VectisSaint Posted 24 March, 2009 Share Posted 24 March, 2009 Sort of feel insulted that MLT is considered a maverick because he played for Saints all his career. He wouldn't have been thus if he had played for Manure or Arse from start to end. The article is almost saying that MLT must be a bit of a plonker to have stayed at Saints. Tripe. Harry Faz Posted 24 March, 2009 Share Posted 24 March, 2009 I have no problems with what they say - not sure we will ever see a true legend like matty again at a club like saints - look at Theo for an example of what happens now, he was gone before he really got started. Alain Perrin Posted 24 March, 2009 Share Posted 24 March, 2009 I think it is a pity (our gain) that MLT didn't leave Saints. He was a player with so much talent and but little motivation, probably because it came so easy to him. With the drive of someone (allegedly) like Frank Lampard, MLT could have been a world great, rather than a localised legend. He decided he wanted to stay in his comfort zone and I don't blame him for that, it was his choice. I do think those that hold up the reason he didn't leave as loyalty are deluding themselves though, I think it was far more about MLT than SFC. That said, no doubting he is a Saints fan. Well, the fact that he didn't do what "normal" players do and progress to a bigger club is odd, and that makes him a maverick. And as a Saints fan, and someone that worships MLT I think he was a bit of a plonker for staying with Saints all his career. I wanted him to play for England more, and I wanted him to go off and prove that he was brilliant and could cut it at the top level at a big club. He never did, IMHO he should have, ergo maverick and bit of a plonker.
skintsaint Posted 25 March, 2009 Share Posted 25 March, 2009 That said, no doubting he is a Saints fan. Was a Spurs fan I thought and the club then grew on him?
Jack the Saint Posted 25 March, 2009 Share Posted 25 March, 2009 Was a Spurs fan I thought and the club then grew on him? Well he turned down Spurs so I think we may be his number 1 club now

fareham saint phil Posted 25 March, 2009 Share Posted 25 March, 2009 Although he is idolised by Saints supporters everywhere, it is a measure of the man and his skills that football fans all over the world (yes world) know who he is and can talk you through his best goals, they all seem to have a favorite MLT goal. How many times have you been talking to fans of other teams and they say something like "I bet you wish you still had MLT in your team". I even have ports*outh mates who admit to his undoubted skills and one even said he paid to go see him at the dell twice because he was that good!!!! shock horror He is considered to have a "Lack of ambition" for not moving on by the press etc, but football fans i know and have spoken to admire his loyalty, that is rare today. Please dont say players like lampard and gerrard are as loyal as him as £140,000+ a week buys alot these days. MLT wasn't on massive wages as we all know, and could have made alot more by moving on. Ah but he would not be a localised legend if he had left saints and saints would now be in the conference. Plus, he would have never been a world great (although he deserved to be) as the managers were never prepared to let him free roam on the pitch as proven by several England managers at the time.
