Daren W Posted 20 April, 2009 Share Posted 20 April, 2009 What a day it was! It does bring a smile and then it doesn't. This season just completely ****ed all over the memory of that day. One of the best days as a Saints fan now completely ruined when Pearson was dumped and the players that saved us that day, farmed out on loan... Stern John, Marek Sagnowski... what a waste... Mole Posted 20 April, 2009 Share Posted 20 April, 2009 I remember leaving that game delighted, but in the back of my mind knowing it meant the return of Lowe. History has shown i was right to feel as i did.

Exactly, I think that was one of the best games I have ever seen just for the atmosphere and the optomisim that followed, but come september that was all gone and now we have neither the manager nor the players who could handle that situation (as the weekends result showed) however I still believe (hope) we can stay up, especially if we pack St Mary's on saturday again! skintsaint Posted 20 April, 2009 Share Posted 20 April, 2009 still annoys me seeing the players celebrating like they won the cup... shouldnt have been in that situation in the first place.

I think it was out of sheer relief, and as stanley said there was a sense that Ruperts return would make it all almost irrelevant so people wanted to celebrate the good times whilst they could

saints_is_the_south Posted 20 April, 2009 Share Posted 20 April, 2009 (edited) A day i'll never forget as long as i live but unfortuantly as Daren W says, this season has just completly p*ssed over it. I honestly thought after that day that with Pearson in charge we'd finally start moving up again until Rupes decided to put pay to all that optimism. eelpie Posted 20 April, 2009 Share Posted 20 April, 2009 Oh dear. That was wonderful. So what's been the difference between that team and our current one? Brings tears ...
eelpie Posted 20 April, 2009 Share Posted 20 April, 2009 And bang on cue - the OS's version:- http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/articles/article.php?page_id=11680 (This should have been out a few weeks ago. We had players with spirit then. Such a pity the OS didn't remind our current crop of non-fighters sooner of what previous Saints teams could do.) Frank's cousin Posted 21 April, 2009 Share Posted 21 April, 2009 Looking back it was a bit sureal - to date, my only pitch invasion! - Full of optimism and hope for the coming season as Pearson did seem to have something about him. I have commented on understanding Lowes logic of going continental with the kids, but I would still love to know WHY he did it at that time. I dont believe its somee childish Crouch hire thing, more his own ego driven belief that the Ajax model was the way forward as he always seemed into that. Why do I believe that? Because I dont think even Lowe was that stupid to have missed the feelgood we had in that survival campaighn with Pearson as the talisman and he must surely ahve realised that he would have been granted some positives had he kept that going, so I can only think that it was a true belief that as we were at the bottom of the CCC, with the only way being up it was teh right tiome to risk the new set up. He was wrong as it turned out, and as many have said was predictable - I disagree with the certainty of failure, but appreciate the risk was very great. What has happened since has obviously cemented the reality that it was a mistake of the greatest magnitude, but it is impossible to predict for sure how Nigel would have done with the more limited resources available than he had at the end of last season - but we did at the very least have some momentum, and its difficult to factor in how that would have been effected by the departures we had last summer and the promotion of the kids to the 1st team squad.
