Southampton’s Rickie Lambert could be a surprise to many fans since he’s known for his finishing rather than playmaking. But the numbers say he’s created more chances from open play than any other English player this campaign with 66 of them. It’s about time he got a look-see with England.

He really was superb yesterday.

I put on twitter that the problem with a Rickie Lambert through ball is that you need Rickie Lambert on the end of them....

The biggest problem with rickie doing anything not directly in front of goal is he can't collect his own pass, flick or whatever

Those stats back up what we who watch him regularly know about him, that he is much more than the big target man (contrast with Carroll's stats). They also underline two other things we know: 1) welbeck is in the team to run and battle for 50:50's and 2) the most obvious role for Lambert would be Rooney's and he Lambert isn't going to replace Rooney.

As an aside the article contains the inevitable comparison with Holt again. Every time I see him lately he's either cheating or fouling (another terrible tackle last night on MoTD).

What drives me mental is that many fans of other clubs compare him to Grant Holt and view them as similar types of player. Personally I think he's actually quite close to Teddy Sheringham in style and becoming more so. Interesting to see how under MP JayRod is often now the furthest forward.

I was about to post the same thing, until I saw I had been beaten to he punch. He is a very gifted footballer, very aware, a superb passer, good in the air, great finisher. He only lacks pace. England can't score has at the moment, play him behind Jay and we'd score a hatful.
