Had the misfortune of refereeing a few games when I was a youth coach over ten years ago. Throw in the element of you also being the coach of one of the sides and it's a red rag to a field of bulls should you give any decision against the team you are playing against. Would be lying if I said I hadn't given anything out against referees since.... but I do respect how difficult their jobs are at any level. Physical threats were certainly a possibility every time it became clear there were no referees available. Don't blame people who love the game but don't play not wanting to spend their sunday mornings/afternoons on the end of that kind of behaviour.
