  2. It'll be a famous ex player now managing in the lower leagues imo
  3. Life must be very unpleasant if your first assumption is always that someone is sponging off you. About 3 million of those are aged 16-22 and in further or higher education and about another 1 million are long term sick or disabled with another c1m early retired. That leaves about 4m million - mostly parents raising kids and being supported by their partners - the bastards.
  4. The UK is less densely populated than the Netherlands - whose capital is the Hague and has vibrant cities in not just Amsterdam but Rotterdam, Utrecht, Eindhoven, Leiden etc.
  5. I assume you are 26-35. Old enough to look down on younger people but not yet mature enough to have the confidence to do what you want and not be constricted by what other people might think.
  6. Reminds me of an old flatmate from the Mumbles near Swansea. He was talking about his favourite pub whose only downside was that "freaking bloody Bonny Tyler turns up every time a band is on and insists on singing Total Eclipse of the Heart".
  7. But as a proportion of GDP it is falling. It not necessarily a criticism of the UK, its a trends of affluence
  8. As an aside its really dull for the rest of us to have to read. Meet up and resolve it or of STFU would be the preferred options
  9. Britain is much more focussed on its capital than most other countries. Frankfurt, Munich and Hamburg are all genuine rivals to Berlin and have their own power bases (finance, engineering and shipping). In the US New York, Los Angeles and Chicago easily outweigh Washington DC. We should move the political capital to Chipping Norton and free up the rest of the country to return to a healthier balance.
  10. Sometimes you need someone to prompt you to do something nice. At Winter wonderland in Hyde Park a couple of weeks ago I bought too many of the non refundable vouchers needed to go on any of the rides. By 7pm we'd had enough and were heading home and i made a small grumble about £17 of wasted vouchers. It was my 8 year old daughter who insisted we should give them away and she chose a young lad out with his girlfriend, maybe only 16 years old who was getting £10 worth at the booth. He and she were so so chuffed when offered the freebies it actually made it one of the highlights of the night.
  11. Its actually very objective. To find something "cynical and strangely bitter" simply because it isn't a relentless puff piece is odd.
  12. Isn't it a public speaking device to let people know you're about to speak and to get their attention? - a bit like chinking a glass or knocking the table at a noisy wedding or reception. The actually word used is irrelevant, could be anything - 'okay', 'well', 'so', 'ahem' etc

    MPs' pay

Totally agree. the House of Lords is one of those things which shouldn't work, but does. If the political honours were removed so it was just a revising chamber made up of people who have done something worthwhile with their lives it would be even better.
  14. Ron Burgundy must be worried
  15. I know! I was ****ing amazed too.
  16. you've dropped your aitch again Bearsy.
  17. Any Chief Exec with the same resources was the quote. Given we are mid table, half the league's CEOs are doing just that.
  18. Not a criticism but I do find it slightly scary that any group of people is coddled and insulated quite so much "When Southampton travel away from home, the hotel is often booked for two nights rather than one. On the first night, club staff arrive and clean the already pristine rooms. They hoover up every particle of dust that might cause illness or carry a bug. Then bespoke mattresses are placed on each bed, tailored to each player. The duvets, the pillow cases and the sheets are washed and ironed by the club, using the same washing powder and the same methods. So wherever the players are, their bed smells and feels the same. The club chef travels to each hotel ahead of the players, to oversee the cooking and preparation of food. The players know and trust the food that is presented to them. It looks the same, tastes the same, smells the same, wherever they are staying. Techniques are borrowed from sports across the world. Staff are constantly learning."
  19. Actually sorry The9, scrub that - apparently I can't read properly. Having looked at the table again it is Northampton who are just above Pompey, not Newport.
  20. Exactly that. I'm not sure what the solution is, apart from paying good teachers more to work in **** schools. Two teachers Ive know for 20 odd years since qualification started off being very socially committed and wanting to work in sink estate schools - but theres only so many years of crowd control you can take. Both now work in affluent village schools, feeling very slightly guilty, but a lot happier.
  21. The best part about that is that Pompey even managed conceded two goals in the last 30mins to Newport - who are just one place above them in the 'crappest team in last 30 mins' table.
