I read today 'scum' is a navy term for people who always rise to the top regardless of ability. That seems a much more likely origin than mythical striking dockers. I quite like it too - it suggests seething jealousy and resentment of our success instead of plain vanilla hatred.

I think its lots of reasons but mainly 1. People have got less tribal. They travel and move around more and are less sure their home city is the mightiest in the world. 2. Its less of a special occasion so less exciting. At one time going to see Saints was the best and only football you'd see all week. Now you can watch games from around the world 24/7.

It can be hard enough to find someone you want to be with when 97% of the people around you are the same sexuality. With a 3% hit rate its much more difficult. People often want to be with others like them. Its the same reason you get Polish or Indian or Jewish areas. Brighton isnt generically gay friendly. If you go to Whitehawk (think Millbrook on steroids) then I imagine the gay population is close to zero. Down the road in Kemptown with its gay bars, hotels, cafes and saunas its probably nearer 50%.

Flat wrong. The media are interested because it will sell copies / power clickbait. If there was no interest there is no story.
