St Paul's was seen as an symbol of our defiance against the German bombing campaign, the Germans thought that if they flattened St Paul's it would have dealt a massive blow to Britain's morale. Churchill knew this as well, so it was protected at all costs. Obviously, a direct hit would have wiped it out, but an incendiary bombs or nearby fires were quickly dealt with. At one point an incendiary bomb landed on the roof and a (very brave) fire warden climbed up to try and retrieve it !!! Luckily it fell out of the roof and on to the streets below. John Boy Saint - I'm particularly interested in WW2 and have visited many sites associated with it, next year I plan to go to Auschwitz and see it for myself.

This. Personally, I don't think people that sign up to a "war" that we have absolutely no reason to be involved in, should be classed as heroes. Yeah, it's a house I'm thinking about buying. As you can see, it needs a bit of modernisation. In my head, its seems just a case of ripping that gas fire out, making safe the pipes, re-establish the open fire, add grate / hearth etc. bet its no way near as simple as that !!!

Hello chaps, after some advice from the DIY'ers out there... How much (roughly) would it cost to replace this gas fire with an open fire. does it have to be done by a corgi registered engineer as the gas pipes will need to be closed off. What sort of process will have to be carried out. cheers for the advice.
