Skacel and Euell turn out for Reserves

Surprised no-one has mentioned that the Reserves lost to Swindon in a pre-season friendly. Wotte gave Rudi and Euell a run-out which suggests to me at least that they may be staying. If Rasiak was staying I would have thought he would also have played some part, but he didn't.

He is giving them match practice, without involving them too much in first-team action - because ultimately they are both for sale.

Last season we could have done with euell winning the ball and apart from a few games near the end of the season he didnt

he did when it was needed.Starting with the morale boosting last minute goal at Wolves that ultimately made us safe.

Seems to me that if they are fit and available they should play. Pointless having them sat on their 15k a week for doing faff all. Doesnt seem like there is much interest in them at the moment and even when there is wages will always be a problem. If we go a few games without some points they are well worth bearing in mind. Personally I think they could both fit into this system quite well.

I agree... they should play. At very least they should be on the bench. Unless they are leaving - which my guess is they must be.

Disappointed as I don't believe we have the depth of squad we need to have a good run in the championship.

lets see what happens if/when we do get injuries on our prefered players first.

I`ll be very surprised if neither of Rudi or Euell are recalled into action if 2 out of Schneiderlin,Wotton and Gilletget injured..

it could just be that Poortvliet thinks Rudi and Euell are not his first choice, even if they werent for sale !

personally from my point of view i hope the Rudi stays because he can simply be an asset to the team. Would fit in with Jan's style of play im sure. I remember from the 2006/2007 season that when he was played in his best position of left wing he was lethal. The amount of chances that he created where countless and also he is a very good set-piece specialist. My favourite player for sure so i hope he stays.

Euell on the other hand as proved towards the end of last season can be a key player. Most people on here would agree with me that for most of the season he was a player who was playing with zero confidence and really was poor. But as soon as Pearson came in he soon changed as a player and really impressed me at the end of the season. In my opinion we should keep him as he would be good back up to what we already have.

Also worth mentioning that Lancashire got through 90 minutes on his return from injury. Not only that, but he got himself on the scoresheet too! I have no doubt we'll start seeing him involved with the first team in the not too distant future, especially considering he was on the subs bench for the Exeter game.

Absolutely disagree. You don't undermine the confidence of your first choice first 11 by dropping them for players that you are expecting to sell and neither do you disrupt the stability of the team playing together unless there is good reason. You do keep the surplus players fit and in the shop window by playing them in the reserves. If the sales don't go through and any of them get a first team opportunity through injury or suspensions, its then up to them to try to hold onto the shirt by an exceptional performance. You don't put them in on past reputations.

Key things from the Reserves game were not so much about Skacel and Euell playing, but more that Forecast had his first game and both Lancashire and Racine scored.

Lancashire and Racine - the Saints CB's of the future?

Forecast - Saints goalkeeper of the future?

Looking good.

Rasiak will sign on loan for Watford today. It is already on Wikipedia so it must be true!

Best news for a long time,I have always rated him as a better prospect than Theo.

I think that Rudi, Euell, Thomas, Rasiak, Davis are all for sale.

There's no doubt about it, its been said before that all are for sale. That doesn't mean they will ALL be sold. Rasiak deal looks to be just about done (Watford) hence he did not play. My guess though that there is absolutely no interest in Skacel and Euell and it looks more like they will still be around in 2 weeks time, hence why they are being given games. It would suggest that JP would be happy if these two stayed, whereas I think he sees Thomas as surplus to requiements, since we have at least 6 other CBs when they are all fit (Killer, Davies, Perry, Wotton, Spiderman and Lancashire). Ironic really that the position that we were weakest in last season we now have a surplus, having already lost Claus, Powell and Makin.

Apologies if already mentioned elsewhere but perhaps they were being given a run out in case JP decides he needs some extra experience for the Birmingham game on Saturday and needed to keep their match fitness ticking over?

In response to adriansfc

"The ONE player? Even though it's Lallana's best position, John and McGoldrick could both play there, and Euell too."

I never said that we should change things outright but after all Skacel is a Southampton player.

Why is there still the mentallity amongst the faithful that we should still need to sell our better players rather than want them included in the team?

If they needed to have been sold desperately then they would have been by now

Going back to other players you mention

Lallana I can understand him getting his chance, John & McGoldrick are more out and out strikers and would be better playing together with either Lallana or Skacel playing in behind them, as those 2 have more creativity than Euell.

...except that Davies is injured, Perry is 36, Wotton and Schneiderlin are both midfielders, Lancashire has never played a first team game, and everyone takes a big gulp of air whenever Killer goes for a tackle.

Just one other point about the "high earners"

We had bad season ticket sales. We are early in the season for earning money from home games (ie cash flow) and we kno we are pretty well broke.

MOST players have a basic wage, then bonuses including appearance money. So a high earner will have a high appearance fee.

So there COULD be an ulterior motive - the kids are playing ok and we don't yet have an injury crisis, so maybe keeping them on the fringes is a "sensible" short term measure...

Skacel should be playing in the hole behing McGoldrick, he scored loads for Hearts and has hardly ever played in his natural position whilst at Southampton.

His natural position is left midfield. He's played the majority of games for Saints in that position. He wasn't that good.

believe Wooton has played more games at CB
