Thedelldays Posted 20 March, 2011 Share Posted 20 March, 2011 just having a look and feck me, we are very tight at the back and difficult to break down it seems.. only let in 3 goals in the last 8 in the league...... we have only let in something like 1 goal at home since jan 1st..(in the league) cant really remember saints being so mean at the back....one year with WGS springs to mind..but other than that...????? maybe that has had a knock on effect in the champagne football so many crave for (and not going to get in division 3)..... very, VERY impressive
gogo_saint Posted 20 March, 2011 Share Posted 20 March, 2011 Thats incredible! It's been a long time since we were so solid. Whilst solid isn't always exciting those chaps on match of the day say the best teams need to be built on strong defences. Fantastic stuff Saints. benjii Posted 20 March, 2011 Share Posted 20 March, 2011 Kelvin out! He is rubbish!!111!!1 The defence have no confidence in him and always look like they will literally do a poo in their pants. And his kicking gives away loads of goals and there was a cross once he didn't catch and if he would just throw it out to a full-back every time without even considering whether it would put us under pressure we would be better FFS. LeBenali Posted 20 March, 2011 Share Posted 20 March, 2011 Also noticed we've only let in 10 goals at home this season, the best in the league. It's quite a novelty!

hypochondriac Posted 20 March, 2011 Share Posted 20 March, 2011 And the TSW banal comment of the year award goes to..... It's true though. People have a tendency to go overboard with stats about being unbeaten or winning streaks saying how impressive it is. If I'm honest I don't think something like that is particularly impressive in the third division as our players should be vastly superior to the majority anyway. Dalek2003 Posted 20 March, 2011 Share Posted 20 March, 2011 I remember under Hoddle we went something like seven games without conceeding. Correct. Hoddle had the defence in superb form and this helped push the Saints into one of their best POSITIONS IN THE PREMIER LEAGUE !!! This is a fact despite the attempts of some fans o airbrush or change history. One presumes that their motivation is to disguise their part in the blocking of the re-appointment of one of our most successful managers and Saints consequent relegation. And for those going on about previous Managers wasn't there somebody in the 91/92 season whose name must not be mention who's team only conceded something like 1 goal in 7 games. hypochondriac Posted 20 March, 2011 Share Posted 20 March, 2011 Arsenal have conceeded 12 at home, thats 2 more than Saints, are you impressed yet? Arsenal are in the premier league. We are in league with players who are meant to be much too good for this division. It's a good statistic but not overly impressive considering the facts I have already outlined. We have vastly better players than most in the division but at times they underperform so although we get good results in general, our performances could certainly be better. Just because we have decent players does not mean there is not always the opportunity to improve things. We can't play the same two CMs every week because they will tire. Our defence, which this thread is about, is underperforming to the degree that we have the best defence in the league. Yeah, real rubbish and really underperforming. Lallana's Left Peg Posted 20 March, 2011 Share Posted 20 March, 2011 Our defensive record is also quite impressive considering it can be argued that with all players fit and available, we'd play two strikers and two attacking midfielders / wingers as well. The team is set-up to attack.

Yeah, real rubbish and really underperforming. I never said that and I was responding to Fan the Flames' comments about why we could do with a CM signing. I agree we don't need any new defensive signings between now and the end of the season.
