  1. Just about to be broadcast again - I listened to the first minutes of the programme last night before having to dash out to footie training and was wondering if anything of interest to us might come up! Thank goodness for internet radio..
  2. I reckon that's the first intelligent post you've made!
  3. No, no, no! The whole point is that you measure the right thing in order to reward people: whether bottom line club profits or in footie terms league position etc. Rewarding the buying and selling of players distorts the process of achieving success for the club. It's the same in business as I pointed out. Anybody who has dealt with metrics in business/computing knows you have to measure the right thing: no good achieving 100 transactions per person per day if 50% are incorrect or you are miss-selling PPI insurance or whatever..
  4. June Tabor aaaah. My favourite singer... PS: Thanks for the link; made me feel quite homesick.
  5. I was there! Bologna is nicknamed La Grassa (the fat one because of the good food) and La Rossa (red - coz it's left wing). The administration did fans proud in 1990 as with little notice they helped set up a fans camp, a phone line for the FSA etc.
  6. ..or coach.
  7. See my subsequent post. As for sales people, if they are actually selling physical stuff at a profit perhaps that's better. But I remember early in my career where I came across our shops selling goods on HP to people who had no intention or ability to complete the contract. The shops still got their bonus as they managed to push the costs elsewhere... Sound familiar?
  8. Exactly! It's one of the reason the banks are financially in the sheet because a lot of their paper profits were just moving money around on what turned out to be non or dodgy assets, or trading just for the sake of trading because there might be short term bonuses for the traders. If you have money in a fund they often charge extra funds for buying and selling costs. Sometimes called "churn" in the financial world. That's why the biggest chunk of shares I have I own direct and there are minimal costs involved.
  9. Even if they don't get wound up immediately they are going to find running a business extremely difficult. Expect to see them training on Farlington sports ground (not too bad as pompey municipal pitches go), producing one page team sheets after Bishops printers refuse them credit, stewards going on strike (not being football creditors), wish I still had friends at SSE so they request a security deposit from them for the leccy, all supplies being COD, police request payment in advance for match day security, coach travel paid in advance, external physios getting cash before treatment, the list goes on. Hopefully teams won't loan them players as they can't afford the insurance... Not looking bright, is it?
  10. To give the jury some credit, they have to be certain of guilt, and the fact that they had to have an overnight delay suggests it wasn't a straightforward verdict, and some of them (possibly even a majority) considered there was guilt but not beyond reasonable doubt. I followed the case on here but to give a true opinion I'd need to read a transcript. I never heard any questions such as: "Mr Redknapp, as an admittedly simple soul, why did you fly to Monaco, of all places, to open an account? As you say... such a small sum... What reasons did you have for Monaco? Did your accountant advise this? [Checkable with the accountant..]. Didn't you have perfectly good accounts [with the same bank!] in the UK? Wouldn't it be easier to run a UK account where you even had a personal banker? [Remember he was not aware of the Monaco account.] Ah, it was for investment. What movements were there from this account of an investment nature? [Also verifiable.] etc etc.. If Redknapp should get the England job - and I don't think he will - I won't bother watching them anymore.
  11. My theory is extreme masochism or Stockholm syndrome, or perhaps they just like being shafted..
  12. Well, we aren't firing on all cylinders, but Brum only managed a late winner tonight against you-know-who..
  13. You're right, but there is some information there. You shouldn't have to dig though: http://www.saintsfc.co.uk/page/NewsDetail/0,,10280~2598974,00.html
  14. That's a shame. How about 20 this season and 20 next?

    Exercise

Football training for a couple of hours twice a week and occasional sallies from the bench, although we've just had our winter break (warm temperatures and good grounds) and now meant to be re-starting (snow-covered frozen pitches!).. Off in an hour to train on the all weather - it'll be down to -10, I reckon. I also ski 2/3 times a week and occasional snow-shoe sorties. I only went up for a couple of hours today, although managed a bit of off-piste, because it was sooo perishing cold. Lots of brisk walking around town, to various workplaces carrying books, and shopping. Not too bad for mid-50s, and touch wood/tocca ferro, I've been lucky with my knees.
  16. Yeah, but a lot, lot longer than your summary!
  17. Do what my team do, have me on the bench! I've been doing specialist goal-keeper training this year as reserve keeper but still come on as an outfielder occasionally as sub (big centre-forward type - well, I'm big for Italy!). I'd prefer to play outfield but it can be quite fun doing keeper training and throwing yourself around.
  18. Depends... Sometimes the students come to me, sometimes it's a 14/18 minute walk to various classes I do (I could drive, but really..!). My longest trip is 20 minutes by car to a few hundred metres from here: http://www.regione.vda.it/turismo/new_webcamzoom.asp?img=fenis.jpg
  19. HSB was also available in The Ark at Townhill Park where they had electric diapraghm pumps. I think I had 8 pints once or twice on my birthdays... I actually liked Gales light mild which was available in very few pubs including the village I ended up living in: tastier than the ordinary, I thought. Winter Warmer good, as noted, but you needed a pub with turnover. Shame about all the corporate blanding: Gales, Youngs etc. Thank goodness for the new microbreweries which make visits to the UK so interesting
  20. Ch***t, have we slipped out of the play-off places?
  21. Another thanks from me to to FirstRowSports and to the players on both sides. If it were snowing like that I wouldn't go skiing much as I like the fresh stuff, but to play football... we coped well and at times the possession and pasing was excellent. I hadn't missed Puncheon, but his performance was a revelation and he's making selection hard for NA. Morgan played well after after one or two awkward incidents, but then adapted to the conditions. He needs the movement of Lee and Sharp and a few more options wide. I'll let the full-backs off their awful crossing this time, as having trained on snow I know how difficult it is to cross in those conditions. To be honest satisfied with a point away against a form team: I was dreading a big boot and one of their big forwards doing a toe-poke.
  22. Just to been chatting to a friend in Brum who has no interest in football but happened to put up on Facebook that picture of 'Arry in his new Spurs going away strip.. At the end of the chat I asked her "Guilty" or "not guilty". Guilty! ' she replied! As a treat I gave her a link to this thread and she gave a big chuckle when she saw how many pages there were... She's an internet veteran and knows just how informed experts on a particular subject can be, I'm sure she'll enjoy a dip into the archives and the many amusing, scurrilous and prescient posts there have been on here. The more people know about their behaviour, the better...
  23. Oh gawd, I'm feeling all Alpine, we're going to lose 1-0.. Mind you, in the circumstances a loss for either team would be hard..
  24. Unless it's changed since my time the electricity would be monthly billed.
  25. Exactly! So I'm home in the warm lesson prepping instead and enjoying the Pompey Takeover thread!
