david in sweden Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 (thats the O.T. text of course) but.. drinking my morning cup of tea out of one of many Saints mugs to choose from I find myself looking at the one for season 2004/5 ..our last season in ........the Premiership. Man.utd, Arsenal, Liverpool , Chelsea, Everton yeah, yeah, but whats this..Charlton Athletic, Norwich, .....aren't they also League 1 clubs now ? ...also Crystal Palace.......now a CCC side......and West Brom. The perennial trampoline club... up and down and up and down **....... Middlesbrough, well their as good as down..and the mighty Newcastle.. hovering on the brink....seems that despite Saints' desperate situation there are quite a few other clubs on the brink of .......disaster! .........and only 5 years ago ....How (indeed) are the mighty fallen! alpine_saint Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 If the Premiership and the Football Association cannot see that they have conspired with Sky to kill English football in the evidence of the decline of clubs like Saints, Boro and Toon, and the utter sh*te served up by the national squad, then there really is no hope for the sport. At the moment, I am getting a big kick out of seeing my son's U9 team. Now there is real passion. The joy of seeing the fruit of your loins score is immeasurable... lee_saint Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 I'm not suprised though at all. I have a book at home with how the leagues have ended up since they started. Clubs like Wigan and Hull in the lower leagues, Derby, Sheff United and Wolves dropping down the leagues in the 70's and 80's.
londonsaint1604 Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 It is not surprising as three clubs get relegated each season I think the point he's tring to make is that we're not the only club to suffer a very sharp decline. There's plenty of others he didn't mention as well.
Kingsland Red Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 Lee Saint, I have reckoned for years that football clubs generally get back to where they started, generally on about a 20 year cycle.
The9 Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 Lee Saint, I have reckoned for years that football clubs generally get back to where they started, generally on about a 20 year cycle. Tell that to Accrington and Notts County.
Flyer Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 Boro are in big trouble if they come down, they had a must win game and there were thousands of empty seats available. I think any long term prem team that comes down will get into trouble now and I think WBA are the most likely to go back up because Boro and Newcastle will have to dismantle their teams with all the good players leaving. Agree with you mate, I'm sure within the next ten years there will be another team coming up from the lower leagues who will get in the Premiership, then again, Rochdale have been in League Two since the 70's! Redondo Saint Posted 18 May, 2009 Share Posted 18 May, 2009 I am sure it won't be long before the Premier League decide to break away from the other divisions and have their own 'franchise'. No team would be relegated similar to the American football and basketball leagues. That way they keep all of the money and the only thing to play for is cup finals. This would be very boring in my opinion, but at least there are strict rules regarding salary caps, etc, and the lower teams get to pick the best players. This means no one team dominates every season. It's all about the money in the Premiership and this is a way of keeping - watch this space! Personally I think non-league has become more attractive to support when I return.

Its already in the process of happening with the PL2. Team will be handpicked to go into that so Leeds would get in instead of well run smaller teams like Burnley, Swansea or Donny. They want reduced promotion and relegated, perhaps to 1 team up, 1 down. I think it would kill off anyone not in those leagues.

In my many years as a fan, I think that Charlton were rarely ever much better than a CCC side, although Curbishley did hold them together for a long time and Norwich and Saints spent a lot of seasons together firstly in the Div.3 South, later in the early 1960's in old Div.2, (CCC) and again later in the70's and laterly some seasons in the Prem. Now we end up in League 1 and going to play each other AGAIN next season.(who'd believe it ?) Edited 24 May, 2009 by david in sweden
lee_saint Posted 24 May, 2009 Share Posted 24 May, 2009 (edited) I was thinking about this again yesterday, so I looked at Divison One (now Premier League) Twenty years ago. So heres how the league finished in 1988/89 Arsenal (Premiership) Liverpool (Premiership) Notts Forest (Championship) Norwich City (League One) Derby County (Championship) Spurs (Premiership) Coventry City (Championship) Everton (Premiership) QPR (Championship) Millwall (League One...at the moment) Man United (Premiership) Wimbledon (Conference or League One, depends what you think of MK Dons) Southampton (League One) Charlton (League One) Sheff Wednesday (Championship) Luton Town (Conference) Aston Villa (Premiership) Middlesborough (Premiership...at the moment) West Ham United (Premiership) Newcastle (Premiership..at the moment) You can see that alot of the teams in the top flight then, are not now, it's how the league system works, clubs rise and fall. dubai_phil Posted 24 May, 2009 Share Posted 24 May, 2009 Taking the discussion one step further, in the current economy, and in the current structure of football, is the "City Team" concept also not at risk of becoming obsolete? Take out for a moment the obvious historical issue and the "tribal" nature of football fans, is it actually in the long term interests of football that apart from a few thousand down the road, there is a vast and highly populated swathe of England that are denied access to real live PL football? Sure us old un's would fight tooth and nail to keep our "city history" but as a market place, we fell in love with real football and then we pay our satellite subscriptions in order to keep watching it. I was thinking back to the days of getting the cheap kid train ticket down to the Dell and a kids ticket for the Chocco Box - probably about 4 pounds - two weeks pocket money (back in the 1900's!) Today how much would it cost? How many days in advance would the bookings need to be made? Get Dad's credit card on the internet... yeah right But what happens in that massive triangle that cuts off most of Southern and Western England? Where are the kids being taken by their dad's to see Giggs, Rooney, Lampard et al? How will the new generation get REAL football into their blood? Boro's crowds are just awful, Blackburn offer ultra cheap ST's for next season, the crowds don't go. Too many clubs in too close proximity as the hard core of fans get older or find family life getting in the way PL2 and salary caps and "the American model just becomes the start of a slippery slope to Franchise Football West Country Rovers in the big Derby against South Coast Shippers, East Anglian Angels vs Lancashire Larks (because the Mancs, Liverpool, Chelski etc won't be playing English football anymore) Football is wrong, the distribution of money is wrong, but a great deal of care needs to be taken to balance Greed with the long term future and our historic roots. And you know what? Greed will win out EVERY time, and as a result, Franchise Football will arrive
lee_saint Posted 24 May, 2009 Share Posted 24 May, 2009 Franchise football has been 'around' for years, during the 70's people suggested we in England might go that way. I'm sure it won't, football clubs would just leave the league. Football needs to be left alone, Rio Ferdinand said it yesterday on Soccer AM by 'stating it's a beautiful game which the men in suits like the change'.
