The Kraken Posted 31 March, 2013 Share Posted 31 March, 2013 James Beattie is on Late Kick Off right now. Looking much thinner than he ever was with us! So, just wondering; while he was obviously good for us, he was also a bit "chunky" for a pro sportsman, wasn't he? And just like Rickie Lambert has improved his diet and physique to improve his all round game; how good could Beattie have been with us if he was uber-fit? Not in same class as rickie for sheer talent in my opinion.
Turkish Posted 31 March, 2013 Share Posted 31 March, 2013 Not much to be honest. Big powerful player but an awful first touch and technically miles behind Lambert. Decent and effective for us but no where near as good as he thought he was.

An absolutely superb header of the ball, to be fair. I said when we signed Rickie that he was the best header of the ball we'd had since Beattie. Just a natural instinct to know where the ball would drop and how to hold off the defender.

Funny isn't it, he's not that different to Andy Carroll, strong, good in the air, crap first touch, yet at the time on the old S4E it was a disgrace Beattie wasn't and England regular yet Andy Carroll is nothing more than a pub player. True. Also they loved the social side of life; Carroll loves a pint (allegedly) and I always used to see Beatts in the Rhino back in the day. Pugwash Posted 31 March, 2013 Share Posted 31 March, 2013 Interesting comment that Beatts just made about Sir Clive getting Jonny Wilkinson in to teach the squad how to kick a football! The senior players just ignored him and went home.

Yeah true, he was always in there when I was too. Other players often seen in there were Mark Draper, Wayne Bridge, Paul Stewart, Gary Monk. Hassan Kachloul and Matt Oakley were always in Cenos. Beattie was clearly uber-fit when he was with us under Strachan, that's why he suddenly started scoring goals.
John Boy Saint Posted 1 April, 2013 Share Posted 1 April, 2013 I always remember queuing up outside the Megastore for our Yellow cup final shirt, the players were just leaving SMS to travel away (might have been to Man City for the last game), my Wife was ambling back to me in the queue in her own little world heading for an imminent collision with Beattie he stopped she looked up in stunned surprise when she saw who it was from under 2 feet: she is a petite 5'2" and I was surprised at how trim he actually was in his casual clothes compared to when you saw him on the pitch. lloydie Posted 1 April, 2013 Share Posted 1 April, 2013 He might have a tapeworm, heroin addiction or aids? Some possible explanations for his weightloss now, can't be sure to be honest.
kpturner Posted 1 April, 2013 Share Posted 1 April, 2013 Some short memories here. We did not have any poorly conditioned players under Strachan - and even if we did, Beattie wouldn't have been one of them.
Saints boy in Leeds Posted 1 April, 2013 Share Posted 1 April, 2013 Thought Beattie liked the muffins. Used to DJ at the Rhino sometimes, saw him in there loads, a mate of mine is good friends with Bridge and got to meet them a few times, nice guys.
