KK the 2nd Posted 24 July, 2013 Share Posted 24 July, 2013 Apparently Cisse was fined £5000 for not wearing the club shirt with "Wonga" on it ... ... fine rises to £4,568,773 if not paid by Monday
The9 Posted 24 July, 2013 Share Posted 24 July, 2013 Not sure why him being pictured in a casino (not necessarily gambling) means that his opinions on high APR money lending exploiters is any less valid, I'm pretty sure neither of them is mentioned in the Koran. Though I do think it's rather convenient that he's only bothered by this season's sponsor and not last, which was also a money lender, just not one with a high APR... Islamists don't hold with gambling afaik (there again there are no gays either) If you look closely at the photo Cissé seems to have something in his hand, chips no doubt (and not those wrapped in newspaper either) A sharia law islamist shouldn't be anywhere near a casino. hutch Posted 24 July, 2013 Share Posted 24 July, 2013 He's just looking to get out. The charging of interest is against his muslim religious principles, but if that bothered him then he would have had the same issues with the sponsors of the Premier League that he does with Wonga. Islam ( and indeed Judaism, and even some strict christian sects) forbid charging interest on loans, and gambling. (See 'usury') Cissé's stance made little enough sense given, as you say, he apparently had no problem with their sponsor last season. Though he might argue that responsible lending bank/company is not as immoral as a payday loan company. However, his also reportedly frequenting a casino makes his position farcically inconsistent. tony13579 Posted 25 July, 2013 Share Posted 25 July, 2013 I fully respect his stance. Wonga's business model is charging huge interest rates to people who 65%+ are financially illiterate and can't afford the huge interest charged. Barclays customers are broadly financially more capable and can afford the loans. Even gambling is fine in my book if it is within limits. Ie going out with £75 entertainment money, when it's gone it's gone. Is no different to me than blowing £75 on a meal and booze. As for the religious link, how many people get married in a church who never attend church? then get divorced after 7 years? For the record I chose to get married in a registry office, I won't buy BAT shares and I wouldn't wear a wonga shirt. I didn't go to university and I don't play sport so I won't wear a college logo or sports logo shirt.
dubai_phil Posted 25 July, 2013 Share Posted 25 July, 2013 Ah the gambling, banking & Islam conundrum...... Why is Saudi' Royal Yacht always parked in Monte Carlo bay? Why does Dubai Horse Racing not allow gambling but allows you to do a free of charge 6 horse accumulator where you can win a Mercedes? And we have Dubai Duty Free Draws & Shopping Festival Raffles where you buy a ticket? I had some great nights out at the Casinos in Cairo & Beirut Most Gulf States opened Stock Exchanges and allowed the local banks to lend money to everyone, which they spunked onto the Stock Exchanges and lost DIFC and the rest selling Interest earning Pension & Savings Plans to locals Standard Dubai Rules - perform and quietly carry on without passing any judgement opinion or comment But yeah, Cisse did a great Impression of Shane Watson there - interesting Opening, got off the mark well then, went and got himself out to an obvious flaw. Might be fine in your book, it's certainly fine in mine, but it surely isn't fine in Islam. The fact Cisse quoted his religion when stating he was opposed to Wonga, but then goes out gambling regularly, is stupid.
chocco boxo Posted 25 July, 2013 Share Posted 25 July, 2013 Apparently he has come to a compromise and is only going to wear 3 letters from sponsor on his shirt! I know the first 2 are WO what could the 3rd be?
