Hull 1-2 Saints - Match Thread
TheAlehouseBrawlers replied to Stud mark of doom's topic in The Saints
City of Culture once I believe, anything else Hull’s famous for? Could only think of Jenny and her camp friend in the caravan on Gogglebox, a bridge that takes you out of the place and some years back there was some fella from Hull with Keith Lemon on Celebrity Juice wearing the SFC Sash Shirt. 7 years ago today many of us were stood outside some Milan bar in warm sunshine with a cold Birra Moretti in hand - tomorrow it will be wind and rain lashing sidewards off the north sea and cup of hot Bovril. How times have changed. -
We’re going to see a big change in players next season whether we go up or remain in the Championship. As said, fail to get promoted and certain players will want out (+ loans). Go up and half this side won’t be suited to the PL anyway and will need changing. You’d need to spend a fortune recruiting the quality to play this possession style immediately in that world. We’ll sign cheap and have to teach them Russball. Fucked by Xmas. And we’ll also have some we’ve sent out on loan (deemed not good enough/don’t want to be here) returning and back on the payroll.

Fair enough, tbh my accent is a bit 'Estuary' so I'm more likely to drop letters than add 'em!

Newsreaders (most notably on the BBC) who stick a non-existent 'r' into words, often place names Glarsgow Parkistarn Barth Belfarst Ugarnda ...to name a few
-
I can see a potential problem here if we're sticking to the SR 'business plan' of buying and developing players and then selling on for big profit (or keep signing loan players), if we keep losing the better ones and then have to continually wait for new arrivals to get-up-to-speed with the 'process' each time, then that will keep setting us back.

Got 0-0 written all over it, they play the same, bore the same and boo the same. Post #6 deserves a mention for a credible account of some-things-Southampton. And looks like we've already been 'mauled by the Tigers', they're charging our lot £30 (ahem, £24, I stand corrected) for tickets, Preston go there next and it's costing them £15. Cheeky tykes. Edit: My mistake - Preston charging us £30 (midweek, live on SKY) robbing northern monkeys. -
Looks more like 34! Plenty of Donnarummas around Southampton, is he "one of our own"? 🤞
-
We looked a good side, should be one of the favourites next summer (where have we heard that before?) - Bellingham is a fantastic player. Shit Wembley atmosphere as usual, half of the posh seats around the 'dugouts' didn't even bother coming back out for the second half. Phillips lucky to stay on the pitch tho!

Hearing now that there are no trains between London Bridge and South Bermondsey (bus replacements) due to engineering works. I'm a little surprised the OB have agreed with the increase in tickets for obvious reasons. The infamous *cough* DEF may have to fall back on the old tried-and-tested Transit Van manoeuvre. Also read that they have been allowing away fans in the lower level (only) if they've got a small following. Bigger supported teams get the upper (only). Looks like we're the first club to get both this season. Slower getaway than ever this time, that's a lot of buses to fill. Edit: Hull at Millwall

Despite all the turbulence amongst fans right now it’s certainly not putting people off. Having a scoot around the UI it says around 2,000 already sold for Hull and a not too shabby 1,300+ for the 500-mile round trip to Preston for the SKY game a few days later. The club can knock some fans for the booing but they can’t knock the effort put in with all these long distance treks oop north. 3,000 almost gone for Millwall too. -
Another forum to explain tactics, ST holders only, all questions sent in before the meeting. Hmmm. https://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/23852585.southampton-manager-discuss-tactics-fans-exclusive-meeting/ Side note: someone mentioned this Libherr interview in the comments, you’ll have to translate https://www.blick.ch/sport/fussball/international/premierleague/multimillionaerin-katharina-liebherr-ueber-hochzeit-fussball-und-den-tod-ihres-vaters-es-war-ein-schock-als-mein-vater-den-fc-southampton-kaufte-id19036095.html

...and not forgetting of course that Richard O's character in that was from Southampton and could often be seen drinking out of a Saints mug. That's all.

Is there anyone that is disappointed with the way we played for most of the first half against Rotherham? I wouldn't think so, disappointed we couldn't score again and kill off the game, but the performance was better. What has pissed many off is that in the second half we reverted back to the slow impotent side that lost the 4 before our 3 match winning run (we did similar second half v Leeds and rode our luck at times at Stoke). Frustration boiled over for some after a real opportunity was missed at home against a side there for the taking.
-
These went on sale this morning and apparently the 2,000 were mostly sold by lunchtime, according to Nick Illingsworth on the UI. It was also suggested the club are trying to get more in the lower tier.
-
Plenty would disagree - I've been going for well over half a century and I can honestly say I've never booed one of our own players, my language may have been a bit industrial a few times, but I can certainly understand why some would. These faint-of-heart players and managers need to understand that we carry a lot of...ahem, scar tissue...from a number of seasons, it's gonna spill over now and again.

...and some of these thin-skinned players that have only been here 5 minutes. The reaction ain't only about yesterday's second half about-turn back into the slow, impotent bunch against one of the leagues most beatable teams, our frustration and anger is borne out of a number of seasons of mostly a shit (expensive) spectacle we put up with. We were ready for a reset, it ain't feeling that way. -

You shouldn't be so harsh on the fans, Russell Martin agrees with them. Martin was “angry and annoyed” and "frustrated" with the Rotherham draw https://www.southamptonfc.com/en/news/article/martin-angry-and-annoyed-with-rotherham-draw he feels like that after his first half a dozen or so home games so fans are entitled to vent their 'anger, annoyance and frustration' after fuck knows how many shit results at St Mary's season after season. -
I agree with MIltonaggro, it smacked of arrogance. I can't help thinking after dominating them first half, Martin may have thought the 3 points were in the bag and this was the perfect opportunity to showcase his (ponderous) gazzillion-pass football second half. It's astounding we never went for the jugular, a chance to claw back some 'goals against' and see off probably the worst side (particularly away) in the division. Rotherham clearly couldn't believe their luck. I'm not liking this football malarkey.

I'd suggest the Marlands car park, usually plenty of spaces even on matchdays but could be slow city centre traffic getting to it. Once parked a brisk 15min walk from there. Edit: as you approach the city centre I'm sure there are signs saying how many spaces available at various car parks or you can check online. -
I would think no chance tbh. Millwall only sell the top tier to away fans, around 2,000, they'll get snapped up pretty quickly.Having said that, the last time we went there back in the Championship, we sold out quick and they did relent and give us the centre section of the lower tier but Leeds only had the upper recently. If you do blag one, and although being local, you'll still be corralled outside for some time after before being allowed out!

…or ‘Rupert Lowe’, there’s even a song about it! Anyway, back to changing colours “A landmark is to be painted blue and gold following an outcry over the use of red in the previous plan. The city council announced a £3.5m deal with airline Emirates to rebrand the Spinnaker Tower earlier this month. The decision upset 10,000 people who signed a petition against a branding plan as red and white are the colours of football rivals Southampton. Liberal Democrat opposition said the saga had made the city the "laughing stock of the country"
