  3. Actually totally agree with that. Mates go to different festivals from InDorset to Bestival to Reading. IF I lived in the UK still then there is no doubt I would want to do the same. But for us from this plastic soul-less monstrosity that is Dubai, it is the "atmosphere" that we want. The Medieval conditions, the chance to sit and sip tea with Greenpeace activists, to spend a couple of hours ambling round the craft stalls, watching the Village Disco in a field, have a stinky crap, not wash for 4 days - for us it is like an enema for the soul that washes out all the B**s of this Monument to Modern Excess that is Dubai & (most) of the people here. Add to that the fact it costs us 600 quid each for the flight before we worry about the tickets and the cost of being there, so for us, we need more from the weekend. When it comes to listening to music, we don't need to travel as we do get great gigs here (Megadeath Daughtry & Razorlight at a two day event next week with no mud and flushing loos) Maybe they should keep Glasto for us foreigners - it'd still sell out in under two hours and we could all pay the carbon taxes to save the planet. Let the Brits go to proper Music Fests, you don't need atmosphere & culture you have that all around you every day of the week.

  15. Oh and Fringe? SPOILER ALERT for those who have not seen it go away from this post now Notable for how our beloved Mr Spock turns into an utter Socio/Psycho-pathic evil nutjob. Mr Spock an Evil Genius par Excellence. Never expected that
  16. Games of Thrones has to be the best as it is such a game changer in terms of how it is constructed (around a story, not a location or characters) - obviously The Wire matches that genre and quality wise. Other great favourites not mentioned Fringe - starts like a poor - man's rip off of X-Files and gets better by the week and the development and depth of the (multiple) Walter Bishop characters is simply superb House - OK it went on for a couple of years too long but again, what a great and complex character Hugh Lawrie created, and at the end, what a great way to finish the series off Homeland - only now getting that over here and catching up with you guys, we're at episode 6 and starting to see so many potential angles and oddities building up Also, because it is oddball and offbeat, a mention in dispatches to Once Upon a Time. It should be a kiddies show, but the way it just keeps putting new twists on old tales makes it good entertainment. (Battlestar the remake for me was the moment when I think US Shows seemed to really step up, the effects and the quality of the acting and storyline just became a ground breaker, I know being down here we missed a lot & it's simplistic but it was kind of like pre Battlestar my memories of US TV = Baywatch & similar fluff. Post Battlestar - Gritty, realistic and absorbing.)
  17. Posted on this some months ago. It's the close up shots of the Spitfires Hurricances and ME109's that are the real stars of the film In terms of a remake, the film condenses so many "bad moments" or "big moments that became turning points" that occassionally it was hard to follow. But the technology must exist these days to make a ripping expanded "mini-series" around the core of the film and the behind the scenes stories

  19. I've only now just read this thread from the beginning. Interesting to watch the story evolve, arguments and opinions change. Many have said Saville cannot defend himself, and a higher power is doing that now. But to me this story now is no longer about him, this is about so many more people. It's almost like Watergate. The original crime (of burglary in that case) paled into insignificance when the entire Cover-Up came to light. Reading today that BBC Executives conducted an "enquiry" into allegations back in the 70's starts to build a trail of complicitness that looks like it will continue to expand and will cause damage to many institutions and probably legends as well. So much collateral damage will hurt so many sacred institutions. The allegations of harm that Saville seems to have caused to individuals are appalling and have ruined lives. The mess around this, the revelations about the culture, and the harm to instituions and other historical figures could harm a great deal more as well as damage the "Moralising Position" that the UK takes on many Global Issues. Those who turned a blind eye will now possibly have their lives ruined and if true they should be brought to task with the full force of the law. This looks like it will get a lot worse and now the entire World is looking in and frowning at Britain (again)
  20. This is an outrage. Something must be done. Hell, in fact I'll now force FMDP to read the programmes I've brought back on my last 7 trips to SMS that sit just below 50 shades of grey in her meh must read pile. Hell, I'll go as far to ask her to tell me if there is something worth reading in any of them. On the other side, I recognised one of the sellers at The Chapel end on my way to the Walsall game couple of years back. Back in the early 80's she worked her backside off to sell the old lotto/bingo tickets in Salisbury. She must have given some 30 years of service to the club. To get a letter and no notice? Sorry new tech and new outlets be damned. What was done to those people was out of order
  21. Dear Trousers Sorry. I was so excited this morning, a mate called me and offered me a Round the World Cruise free as long as I took the beer. Turned out it only took 6 hours, luckily I fell asleep just before the North West Passage to the UK and woke up in Munich. No, I don't understand that either, but Oktoberfest was fun. After I work that out I will try and re evaluate my rant this morning into more Golf related terms. All I can say at the moment is that POL seem to have a double bogey going on. God Bless Weissbier
  22. PES. A point of record for you. We did question NC directly on the funding model of Saints. It was posted on here a number of times and debated on at least two threads. NC gave an interview to Solent and questions were sent in. Specifically how were the Liebherrs funding the club? Was it by loans, leverage etc. His answer while "vague" at the time was that the money was in the form of "grants" and caused me again to question just what he meant. I checked this with a mate in Switzerland (a tax specialist) who said that this made sense as it would be a vehicle that allowed ML to use tax benefits (on a 2.5billion fortune, it would attract tax on earnings. A grant would give tax relief benefits so for example a 15mil grant would from tax relief only cost the equivalent of around 10mil in cash (not accurate maths but given as an example) (nice to know we got LEGALLY subsidised by a taxpayer as well BTW) Then after his death, that grant was converted into equity which not only met FFP rules but also meant that should the family wish to get their money out they could because they could now sell their shares and had a clear valuation. It also meant that the grants were converted in proper debt equity. Only Rupert in the world of football has ever been so stupid as to think about buying back a clubs own shares. And nobody complains about the amount of debt equity Apple, IBM or the banks in UK hold. Fast forward to this transfer window. Only a complete moron (including many on that thread in the main forum) missed the club "inferring" that they would need to take out a loan. There were about 40 pages+ on the Ramirez thread. The original deal fell through BECAUSE of the insistence of Bologna to receive ALL the cash up front. The club clearly had a budget (5mil now the rest later) BUT the deal changed on them and we ended up paying 12.5mil cash. The ONLY question that we as fansshould be asking is about the commercial aspects of that deal. What interest rate would the family lend the money to the club at (ie they don't love the club like Marcus so would probably no longer be interested in Granting money, just lending it. IF the commercial rate was higher than NC could get in the markets (thanks to QE there are HUGE sums of capital looking for secure homes) The OTHER question (which could make the few look silly) is Did the family guarantee the loan (because it was a better deal) All Saints fans would have been up in arms knowing we have a 60mil income this year and could not invest 12.5mil of that in a player of Ramirez's calibre
  23. @crstig Hearing a rumour that the #saintsfc loan was to buy some land in the Fratton area of Portsmouth…. #pompey nice one Mr lurker
  24. Switzerland. The land of financial instruments and secrecy and Banking. But also one of taxes. Of course there is absolutely no likelihood that the Liebherr Estate is 1) Still in probate. 2) Is able to earn a return on long term investments of say 6% a year or 3 NC is not able to borrow from a Tax Free location leveraged against the assets of the family/will/trust because he can get the loan at say 2% There is clearly not one single possible business reason, taxation reason whatsoever why something could be done this way. So I've happily spent the day running round in circles demanding that something must be done. It is great fun.
