After a serious bout of nostalgia on the main board (http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?p=474690#post474690) thought it might be worth starting a thread for any oldies with memories of Southampton "back in the day". Could be anything, must be a ton of funny stories out there - just a few possible themes off the top of my head: City events - The Southampton Show, The Carnival, The Fair ("A load of Pompey are coming down!"), Radio 1 live from the precinct Nightlife - Barbarellas, The Top Rank ("Millionairres" night?!), The Rum Runner, Rainbows, that "indie" one down Ascupart St. in St. Mary's (Manhattens?) Footy Pubs/Lock-ins - Painted Wagon, The Warreners, The Corner Post, Cricketers, Cowherds etc. etc. Old Shops - Edwin Jones (?!) which became Debenhams, Toomers, Parnell's (THE place to buy your 14-hole DM's), Top Shop (body-popping outside!), Subway records The old cinemas - ABC, Gaumont, Odeon, Saturday morning "kids shows" Stuff to do - The Sports Centre, The Lido (legendary in '76!), The Central Baths and 'the 16'6" end' complete with kids flashing out the front windows!, Top Rank Ice Rink, The Stevedors Xmas Party, "Uncle Tony's Playtime Club" in the Echo(!), The Tyro League City Landmarks - The Bargate, The Pier, The first McDonalds(!) - actually think it might have been Burger King(?), The Floating Bridge Classic Gigs - The 'new' Mayflower getting wrecked in it's first week when the Pogues played, the Joiners Arms etc. Inter-school rivalry - my old lot vs. Glen Eyre was always a classic... You get the gist, anything and everything welcome...

http://www.saintsweb.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=17250 Done, for anyone interested in a bit of old time banter...

This nostalgia for the old Sports Echo got me thinking about another old Echo related column (in the Southern Evening Echo that is). Totally off topic, but does anyone remember "Uncle Tony's Playtime Club"? What an age of innocence when you'd have a column complete with a picture the bald, late middle-aged "Uncle Tony" imploring the children of Southampton and the surrounding area to write to him! I think you could get your birthday printed. Looking back it seems like something you'd find in The League of Gentlemen/Psychoville... Any other old Echo memories?
-
I was thinking of the old Bananarama song "Na Na Hey Hey Goodbye" (or something!) - "La La, La La La La, Hey Hey, Adam Lallana", but I really like yours too. Perhaps expanding, e.g. One Lallana, Two Lallana, Three Lallana, Four Adam scoring goals for Saints, just how many more? Dazzling defences, aim is being set, This way?, that way?, the ball is in the net La La La La-llana! La La La La-llana (perhaps with frantic "lets all have a disco" type moves?) Regardless of what we go for, his name really deserves a decent song...

Would hate to see the FE go, but it may be a sign of the times. I remember seeing an article a while ago (on Football Focus maybe?) about the demise of the "pink/blue/green 'uns" around the country. Wonder if we can get definitive comment from the Echo? Sure someone from there checks this site.
-
Indeed.
-
One of those names (like Healy, Cureton et al) that you remember coming off the bench against us and the ground giving a collective "oh here we go...". About time we signed a player like this, I think he'll do well.
-
Would have been better (for the tabloids) if his surname, was Butler, but there you go... Good signing hopefully - great experience and an out and out goal scorer. More goal scoring/creating options for AP.
-
Generally they lump the whole Liebherr family together - The Times Rich List did anyway (c. £2.1bn from memory).

Can anyone see Cortese putting up with this much longer ?

Don't bother then! 4-1 today, +ve points. Okay, one swallow does not a summer (autumn?) make, but a start. Incidentally, after sacking Pardew who are 'you' intending to appoint? -
Haven't bothered to read this whole thread, so someone may have mentioned him - but what about Jay Tabb. Saw an article recently which said that Brendan Rogers was trying to offload him on loan from Reading. Okay, he's not a striker per-se but is one of those tricky attacking players who can unlock defences and create chances. Always remember him causing us all sorts of problems at Brentford in the cup a few years ago.
-
Not according to Soccer Saturday... who cares, at least we have that monkey off our back. Mind, still tons of work to do to get anywhere near "safety", think we'll be alright though.

Yes, because it is a long-term plan, and short-term, knee-jerk reactions do not help (as surely we have learned from the last 10 years?!!?). -
The Guardian really has their teeth into P*mpey and "Dr" Fahim. Always good reading...
-
There's a rumour on one of their message boards that David O'Leary or GLEN HODDLE have been lined up to replace Hart (allegedly this comes from Harry Harris). Can't see either of them getting them out of their predicament, but just imagine Hoddle at P*mpey - he'd be even more popular in these parts!
-
I'm still not a fan of Chairman or owners appearing in squad pictures, but the BIG difference is that ML has put his money where his mouth is and has 'earned' the right to appear in the picture. L*** never did - it was just an ego trip on his part.
-
The start of our record-breaking winning run. Probably.
-
Good article. Those idiots already agitating for Pardew to be replaced should know better (you know who you are!) - we have a good young ambitious manager, who already has a wealth of experience. We are on the right track, and it's only a matter of time before we're moving up the table. Replacing managers as a s/t reaction ISN'T the answer. COYS
-
First team to take points off Charlton, and a good away point - shows what we're capable of, and we should now only get better. Need to get the 3 points at home now, and where we can away, and we'll be fine.
-
I was responding to Brightsparks post, and did. What part of my post was e x c r a m e n t in your view? Supporting Pardew, or that the previous regimes were, well, n o t t h a t g r e a t ?
-
Oh please... ...because high turnover of managers has really worked for us in the past hasn't it?! Clearly our start is v disappointing, but this club was rotten (and rotting) to the core - the new regime, need time and a bit of faith from us to turn it around. This is a LONG TERM project - short term reactions won't help at all.
-
So why post a thread like this?!?! He is as accountable for the state of our club as Obama is for the global recession... He's doing the right things, we'll get there.
-
I'd think we'd be a natural choice on the South Coast, due to the transport links and the fact we already have infrastructure for the ground (i.e. just a few Liebherr cranes needed to add a few thousand seats on, rather than P*mpey who don't have a new ground yet, and look increasingly unlikely to get one).

As the late, great, Dave Allen used to say "It's my f&^$£g cake, why can't I eat it?!".
