we will be on the start of the road upwards

All well and good, but Cortese has already said that should the Liebherrs pull out he's had other people approach him wanting to be part of the set up who can put funds in.

League one will only continue to be a harder and harder league to escape from, as much as the elite in the Premiership will continue to accelerate away from the mediocre mid range clubs the championship and consequentely those that are dumped from it will equally continue to become better. Jesus, even the likes of Crawley town are more then likely going to be a decent enough team given a few years with the finances at their disposal.

Look at the NPC currently, realistically every team in that league has on paper a equal enough chance to beat each other, the league is very very open, yes, you can see potential front runners and laggers but in reality they are all in a decent enough shout to be promoted. Then look at the teams that may be relegated. S****horpe, Sheff Utd, Palace, Preston, four of those are 1st division teams, and added to a league 1 that is already starting to fill with decent teams vying to get out.

We need promotion, we need it this season, this league will only become harder and harder to escape from season after season. Personally I think we will manage it but even in the NPC it will be not be easy. I do though think we will be ok, no matter what people say our form has been pretty consistant since Adkins has turned up, I can't see those around us carrying on for the next 15 or so games. We have the squad to achieve promotion one way or another, i honestly think it will end up more a two horse race then it appears and us and Brighton will pull away from the pack, them 1st us 2nd.

Personally part of me doesn't care if we get promoted into the nomans land that is the prem, we will have to sell our soul to make it into the elite.

In the words of Basil Fawlty "There you go again, stating the bleedin obvious"

Which is why the thread was hypothetical in extremis. It asked a "What IF" question to give some thought to what might occur.

There is no doubt whatsoever that football with the new financial caps & squad size regulations has become more competitive this season. Many articles are now looking at the PL and pointing out that the "relegation scrap" could be one of the biggest for years with teams all the way into the current top half of the table being at risk. OBVIOUSLY as the financial rules even the playing field, it gets harder to make the step up each level which is why we are ALL so strung out on results ATM.

So, back to What if?

We don't go up with an NPC quality sqaud, the standards in the other leagues continue to improve and more competition exists in L1. What happens then?

Sell the stars and build a team like Bompey? Throw more money at "L1 Superstars" WHAT would YOU do? What do you see NC doing? what do you see The Liebherr family doing?

I think we will end up second and go up automatically.

If however we dont and bow out in the play-offs ( or heaven forbid dont make them ) i think Adkins will be sacked. Surely like Pardew NC has set a target and I cant see NC as a man to take failure lightly.

I believe most our players will stay as I think a few of them will be on decent money already - they will only go if a big money transfer comes in with a big money wage to tempt the player away.

I cant see the Liebherr group pulling out as they have a 5 year plan - and I daresay they intend to stick it out for 5 years at least.

Question for the local guys and girls that go to watch - Could you spend another season watching Divy 1 footy ?

Doesn't matter what division we're in tbh, i'd still be going.

The people who kept going in our CCC relegation season have sat through the worst we'll ever see for our team, i'm 99.99% sure of that.
