Comments on here about Abbott and Abbas.  They were not given a contract for this year, they were already under contract.

I suspect if they were not, one would not have received a contract this season.  We would have looked at an overseas batsman. Dean Elgar was mentioned but he would have been very expensive. Anyway we could not go for him this year.

We have also suffered in the bowling by the absence of Keith Barker, out injured.  He has a knee injury that was recovering until he injured it again! Due a procedure which, if successful, will mean him playing soon. If it is not they he will be out for a long time.

Turner was practicing at lunch on Friday so hopefully not too far away

Gubbins dropped on 9, then Vince out for 5 next ball. Bit of a mare so far.

We are just proving once again that against quality quicks we are lamentably bad at batting.  Prest gone first ball. Never mind, we'll probably make about 120 and our seamers will plug away all day whilst Surrey make 500.

Ahh our yearly thrashing at the oval !.To be fair they are much better than pretty much any other team, especially one that never bats well there.

Surrey will be all out for maximum points here and a quick finish

46/4 in reply, we’ve certainly rocked them so far. I’m sure they’ll get a partnership going eventually and probably lead by at least a hundred.

They did recover, and slightly in front of the game on 123/5 to Hants 151. Key first hour tomorrow which will go a long way to deciding the game. Get Burns early, Steel and Clark quickly and could limit the lead to 20-30 runs. Can’t afford any partnerships to build though.

Abbas brilliant bowling 13-7-7-1, Abbott 2-35 off 13, Wheal adding pace and kept it accurate 1-25 off 12. Fuller a bit looser but did get Pope out plus made vital runs in our innings.

Must have been a real green one, even the Kookaburra would have swung let alone the Dukes which seams as well.

Surrey get a decent total in testing conditions, be surprised if they need to bat again. Hope we’re not playing them again this year (I know we beat them in a dead rubber last year)

Punjab Kings have just completed the highest ever T20 run chase, after being set 261 to win.

I read on the BBC that the pitches have been deliberately produced to be batting tracks and the boundaries shortened.

On the domestic front, how the #$## did Surrey score that many?

Inoffensive bowling. Fuller and Wheal, well it's just straight up and down most of the time. No lift, no swing, nada, always a ball somewhere in each over just begging to be hit. Abbas bowls nice stuff, but it's not going to do much against entrenched batsman like Burns, just keeps the runs down from his end. Compared to class acts like Worrall, it's second rate, even pretty rubbish.

Against good sides in the Championship, we've become sort of second rate.

116-5 close, unless it’s rain all day tomorrow it’s going to be a Surrey win.

Vince and Prest did put on 46 but Gus Atkinson came on bowling 90mph+ and Vince needed treatment after a hit on the shoulder and out not long after.

Surrey with their weapons with ball and bat won’t define Hampshire’s D1 status, it’s the Worcestershire, Kent, Notts and Somerset where wins need to be accrued to stay up.

This teams on life support. Can score runs, can’t bowl our overs quick enough, can’t take wickets. Reboot urgently needed. Vince has got to get his act together, a county  batting average of 39 is about 5 less than it should be. He’s a far more talented player than Carberry, but Carbs had the fortitude. Needs to take a look at himself.

Looks like a 2 point fine as well unless the final two wickets can put on stands bigger than the rest of the innings.

It is a poor performance but when you look at their team and ours, how many Hampshire players make their first team, genuinely? Possibly Dawson for Cameron Steel (ex-Hants loanee, was an opener then). It’s internationals vs second XI in places. Their other 90mph option (Overton) was injured too! Curran brothers at the IPL too.

Durham would have been a better litmus test than Surrey or Lancs. Worcs, Notts (even worse start), Kent and Somerset - they are the games that are must-win. Points elsewhere are a bonus.

Another 4 day no show at - The Oval, this could be a season to forget in 4 day cricket and there I was thinking of a 5th place finish. Rory Burns showed by gutsing it out as an opener that it is possible to put a decent score on the board,do not think it helps that are openers are just 22 and 23 respectively.
